New Understanding of Hair Structure

A deep understanding of hair structure led to a new approach to product design. In 2004, Pantene took a step back and changed the way they looked at hair care. Applying cutting edge research tools from NASA, the medical industry, and other fields outside of hair care, Pantene Pro-V Scientists gained a new understanding of the physical and chemical properties of hair structure, including their unique patterns of multi-fiber arrangements.

Previously, hair was analyzed as single fibers or at the bulk hair level, overlooking the intermediary step, studying hair at the multi-fiber, 3-dimensional level, a critical factor in product performance that influences how ingredients work on hair. With this new understanding of hair at three critical levels – single fiber, bulk, and multi-fiber arrangements, Pantene researchers identified four distinct hair structures – Fine, Medium/Thick, Curly and Color-Treated – and changed its entire approach to product design.

Putting Pantene to the Test

Pantene created 600 prototypes, and tested among 20,000 women worldwide to understand the key ingredients needed to deliver desirable end-benefits for each structure. In addition, more than 500 technical tests were completed in Pantene labs.

Experts and Women Support Pantene’s New Approach to Product Design

In addition, leading hair experts who participated in P&G Beauty’s Premier Science Panel agreed that specific products designed for the four major hair types have been shown to deliver measureable and noticeable benefits. New Pantene Solutions will give women the ability to choose products that fit both their hair type and their desired end look. Women will have options that allow them to keep their volume (past 4:00!) and have smoothness that lasts all day. Women who used new Pantene had a statistically significant improvement in their mood as measured by a Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS), compared to women who used old Pantene products.
