Beauty with a good cause. Aveda’s 2011 Light the Way soy wax candle, featuring a stress-relieving aroma with certified organic French lavender, is sold exclusively during Earth Month. One hundred percent of the purchase price ($12) of this candle supports Global Greengrants Funds water-related projects. That’s a total of $1.34 million if all candles are sold!!

Aveda’s 2011 Light the Way soy wax candle 100% of purchase price helps protect clean water

In light of the recent events, part of the proceeds from candle purchases will be used to support long term recovery and recovery in Japan through local Greengrants grantees.

Now in its 12th year, Aveda created Earth Month in April 1999 to raise awareness and funds for critically important environmental issues around the world, and has since raised more than $18 million for organizations that directly affect environmental change, and $12 million for water-related causes alone over the past four years.

In developing nations, more than 4,000 children die each day from preventable conditions like diarrhea, due to unsafe drinking water. A person in a country such as the US will, on average, use more than 40 gallons of water to take just one, leisurely bath. Yet someone living in a developing nation may have access to less than eight gallons of water each day for all of their daily needs. In developing countries 70 percent of industrial waste and 80 percent of all waste is dumped untreated into waters where they pollute the usable water supply.

The stark differences between access and rights to safe drinking water globally are startling enough to inspire much needed change – a movement that can empower communities, protect local watersheds and help make clean water accessible to everyone, everywhere. Aveda Earth Month 2011 will help to achieve this change.

February 11, 1:00pm EST, New York, NY—Aveda lead stylist Odile Gilbert created a sleek and elegant gilded twist using Aveda Smooth Infusion Glossing Straightener, Aveda Brilliant Spray-On Shine, and Aveda Control Force Firm Hold Hair Spray at the Jason Wu Fall/Winter 2011 show.

Front Row at Jason Wu Fall 2011 fashion show with VOGUE’s Anna Wintour in the center

“The Jason Wu hair for this season is elegantly chic—like a piece of art. The ends of the hair are coated in 24-karat gold leaf and shaped like a feather, echoing the gold accents and feathers from the collection.” — Odile Gilbert for Aveda

HAIR STEP BY STEP BY ODILE GILBERT FOR AVEDA:

1. Apply Aveda Smooth Infusion Glossing Straightener to damp hair, from roots to ends, to smooth hair and add shine. Create a center part using a fine-tooth comb and blow hair dry straight. Use a flat-iron for super sleek length.

2. Create a ponytail at the nape of the neck and secure with an elastic. Spray Aveda Control Force Firm Hold Hair Spray generously to keep hair in place.

3. Coat the hair from roots to ends with Aveda Brilliant Retexturing Gel for a lustrous, polished look.

4. Divide the ponytail in half and wind the two sections together to create a twist. Secure the twist with an elastic two to three inches above the ends and mist with Aveda Control Force Firm Hold Hair Spray for hold.

5. Pull the ends of the hair up to the back of the head so the twist loops at the neck. Use bobby pins to secure the bottom of the twist to the base—so the ends of the hair fan upwards. Add a layer of Aveda Control Force Firm Hold Hair Spray.

6. Use a fine-tooth comb to coax the ends of the hair into a feather shape and set against the head using Aveda Control Force Firm Hold Hair Spray. Very gently apply gold leaf to only to the shaped ends with fingers and spray liberally with Aveda Control Force Firm Hold Hair Spray.

7. Complete the look with a generous layer of Aveda Brilliant Spray-On Shine for a high gloss finish.

Q: What was your inspiration for this look? How did you collaborate with the designer to create the look?

“Jason’s Baroque-meets-American-sportswear collection this season includes muted black, whites, and nudes highlighted by shots of antique gold, so we wanted to create something simple and elegant—with a touch of luxury.” — Odile Gilbert for Aveda

Q: How could a woman achieve this look on her own?

“To adapt this style for real life, create a sleek pony with Aveda Brilliant Spray-On Shine and twist into a bun at the nape of the neck, with ends fanning up the back of the head. Clip with a bright metallic barrette or hair pin to add a shot of glamour. Spray with Aveda Control Force Firm Hold Hair Spray for a controlled and elegant finish.”

— Odile Gilbert for Aveda

Q: What is the inspiration for your collection? What is the look you are capturing?

“My collection was inspired by Robert Polidori’s gorgeous photographs of the restoration of Versailles. I loved the juxtaposition between Versailles’ rough undersurface revealed during renovation and its opulent Baroque décor, so my clothing this season is a mix of luxuriously embellished fabrics and signature American sportswear. There are over fifteen types of laces, including a delicately falling leaf motif lace that I embroidered onto day and evening pieces and a gilded lace gown with black and white ‘gear’ palettes.” — Jason Wu

HAIR STEP BY STEP BY ANTOINETTE BEENDERS FOR AVEDA:

1. Apply Aveda Damage Remedy Daily Hair Repair to damp hair to repair and protect from heat styling. Blow dry straight with a Mason Pearson brush.

2. Use a fine-tooth comb to create a center part, dividing the hair into two sides. Loosely braid each side and secure at the ends with elastics. Spray with Aveda Air Control Hair Spray for light hold.

3. Starting at the top of each braid, apply a few seconds of gentle pressure with a flat iron. Section by section, move slowly down so that the entirety of each braid has been pressed.

4. Gently pinch the sides of each braid between the thumb and forefinger and tug gently to loosen.

5. Remove the elastics and use fingers to loosen the curl. To create a soft wave, brush lightly with a Mason Pearson brush and set the look with Aveda Control Force Firm Hold Hair Spray.

Q: What was your inspiration for this look? How did you collaborate with the designer to create the look?

“Christian’s collection was inspired by the graceful beauty of orchid flower petals. We wanted a hair style that captures that natural elegance.” — Antoinette Beenders for Aveda

Q: How could a woman achieve this look on her own?

“This look is very easy to recreate and works for anyone with a little length to their hair. To protect hair from heat damage, use a small amount of Aveda Damage Remedy Daily Hair Repair on damp hair and blow dry straight. Then make two braids, one on each side of the head, and spray with Aveda Air Control Hair Spray for light hold. Use a flat iron to gently set each braid, pressing small sections from top to bottom. Finally, undo the braids, loosen waves with your fingers, and set the look with Aveda Control Force Firm Hold Hair Spray.” — Antoinette Beenders for Aveda

Q: What is the inspiration for your collection? What is the look you are capturing?

“My collection this season is inspired by intricately beautiful details found in plant life, like the petals of a Dracula orchid. That concept led to stunningly detailed patterns and glamorous eveningwear.” — Christian Siriano

“The Rodarte hair look for this season is young and innocent. The body is full of natural-looking texture, the ends are straight, and a strong, swooping side part gives the hair a retro feel. The look is inspired by teenagers in the 1970’s, so the effect is very organic, adorned with handcrafted tree branch and leaf barrettes that make a statement.”–Odile Gilbert for Aveda

Q: What was your inspiration for this look? How did you collaborate with the designer to create the look?

“Kate, Laura, and I wanted to create a hair look with an innocent, 1970’s-teenager feel. The naturally textured, organic feeling of the hair reflects the Rodarte collection this season, which is inspired by the natural beauty of Northern California. A beautiful barrette, inspired by giant Redwood trees, pulls the look together. The hair is tousled and full of body on top and through the middle but blunter and straighter on the ends—a very 1970’s aesthetic.” –Odile Gilbert for Aveda

Q: How could a woman achieve this look on her own?

“This look is cute and playful, and very easy to recreate. Prep damp hair with Aveda Brilliant™ Damage Control, and blow dry straight. Use fingers to create an ultra-strong part on the left side of the head and spray with Aveda Volumizing Tonic™. Tousle hair with fingers and emulsify Aveda Damage Remedy™ Daily Hair Repair in hands for extra texture and body. Attach a thick barrette to the left side, just above the ear, and finish the look with Aveda Air Control™ Hair Spray.” —Odile Gilbert for Aveda

Q: What is the inspiration for your collection? What is the look you are capturing?

“The Rodarte Spring/Summer 2011 collection is inspired by Northern California, giant Redwood trees, and 1970’s suburban sprawl. For the hair, we wanted to create an innocent look reminiscent of teenagers in the 1970’s. For ornamentation, we made hand carved wood, branch, and leaf barrettes.” —Kate and Laura Mulleavy of Rodarte

Q: You’ve worked hard to reduce the environmental impact of your show each season with Aveda’s Green Backstage program by replacing bottled water with NYC tap water, eliminating the use of fur, serving organic/locally sourced food, and printing invitations on recycled paper. What does your accomplishment mean to you? How do you feel about the end results?

“Our collection this season is all about celebrating the landscape of Northern California, where we grew up. We love how the natural landscape there is protected and we were raised to appreciate the Redwood forests, the coastline along Big Sur, and Monterey bay. We believe in doing all we can to preserve the natural world. We always work in a manner that promotes ethical and environmentally sound production, and we believe that these practices should always be reflected in our show production. We are honored to say that Aveda is our partner in working towards a greener show.”—Kate and Laura Mulleavy of Rodarte

“The SUNO hair look for this season is elegant and sophisticated. The unstructured back is a touch of naivety against the glamorous style in front. The sides are slicked back and the top is voluminous — both are almost wet with shine — creating gorgeous variety of textures. I was inspired by the idea of a young girl who slept in her elegant updo and kept it in the next morning.”—Odile Gilbert for Aveda

HOW TO GET THE HAIRSTYLE:

1. Prep hair with Aveda Air Control™ Hair Spray for light, workable hold and divide hair into four sections: top (from the crown forward), sides, and back.

2. Use a medium-barrel curling iron to curl the front section, working with approximately two inches of hair at a time. Prep each section with Aveda Control Force™ Firm Hold Hair Spray for ultra-strong hold and pin each curl atop the head with a large hair clip.

3. Repeat with side and back sections. Allow hair to cool.

4. Remove clips from the back section of hair. Take one of the curls and twist into a small bun at the nape of the neck, securing with hair pins.

5. Take the remaining free curls and twist in “S”-shaped patterns against the head, using pins to secure each end into the bun. Sections will overlap and begin to create a beautiful blend of waves. Add additional pins where necessary to secure the style. Spray with Aveda Control Force™ Firm Hold Hair Spray

6. Unclip side sections of hair and pull them back tightly. Apply Aveda Brilliant™ Retexturing Gel to create a clean, slicked-back look and pin just above the ears. Take remaining loose hair and entwine into the updo, as in step 5, and secure with pins.

7. Remove clips from the front section of hair and brush with a Mason Pearson brush. Spray liberally with Aveda Air Control™ Hair Spray for workability. To create volume at the top, pull hair very loosely to the crown and pin at the crown. Twist the remaining hair into the updo, pinning to secure.

8. Apply Aveda Brilliant™ Spray-On Shine to the top and side sections for a super-wet look.

9. Tame loose pieces by adding extra pins as needed and set the look with Aveda Control Force™ Firm Hold Hair Spray. Use fingers to tousle the updo for a bit of texture and messiness.

10. Allow hair to dry before attaching three or four simple black barrettes to one side of the head. The hair will look polished and styled in front but rougher and lived-in in the back.

Q: What was your inspiration for this look? How did you collaborate with the designer to create the look?

“The designers and I wanted to create a look that would complement the SUNO collection this season, which is ladylike and sophisticated but also breezy and full of elegant imperfections. Like the clothes themselves, the hair look is constructed through layering different pieces together—creating a spontaneous yet beautiful end result. The updo in back is at once detailed and disheveled, and we added simple black barrettes to pull the style together with a touch of chicness.” —Odile Gilbert for Aveda

Q: How could a woman achieve this look on her own?

“This look is easy to recreate and especially beautiful for evening. Prep dry hair with Aveda Air Control™ Hair Spray and curl with a medium-barrel curling iron. Pin each curl atop the head. Allow curls to cool and spray liberally with Aveda Control Force™ Firm Hold Hair Spray. Remove clips from the back section and create a bun, securing at the nape of the neck. Working from the bottom up and removing hair clips as needed, wrap sections of curled hair around the bun in an “S”-shaped pattern and secure with hair pins. Slick sides of hair back with Aveda Brilliant™ Retexturing Gel and pin hair in front into a voluminous “pouf.” Spray front and sides with Aveda Brilliant™ Spray-On Shine and finish the entire look with Aveda Control Force™ Firm Hold Hair Spray. Add simple black barrettes to one side and you’re finished!” —Odile Gilbert for Aveda

Q: What is the inspiration for your collection? What is the look you are capturing?

“Our collection this season was inspired by Georges Lepape’s colorful illustrations for the Ballet Russes, and the textural details of vintage French Biological Fish prints. We sought to make the collection feel ethereal and floating, gentle and breezy as if suspended in water or air. The silhouettes reflect a return to ladylike sophistication and shape: contained, but billowing, fraying at the edges, embracing perfect imperfections. As always, the SUNO Spring/Summer 2011 collection remains worldly, with Hmong embroideries, vintage French ikats, Indian shadow embroideries, and animal beading—all slightly twisted with a modern bend. Printed deco circles, watery plaids, transparent zebra prints, yarn dyed stripes and laser cut leather mix together with watery colors, all bleeding and blending, layering atop one another creating an unexpected harmony.” —Max Osterweis and Erin Beatty of SUNO

Q: You have made a real effort to “green” your show this season. How do you feel about this accomplishment?

“SUNO is committed to ethical fashion. Aveda taught us that producing a ‘Green’ show is easy. It is imperative that we as a company, and as individuals, start thinking globally, whether it be training tailors in Kenya or protecting the environment. Thinking this way shouldn’t be considered an accomplishment, rather a necessary way of life.” —Max Osterweis and Erin Beatty of SUNO

L to R: Odile Gilbert and Jason Wu

Aveda lead stylist Odile Gilbert created looping braids and twists finished with a chiffon ‘flower’ using Aveda Smooth Infusion Style-Prep Smoother, Aveda Air Control Hair Spray, and Aveda Control Force Firm Hold Hair Spray at the Jason Wu Spring/Summer 2011 Fashion Week show in New York.

“The Jason Wu hair look for this season is simple yet sophisticated, with 1970’s inspiration. We’re braiding chiffon—scraps from the collection—into the hair and twisting the ends into a flower. This look captures the happiness and excitement of spring and summer.” –Odile Gilbert for Aveda–Odile Gilbert for Aveda

HOW TO GET THE LOOK:

1. Prep damp hair with Aveda Smooth Infusion Style-Prep Smoother for smoothness and to tame flyaways. Use a fine-tooth comb to create a strong, clean part on the right side of the head and then blow dry straight using a Mason Pearson brush.

2. Pull hair tightly back and separate into four sections along the nape of the neck. Spray each with Aveda Air Control Hair Spray for shine and flexible hold.

3. Tie a long ribbon or piece of fabric—in a shade close to the hair color—around the top of each section of hair.

4. One section at a time, braid the fabric through the hair and secure at the bottom with an elastic. Leave excess fabric out at the bottom of each braid. Spray each braid liberally with Aveda Control Force Firm Hold Hair Spray for ultra-strong hold.

5. Collect all four braids and tie the fabric into one large bow at the end to create a ‘flower.’

6. Pull the fabric ‘flower’ upwards and secure at the nape of the neck with hair pins, creating beautiful braided loops stemming from the flower. Finish the look with Aveda Control Force™ Firm Hold Hair Spray.

Q: What was your inspiration for this look? How did you collaborate with the designer to create the look?

“Jason’s collection was inspired in part by the 1970’s, so we wanted the hair for this season to reflect the hair of that era. Though the look is ultra-sophisticated, it’s also young and playful, with clean, slick hair in front and a mélange of braids and twists gathered into a gorgeous flower in back. The addition of Jason’s material completes the look, like chiffon highlights.” — Odile Gilbert for Aveda

Q: How could a woman achieve this look on her own?

“This look is very simple to recreate and works on anyone. Prep hair with Aveda Smooth Infusion™ Style-Prep Smoother™ and blow dry straight. Separate four sections of hair in the back and twist a piece of fabric into each. Leave a little fabric out at the ends and tie them together into a bow. Twist the braids up and pin to the back of the head. Set the style with Aveda Control Force™ Firm Hold Hair Spray.”—Odile Gilbert for Aveda

Jenn Chiminiello, Master Stylist at Aveda Vandam Street Lifestyle Salon in New York City, created an updated braid using Aveda Control Force Hair Spray at the Jason Wu Resort 2011 show in New York. The Hairstyle & Inspiration: “The Jason Wu hair look for Resort 2011 is a slightly tousled, modernized braid that is both innocent and sexy. The freshness of the braid complements the romantic florals and pretty plaids in Jason’s collection.” —Jenn Chiminiello for Aveda

Hair by Aveda Master Stylist Jennifer Chiminiello

How to get the hairstyle: Hair Tutorial

1. Prep damp hair with Aveda Brilliant Damage Control to add shine and protect hair from the hazards of heat styling. Then massage Aveda Phomollient Styling Foam from roots to ends to add body. Blow-dry with a round brush, curling the ends of hair under as you dry.

2. Use a comb to create a messy part wherever hair parts naturally. For extra volume at the crown, backcomb the roots with a fine-toothed comb.

3. Divide hair into two side sections and one back section. Create a tight braid with the back section of hair and secure at the end with a clear elastic band.

4. Take the left section of hair and lace through the braid, securing at the bottom with a clear elastic band, on top of the elastic already holding the braid. Repeat with right section of hair. Front of the face and secure with bobby pins at each side of the braid, behind the ears. Secure other loose strands into the braid as needed.

5. Finish by spraying the braid liberally with Aveda Control Force Firm Hold Hair Spray to keep hair steadily in place.

AVEDA PRODUCTS USED

Q&A with Jenn Chiminiello for Aveda about the hairstyle at Jason Wu 2011 Resort Collection:

Q: What was your inspiration for this look? How did you collaborate with the designer to create the look?

“Jason’s collection was inspired by the look of the dewy pixie girls who graced the covers of 1960’s fashion magazines. The updated braid we created for the show reflects that fresh and youthful feel.” —Jenn Chiminiello for Aveda.

Q: How could a woman achieve this look on her own?

“This style looks pretty and fresh for daytime and super romantic for evening. To keep the look from going flat, apply Aveda Phomollient Styling Foam to damp hair, massaging from roots to ends, and blow dry with a round brush. Then divide hair into two side sections and one back section. Create a tight braid with the back section of hair, securing with an elastic. Wrap pieces of hair from each side through the braid, securing with an elastic at the bottom of the braid. To keep the style in place, spray liberally with Aveda Control Force Firm Hold Hair Spray.”

Aveda lead stylist Odile Gilbert created glossy, childlike hair adorned with handmade flower pins at the Rodarte Fall/Winter 2010 Fashion Week show in New York.

“The Rodarte hair look for this season is sleek and shiny—at once free-flowing yet controlled. I was inspired by the idea of a modern, young girl who is strong and capable yet sweet and innocent. The look is young and dreamlike, with handmade metal flowers that make a statement.”–Odile Gilbert for Aveda

Q: What is the inspiration for your collection? What is the look you are capturing?
“Our collection this season explores the idea of sleepwalking. The idea of a dream state, or an in-between state, inspired us.” —Kate Mulleavy of Rodarte

Q: You have made a real effort to “green” your show this season. How do you feel about this accomplishment?
“Laura and I are committed to protecting the environment. Our greatest inspiration comes from the natural landscape that we grew up in, so we are proud to be partnering with a company like Aveda that promotes environmental awareness and responsibility.” —Kate Mulleavy of Rodarte

Q: What was your inspiration for this look? How did you collaborate with the designer to create the look?
“Kate, Laura, and I wanted to create a hair look with a dreamy, almost childlike feeling. From the front, the hair looks like it is left down, but in back, it is controlled, adorned with metal flowers that look like barrettes. There’s also a Mexican influence on the look, since the Rodarte collection this season is inspired by bordertowns. We wanted to reflect this inspiration with the vintage flower ornaments and shiny, side-parted hair.” –Odile Gilbert for Aveda

Q: How could a woman achieve this look on her own?
“This look is pretty and playful, especially for daytime. Prep damp hair with Aveda Smooth Infusion™ Glossing Straightener for sleekness and shine, blow dry smooth, and straighten with a flat iron. Pull hair tightly back and secure with bobby pins in a clean line—from one side of the occipital ridge to the other. Spray liberally with Aveda Control Force™ Hair Spray for all-day strong hold. Bring loose hair over both shoulders and finish the look by adding vintage hair ornaments.” — Odile Gilbert for Aveda
HOW TO GET THE LOOK: Products are all by Aveda.

1. Prep damp hair with Aveda Smooth Infusion Glossing Straightener for shine and sleekness, and blow-dry smooth with a flat brush.

2. Create a clean left side part. Straighten hair layer by layer using a flat iron.

3. Create anchors for the flower pins by forming three small braids along the scalp: one along the left side of the occipital ridge, one across the center of the head, and one vertically along the left side part. Spray with Aveda Control Force Hair Spray for maximum hold.

4. Brush hair over the braids, keeping the left side part clean and strong. Spray each layer of hair with Aveda Control Force Hair Spray and blow-dry for intense hold and shine. Hair should be sleek and close to the head.

5. Use small bobby pins to secure hair in a clean line from one side of the occipital ridge to the other, just above the nape of the neck. Let the ends of hair fall loosely in back and over both shoulders.

6. Secure a selection of metal flower ornaments into the hair horizontally across the head, using the covered braids as anchors. Finish the look with Aveda Control Force Hair Spray.
