Last week I had an amazing chance to chat with celebrity hairstylist Harry Josh who has been Gisele’s colorist for quite some years now. Harry Josh is also John Frieda’s International Creative Consultant.

I’ve interviewed Harry Josh for Talking Makeup’s celebrity beauty section: www.beautyinterviews.com

Harry Josh is a top celebrity hairdresser coming to us from Vancouver Canada. Harry Josh is also John Frieda’s International Creative Consultant and the hairdresser behind supermodel Gisele Bundchen’s hair. Aside from Gisele, Harry Josh styled hair for celebrities like Cameron Diaz, Gwyneth Paltrow, Natalie Portman, Fergie, and Reese Witherspoon.

I caught up with Harry Josh on the telephone interrupting his very busy morning to learn more about his fascinating career as top celebrity hairdresser.

In this interview Harry Josh talked to me about what attracted him to the world of hairdressing. His working relations with Gisele Bundchen. Gives tips to how we can achieve Gisele’s hair at home. Lists some John Frieda products he just can’t live without. Dishes out summer hair trends and future plans.

Marta Walsh: Why have you decided on a career in hairstyling?
Harry Josh: I always had a passion to be in front of the camera, I wanted to be an actor or a model and that didn’t work out so well. I then realized that if you can’t beat them, join them! I remember looking through fashion magazines when I was young , particularly Vogue, and seeing an outtake from a photo shoot of a hairdresser brushing model’s hair on a cliff. It didn’t even look like a job it looked like fun. As a hairdresser you get to work with beautiful models and to travel to exotic locations. It seemed like a cool job and I wanted to get it!

It didn’t even look like a job it looked like fun. As a hairdresser you get to work with beautiful models and to travel to exotic locations. It seemed like a cool job and I wanted to get it!

MW: What was your big first break as a celebrity hairdresser?
HJ: I would have to say Vogue Magazine. They have done a story on 5 up-and-comer hairdressers to look out for. I ended becoming their featured story. Vogue gave me a full page picture and a big chunk of the article. It turned out to be a really big thing for me. From that it all kind of snow balled.

MW: What is your working relations like with supermodel Gisele Bundchen?
HJ: I’ve been Gisele Bundchen’s colorist for 10 years. I’ve been one of her closest friends for about 13 years. And I style her hair on occasions such as red carpet events.

MW: Can you reveal how to get Gisele Bundchen’s hair color?
HJ: Gisele’s hair color can be achieved only if the bulk of your natural hair color or base color is showing. Only idea if you have light brown or dark blonde hair naturally. If your hair is very dark naturally, it will never work on you.

MW: How can we maintain color treated hair or highlighted hair such as Gisele’s?
HJ: I use John Frieda Frizz-Ease Thermal Protection Serum on EVERY single person’s hair I’ve ever styled in my life. Especially after coloring hair John Frieda Frizz-Ease Thermal Protection Serum helps in flattening the hair cuticles.

MW: How would you describe Gisele Bundchen’s hair cut? What should one ask their hairdresser at home to achieve Gisele’s cut?
HJ: You should ask your hairdresser to give your hair long layers.

MW: You’ve been recently featured on The Oprah Winfrey Show. How was that experience?
HJ: Appearing on the Oprah show was probably the highlight of my life! I’m a fan of the show and Oprah, and the fact that I got to sit next to Oprah for an hour and chat with her it is something I will never forget. I really hope to have another opportunity to go back on her show and do this again.

MW: Which some hot (pun intended, lol) summer hair trends we are going to see in the upcoming seasons?
HJ: We are seeing a lot of loose waves, natural tousled hair, nothing too styled because the summer heat makes hairstyles staying looking good for long difficult. We are also seeing a lot of hair accessories such as: headbands, hair clips, and hair combs.

MW: How would you describe your role at John Frieda?
HJ: I’m John Frieda’s International Creative Consultant for all the products that are launched in their line. We test all products and try to come up with what is missing on the market. We try to fill every niche we can when it comes to hair care. Our mission is to address or solve every hair issue with every hair type with our products. Whether you have frizzy hair, color treated hair. Whether you are blonde, brunette, or a red head, John Frieda has the product for you. John Frieda is a very innovative hair care line and a problem-solution based brand. We try to be specific about every product we create. Because I’m a hairdresser and not a scientist really helps the John Frieda products to be the best they can be. John Frieda products are not just coming from a lab, they are created through a hairdresser’s real life experimentation with these products and giving feedback on which product works or not. This way John Frieda was able to revolutionize how women style and care for their hair!

MW: Which other John Frieda product you just can’t live without?
HJ: I’m really a big fan of John Frieda’s mousse line and its Luxurious Volume Bountiful Body Mousse, and Frizz-Ease Take Charge Curl-Boosting Mousse. Both work fantastic and I can use them just about on any hair to build body and texture.

Harry Josh & Ali Larter at 2009 Costume Institute Gala.

MW: Which tips can you give us on maintaining healthy hair on an everyday basis?
HJ: Getting a trim every two months and using the right shampoo and conditioner can make a big difference to your hair. When you go to your local drugstore and stand in front the John Frieda section, read the labels and see which product describes your hair type. For example, if you have thin hair, try the John Frieda Root Awaking line, it is fantastic for that. John Frieda’s Root Awakening is our newest shampoo and conditioner. It smells amazing like eucalyptus. It really cleans and hydrates your scalp and promotes health hair growth. And as I said it smells so amazing, it is worth trying Root Awakening even just for that.

MW: What is your favorite city in the world?
HJ: New York City hands down!

MW: What is your favorite drink?
HJ: An Acai Smoothie, I drink that twice a day. It keeps me very healthy.

MW: How would you describe your personal style?
HJ: My style is understated, casual, and Rock Star chic.

MW: What some exciting projects are you working on at the moment and what’s next for Harry Josh?
HJ: I just styled Gisele Bundchen’s hair for the Vogue’s 2009 Costume Institute Gala. And I’m working with John Frieda on our product launches for 2010 and 2011.

It was a pleasure to interview Harry you can find out more about his work with John Frieda at the official site: www.johnfrieda.com and view more of his work portfolio by visiting his personal site http://www.harryjosh.com/

I’m so excited to share with you my interview with Nicolas Degennes, Givenchy’s Le Makeup Artistic Director for Beauty Interviews. Here it is:

Nicolas Degennes is Givenchy’s Le Makeup Artistic Director. Nicolas is the brilliant mind behind Givenchy Spring 2009 Maharani Makeup Collection and of Givenchy’s many other beautiful makeup. I met Nicolas at a Givenchy breakfast in New York City and was absolutely mesmerized with his speech. Nicolas made me fall in love with Givenchy, makeup, beauty, and being a woman. I had to share my life changing experience meeting Nicolas with you.

Nicolas Degennes.

In this interview Nicolas Degennes takes us back to Paris at age 16 where the love for art and beauty began for him, his philosophy about makeup, memorable celebrity collaborations such as with Monica Bellucci, Kristin Scott Thomas and Liv Taylor. Some of the must-have Givenchy products in every woman’s makeup bag, and where he finds his biggest inspirations in life.

Givenchy Spring 2009 Maharani Makeup Collection.

Marta Walsh: When did your fascination with beauty begin?
Nicolas Degennes: My passion with makeup and the arts began when I was a child. I left Paris at the tender age of 16 to follow my dream to study the arts, music, theater and photography. While exploring my fascination with arts in a fresh and inspiring environment, I befriended a great makeup artist in New York who introduced me to the world of makeup. Beauty and makeup became my newfound passion, and I have been working in this field ever since.

MW: What were some of your first big breaks in the beauty industry?
ND: One of my memorable breaks was working as a makeup artist for the American band, On Stage, in France. I began to travel widely, working as a makeup artist in many countries. I was hired by the French TV Channel Canal +, and was quickly promoted from head makeup artist to the channel’s Artistic Director. Meanwhile, I worked on everything from the Cesars (the French Oscars) and the Cannes Film Festival to music videos and films.

MW: What is your makeup philosophy?
ND: My philosophy is that makeup is freedom… Freedom to become whoever you want to be in that moment…to experiment…to create…to express…What have been some of your most memorable celebrity collaborations so far, and which celebrity would you like to do makeup for in the future?
In the past, I have worked well with Monica Bellucci, Vincent Cassel, Kristin Scott Thomas, Fanny Ardant, Charlotte Rampling, and of course, Liv Tyler. Working with Liv for the past few years has been wonderful because what started as a working relationship has now become a friendship. These women may be celebrities, but they are real women who create and inspire, as I believe all women do, so I don’t have any one person in mind that I want to work with, as all women continue to inspire me.

MW: What was the creative process like behind Givenchy’s Maharani Spring 2009 makeup collection?
ND: I was greatly drawn to the exoticism and beauty of India during my travels. I was attracted to the energy, spirit and vibrancy of colors as seen in Bollywood films, so I wanted to create a collection blazing with colors that paid homage to Indian beauty.

MW: Which Givenchy makeup products are must-haves in every woman’s makeup bag?
ND: Phenomen’Eyes Mascara is a must-have because it revolutionized the way women apply mascara and maximized the results they can now achieve, as the wand grabs each and every lash. Right now, I am also loving the Magic Kajal Eye Pencil, which is like a crayon and gives you an intense black line, inspired by Indian women using kohl. And skin is always very important, so the new PhotoPerfexion Fluid Foundation I created (launching April 09) gives women a very natural, flawless complexion, as if they have been touched up.

MW: Givenchy’s Phenomen Eyes Mascara is truly innovative new mascara. How does it work to give us the best lashes in the world?
ND: The incredible results of Phenomen’Eyes are a combination of the spherical brush and the formula. The round brush allows for you to grab every lash, including the tiniest corner lashes, and it also grabs from the very root, lining the lid. The formula is wetter than most, so you have maximum play time with your mascara to get your lashes perfect before the formula dries. Phenomen’Eyes offers a faultless way of applying mascara, curling and separating every lash to instantly outline and enhance the eyes.

MW: How would you describe your experience as Givenchy’s Le Makeup Artistic Director?
ND: It is a challenge, but at the same time exhilarating. I have been in this role for 10 years now and found that time moves quickly when you are living your passion.

MW: What makeup look do we expect to see at Givenchy in the upcoming season?
ND: My inspiration for my Summer 2009 collection is a sunny greeting from paradise! The monsoon season… Those summer days when rain and the warmth of the sun merge sensually together to caress the skin with shimmering, pure drops of light, bringing all of the senses to life. This season’s palettes create a glowing and luminous complexion with lots of shimmer and shine, capturing the glistening of the sun and glimmer from water.

NW: You talk a lot about the concept of freedom when it comes to women, makeup, and beauty. What are some simple steps a woman can take to find this freedom?
ND: Makeup is ever changing. Women should feel free to try new things; makeup is the freedom of expression. I can’t stress enough, please don’t be scared when applying makeup. Do what you feel because makeup is freedom.

MW: What are some of your biggest inspirations in life?
ND: I have always had the urge to be present with time. My inspiration derives from my personal experiences in life. I’ve developed a strong attachment to Asia and Morocco, so it is during my time spent in these places that my makeup and my passion for life is ignited and inspired. I am also greatly inspired by science-fiction. There are no limits to my imagination, and I am continually listening and watching the innovations in the world.

MW: What other passions do you have besides helping women look beautiful?
ND: Currently, I am working very hard on planning an exhibition this coming April in Paris, which will celebrate my work over the past 10 wonderful years at Givenchy, and a compilation of personal works of art as well. I am excited to be sharing my art and work with the world.

It was a pleasure to interview Nicolas Degennes you can find out all about the newest Givenchy collections at the official website: www.parfumsgivenchy.com and also check out Nicolas website!

Few days ago I had the great pleasure to interview actress Bree Turner for Beauty Interviews. Bree has a role in an upcoming film called The Ugly Truth opposite Katherine Heigl. Here it is:

Bree Turner is an actress who began her journey in Hollywood as a professional dancer. Bree was a background dancer in such hit films as The Big Lebowski (1998), She’s All That (1999) and Mike Myers’ Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me (1999). Bree’s love for performing and being on stage makes acting a natural transition. Bree Turner can be seen opposite Katherine Heigl and Gerard Butler in The Ugly Truth- out July 24, 2009.

I caught up with Bree Turner via telephone from LA early in the morning, to talk about her beginnings in Hollywood, her upcoming film The Ugly Truth, future career plans and even some beauty secrets!

Bree Turner in The Ugly Truth.

Marta Walsh: How did you decide on a career in acting, and what were some of your first breaks as an actress?
Bree Turner: I started out as a dancer which got me on stage. I was pretty shy as a kid so my mom decided to enroll me in a dance class, and I fell in love with being on stage and performing. I danced all through my teens and early 20′s. Dancing brought me down to Los Angeles with a dance scholarship in UCLA.

I heard that you can actually make money as dancer, so I got a dance agent and began working in commercials, music videos, and the Grammys. I did that for about 6 years. I then decided to pursue acting. I was so in love with being on set and movie making. I loved movies since I was a baby. It was the only thing that would calm me down. I was very colicky as a child so my mom would take me to watch movies. Grease was the movie that would stop me from crying. Dancing, performing, and being on stage is all I’ve done forever, it’s all I really know.

MW: Tell us about your dancing roles in The Big Lebowski (1999) and Mike Myers’ Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged ME (1999)?
BT: The Big Lebowski was very cool, and I love that I’m in it, it’s one of my favorite movies. But the experience was torture because as one of the bowling pin girls on the set I had to wear a 2 and half foot high bowling pin head dress made out of heavy wood. It had to be secured on our heads. It would squeeze our brains it was so tight. The other dancers with me on the set and I couldn’t take the head dresses off because they were such pain to put back on. By the end of the shoot no one was talking to each other, we just sat there with our heads between our legs. Our costume weighted about 50 pounds, we couldn’t even go to the bathroom. It was hysterical and not glamorous at all. Being on Austin Powers film was the opposite experience. We were shooting in a secret mansion in Malibu, 76 degrees outside, blue skies, and we just hang out all day. Only my arm with a tennis racket ended up on screen and you can’t even see me. So sad!

MW: How would you describe your character in The Ugly Truth film with Katherine Heigl?
BT: I play Joy, Katherine Heigl’s best friend and co-worker. Katherine Heigl’s character in The Ugly Truth, Abby Richter, is a Type A, very professional, workaholic, and uptight with her love life. She even schedules her dates. She meets Gerard Butler, Mike Alexander, who is a bad boy. I’m the voice of reason for her, I push her when she needs to get out of her comfort zone. I’m there for her when she is complaining. I’m her body! It is a sparkly and fun romantic comedy that is actually honest and not manipulative. The relationships in the film are not forced. It was an easy relationship for me on screen and it was therefore super fun. It was a sweet bubbly role and I had good time doing it!

MW: What was it like working with Katherine Heigl and everyone on the set?
BT: It couldn’t be an easier experience. It was effortless. It truly didn’t feel like we were working

Bree Turner in The Ugly Truth.

MW: Which other Hollywood actors/actresses inspire you with your own acting?
BT: Katharine Hepburn was phenomenal, I would have loved to work with her. She was such a force, competing with all the boys of her time. She was quick and witty with her on screen persona. Philadelphia Story (1940) is one of my all time favorite romantic comedies. Diane Keaton and Debra Winger are delightful and deliciously humane on film and unexpected with their choices. Kate Winslet is timeless and a chameleon, she can play any age and any era. I deeply respect her talent. Kate Hudson is the cutest and makes me laugh.

MW: If you ever won an Oscar, who would be some of the people you would thank?
BT: My aunt Shelly who has been with me since day one of my career, she is a great support for me. My family, they never pressured me to get a ‘real job’ when times I wasn’t working. They are my support system since I was little girl. And my husband.

MW: What is next for Bree Turner?
BT: I’m in a middle of shooting a Cinfu movie. I always wanted to do an action film. My dream scene is a slow motion shot of me with a huge ridicules gun and a bikini walking towards the camera. Who doesn’t want that slow motion moment of them as a bad ass?

MW: Was it tough being photographed for Maxim?
BT: It was challenging at first but then I’ve loosened up and we actually had a really good time. I have a hard time standing still in front of the camera, so I’m not sure I’m best as a model. It is very unnatural for me to hold a pose. Then you get a bit conscious about your body parts. Having an adorable 20 something woman photographer by the name of Kelly Stewart helped! That definitely relaxed me, I thought as a woman she knew which were the right poses for me.

I keep my hair beautiful thanks to…
Kerastase Chroma Protect it gives my hair texture, and prevents by blonde hair from turning brassy.

My favorite skincare products are…
When I’m feeling super fancy I like to use skincare products from 3LAB. They have this cream that changed my skin! It’s called WW Cream, it’s expensive but I justify my purchase because it lasts me a long time. It totally minimized my pores, it gives a porcelain look to it, it’s amazing. I also love Neutrogena and their Oil Free Eye Makeup Remover. It’s the best! I also like Neutrogena Ultra-Soft Eye Makeup Remover Pads, ideal when you travel. It doesn’t leave any icky residue or greasiness.

I get my eyelashes looking long, full, and sexy using…
Whatever packaging looks good, I’ll go with that, but right now I’m using Victoria’s Secret Beauty Rush Mascaras. You can buy them at the Victoria’s Secret store and they are only $5 for 4 mascaras. They come in different cool shades like navy, purple, and green, and black.

The best lip-gloss I ever owned…
I love Bobbi Brown Lip Gloss because it tastes like caramel and it stays on for long time. It’s kind of sticky but I like it. If you want to wear a lip gloss you can’t be afraid that it’s sticky!

My signature fragrance is…
Jo Malone Pomegranate Noir, it was given to me as a gift. At first I didn’t like it that much. I’m a floral fruity type of fragrance girl and this one is woodsy. Then I start wearing it, and now I’m addicted to it! In high school I used to wear Jessica McClintock.

The one beauty product you will always find in my makeup bag is…
Aquaphor Healing Ointment Advanced Therapy which I like to use underneath my lipstick, because I’ve developed some kind of lipstick allergy.

My number one beauty secret is…
My beauty mantra is look like I’m not wearing makeup or the the no makeup makeup look. I also really love smoky eyes. I use MAC Eye Kohl Liner in Teddy which is a red brown shade with a bit of a sparkle. I apply it in the inner rim of my eyes, they immediately pop out yet look very natural. And my indulgent is getting my hair professionally blown out once a week. I feel a bit like a 50′s housewife, but it really lasts especially with a dry shampoo. To keep the blow out last, at night I put my hair in a scratchy. When I take it down in the morning and my hair has this great wave to it. This rally changed my life, lol.

I keep fit thanks to…
I work out, I’m not going to lie. I eat small portions. My weakness is candy like Gummy Bears in sour watermelon. I purposely don’t buy things that I’m going to binge on. My husband is not pleased because there is never anything interesting to eat in my kitchen. I also try to do something active everyday like go to the gym, a dance class, walk, and I take the stairs instead of the elevator.

The city I love the most…
New York City! I have a person inside me that would love to live in New York. I would love to do a show there for six months, rent a flat, and live the New York City lifestyle. Los Angeles will always remain our home base because it’s so easy to live here, the weather, the ocean, and the mountains. But there is energy to New York City that nowhere else in the world has.

One or two things some people may not know about Bree Turner…
I’m really good at video games, and like to stay up late watching TV. Like the other day, I watched Big Love until 4am!

It was great to discuss beauty secrets with Bree look for her in the upcoming movie The Ugly Truth and check her official website: www.breeturner.com

I’ve recently interviewed renowned plastic surgeon Dr Jennifer Walden for Beauty Interviews, and picked her brains on what to expect when considering plastic surgery.

Plastic Surgeon Dr Jennifer Walden.

Dr. Jennifer Walden is a Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon who is fellowship-trained in aesthetic surgery and board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. She currently is an associate attending in Plastic Surgery at Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital and Lenox Hill Hospital. She is also a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Her office is located at in Manhattan at 50 East 71st Street(on the corner of Park Avenue and 71st Street). Dr. Walden has been featured on CBS, ABC, and Fox News to discuss various topics in plastic surgery and has been quoted in magazines, such as: Vogue, Cosmopolitan and SELF.

In this interview Dr Walden talks to Marta Walsh about her fascination with plastic surgery which began in junior high, some of the challenges of being a woman plastic surgeon, her passion for sharing her knowledge in plastic surgery, gives advice to anyone considering plastic surgery for the first time, and best celebrity plastic surgery makeovers.

Marta Walsh: When did your fascination with plastic surgery begin?
Dr Jennifer Walden: My fascination with surgery began when I was in junior high, and one of our science projects was to dissect a pig. My science teacher told me I was going to be a surgeon after I completed the project in one day, after my lab partner left the room in disgust. As for plastic surgery, I decided I enjoyed the realm of producing visible surgical results and the immediate gratification that comes with that when I was a medical student in Texas.

MW: Which procedures surgical and non-surgical do you perform?
DJW: Surgical: Breast augmentation, breast lift, breast reduction, rhinoplasty, eyelid lift, browlift, facelift, liposuction, tummy tuck, arm lift (brachioplasty), otoplasty (ear pinning), breast reconstruction, lesion excision, facial reconstruction after skin cancer, cleft lip and palate repair. Non-surgical: Botox, Restylane, Radiesse, and Juvederm injection, chemical peels.

MW: What are some challenges, if any, do you have being a woman plastic surgeon?
DJW: In my opinion, young women in any profession have more hurdles to jump than their male counterparts, whether that field is broadcasting, government, medicine, law, or technology. This has to do with preconceived societal notions and norms that people expect women to fit into, and the way women are expected to look, act, and react to situations we are confronted with. Women also tend to juggle more as they wear so many different “hats” with childcare, childbearing, arrangement of household care, coordination of family life with profession, etc. That being said I have a wonderful practice with a very large female demographic, so I do indeed think that women appreciate having female doctor.

MW: You appear on TV and comment in many beauty magazines. Where does your passion for sharing your knowledge come from?
DJW: I used to be extremely shy as I child, so I find it wonderful that so many people ask my opinion and care to hear about it. Sharing knowledge in a public forum is another dimension of my profession that I find to be very rewarding and at times challenging; if I can effectively communicate and educate folks on a particular surgery or a disease process then I feel better at the end of the day about what I am doing.

MW: What do we need to look for when searching for the right plastic surgeon?
DJW: You should look for a plastic surgeon who is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, and who has done many of the procedure that you are seeking. Ask questions, look at his or her before and after photographs on that procedure, and ask to speak to a previous patient if necessary. At the very least, you should feel quite comfortable with your surgeon and her staff; if he or she gives you the creeps or makes you feel nervous, chances are that particular surgeon is not the right fit for you. Choose a surgeon who operates in an accredited office facility or hospital, and has privileges at a local hospital so that if an unforeseen emergency occurs, you will be treated in an expeditious and safe manner.

MW: What advice can you give to teenagers who are considering plastic surgery?
DJW: First of all, teenagers that are entering into plastic surgery must have the approval and consent of a parent since they are minors. If the patient’s legal guardian and the teenage patient agree upon the planned procedure and the plastic surgeon thinks that the procedure will be of benefit to the patient, then they can move forward. Surgeries like rhinoplasty (nasal reshaping), otoplasty (ear pinning), and breast lift or reduction can be very beneficial to a young person’s self-esteem. The teenager must be emotionally mature enough to understand what he or she is undergoing, as well as the recuperation time off from school and sports activities required for its success. If all of these things line up, then the teenager will likely have a positive experience and outcome. I would advise the teen and her parents to research the procedure and surgeon, and go to a plastic surgeon who is comforting, knowledgeable, and understands the teenager’s motivations.

MW: How much will a breast augmentation and a rhinoplasty will hurt physically and our pocket?
DJW: Physically, breast augmentation should not be excruciatingly painful. My patients usually describe a period in the first 3-5 days of discomfort and muscle tightness. Any acute pain after surgery is relieved by intravenous pain medications given at the surgical facility, and once you are home, if you feel pain coming on then it can be treated with prescription analgesics filled prior to the procedure. Rhinoplasty is not a tremendously painful procedure either. Patients describe a headache-type pain and nasal stuffiness that is relieved with pain medications and subsides within the first 48 hours. Financially, breast augmentation surgery in New York costs anywhere between $6-10,000, depending upon where you are having the procedure done and who’s doing it. Rhinoplasty typically costs between $7000-12,000. A portion of your rhinoplasty procedure called septoplasty (to straighten a deviated septum) may be covered by insurance, and average prices vary from one region of the country to another..

MW: What have been the key innovations in plastic surgery over the past few years?
DJW: Lasers for melting fat, ultrasonic fat reduction that does not require incisions and is completely noninvasive (Ultrashape), fat injections to the breast for breast implant and breast reconstruction-related deformities, highly cohesive shaped breast implants (Style 410 and Contour Profile Gel), newer hyaluronic acid wrinkle fillers that are not permanent and are more natural-feeling and appearing (Restylane, Perlane, Juvederm).

MW: In your opinion, what were some of the best celebrity plastic surgery makeovers?
DJW: Ashlee Simpson is a beautiful girl who had a nicely done rhinoplasty, possible chin surgery, and lip augmentation with soft tissue fillers. Confident in nature, she reinvented herself and became a pop icon afterwards. Not only did Adrienne Curry (America’s Next Top Model) share details of her right-left-breast-asymmetry and subsequent breast reconstruction, but she has also published online pictures in which she’s happily hugging her plastic surgeon. Nicole Kidman has come a long way from the frizzy-haired girl we met in the ’80s- Botox gives her eyebrows an arch and a wrinkle-free forehead. She may have also had some injectibles to her lips and nasolabial folds (the crease between her nose and corner of mouth), as well as surgical refinement of her nose (rhinoplasty).

MW: What is your philosophy about beauty?
DJW: Beauty starts from the inside. If you are not comfortable in your own skin, you will never be comfortable with the image you see in the mirror. For those people who are comfortable with their inner self, certain procedures and surgeries can be performed to address specific anatomical areas of concern in order to enhance the beautiful person that is already there. Plastic surgery and cosmetic procedures should be individualized to a person’s own anatomy and desires. I believe Coco Chanel when she said, “”In order to be irreplaceable one must always be different.”

MW: What do you love most about being a plastic surgeon?
DJW: Being able to really make people feel better about how they face the world, whether it is a child who has undergone a cleft lip repair, or a young woman who is is in embarrassed and discomforted by her appearance and undergoes a surgical breast procedure.

MW: What other passions do you have besides your work?
DJW: Spending time with my family back in Texas, exercising, shopping, reading, and traveling to places I’ve never been.

I’ve recently interviewed actress Shirly Brener for Beauty Interviews. I find Shirly’s interview captivating. Her passion for acting is contagious. And, I love people who are passionate about what they do:)

I also found out some of Shirly Brener’s beauty secrets. Doesn’t she looks beautiful, and SO fit! New year’s resolution for me is a Shirly Brener inspired yoga, maybe?

Here it is, my interview with Shirly Brener:

With several high-profile films to be released within the next few months, Shirly Brener has been a busy actress. She currently shares screen-time with legends Robert DeNiro and Al Pacino in Jon Avnet’s thriller, RIGHTEOUS KILL. Amongst her many projects, included is the much anticipated crime drama, STREETS OF BLOOD, also starring Sharon Stone and Val Kilmer.

Shirly also stars in indie film director, Jake Torem’s latest project, LETTING GO, in which she plays the manic depressive lead character, April, alongside Bokeem Woodbine and Christopher Knight. Shirly also plays the roles of actress and producer in the upcoming film, SESSION, starring Steven Bauer, to be released in 2009. Shirley can also be seen in the crime drama, HONOR, which will also be released in 2009 as well. Apart from her serious roles in dramas and thrillers, Shirly’s versatile acting skills come to life as she stars as “Britney” alongside Lindsay Lohan and Cheryl Hines in the upcoming comedy, LABOR PAINS, to be released in 2009.

In this interview Shirly Brener talks to Marta Walsh about her fascination with acting which began as a child riding along with her mom, a famous film and theatre Israeli actress, to all her plays and shoots. How at 21 she landed her first major motion film role in “Highjacking Hollywood”, what attracted her to the role of Natalya in Righteous Kill with Robert De Niro and Al Pacino, her acting experience in the upcoming movie Streets of Blood with Sharon Stone and Val Kilmer, her role of Britney alongside Lindsay Lohan and Cheryl Hines in an upcoming comedy Labor Pains, her dream acting role. Shirly Brener also reveals some of her beauty secrets, and her future career plans.

Marta Walsh: How did you end up in a career in acting?
Shirly Brener: My Mother was a famous film and theater actress in Israel. I used to ride along with her to all her plays and shoots and recite all her lines and the other actor’s lines and was fascinated by the whole thing. From an early age I took piano, dance, art and singing lessons. I always knew I was an artist. I asked my parents early on to get me into the business, but they didn’t want me to become a child actor. My mom and I shot a campaign for the French chocolate “Merci” when I was 2 years old, the ads and commercials aired all over Europe. Later on when I was 15 I joined the prestigious Theater program at Beverly Hills Highschool and by the time I was 21 shot my first major motion film starring Henry Thomas titled “Highjacking Hollywood”.

MW: What attracted you to the role of Natalya in Righteous Kill with Robert De Niro and Al Pacino?
MW: Gosh! What didn’t attract me to that role??? First of all working with two of the greatest legends of cinematic history and together in the same film and together in the same scenes with me! Second, the whole team of producers, director (Jon Avnet- “Fried Green Tomatoes”), other cast of A list people and the high budget all made it super lucrative. Also I really enjoy playing characters that are emotionally complex and challenged and that come from a darker place. Natalya is am Eastern European prostitute. I did a lot of research on human trafficking from Russia and the Balkans. It was fascinating and amazing all the detail I discovered. And working on the foreign Slavic accent which was a much welcome challenge. Finally the actual opportunity to share the set and learn from Robert De Niro and Al Pacino, really a pinnacle moment in my career. The icing on the cake was going to the premiere in New York and seeing my name big in the main titles- a gift from the producers.

MW: Can you tell us about your experience in the upcoming movie Street of Blood with Sharon Stone and Val Kilmer?
SB: I am obsessed with Streets of Blood. It was one of my favorite shoots to date. Charles Winkler the director (Irwin Winkler’s son- “Raging Bull”, “Goodfellas”) is one of those directors that just lets the actors go go go. He lets you explore what you have to bring to the character. When I met him for the film. I had my hair all strait and very little make up . He looked at me and said ” I know you can do this role but how are we going to rough you up?, you are way to classy looking”. I told him to trust me and that I will surprise him on the set. I play Selina who is a crack taking white girl living in the ghetto post Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans. I went to one of my favorite people in LA- Robert Easton, the greatest dialect coach! And worked on a deep Louisiana- black, plantation accent. I also watched a ton of films like Hustle and Flow and Spike Lee’s documentary “when the Levees Broke” for inspiration. Finally I walked into a hair salon deep in the LA Ghetto and asked for African braids all the way to my waistline, 6 hours later I turned into Selina. When I arrived in Louisiana I WAS the character, I embodied Selina. Charles was shocked! He barely recognized me. I had to do a lot of drugs in the film and I asked the props to get me any “fake” white powder to consume. Like I mentioned before, I immerse myself in my vision, my art and I do all it takes to bring the character the raw reality that think it deserves. I recently went and did some voice ADR on the film, it was the first time ever watching myself on screen where I didn’t see myself, I thought I was watching a documentary. I knew I reached a new level in my work and was very moved by how my commitment affected the result. The film looks a lot like “Traffic”, one of my all time favorites and I hope it does well when it comes out in a few months.

MW: You play the role of Britney alongside Lindsay Lohan and Cheryl Hines upcoming comedy Labor Pains. What’s Britney like in this film?
SB: Brittany is a 9 month preggers girl that has absolutely every pregnancy issue – acne, cancels, bloatness, back pain, hormonal mood swings. It’s very very funny. Lindsay was great to work with; she is so talented and so shy and sweet and pretty in person! Very different than her tabloid persona. I’m looking forward to see the final print. For Brittany, I got to draw upon my own experience when I was pregnant with my toddler- Mila. I had sciatica, and heartburn and couldn’t keep food down and couldn’t sleep. So for this role I just used my own self and life experience and added a comedic twist to it. I love romantic comedies; it’s a genre that I hope to do a lot more of. That’s actually my other side. It’s actually my REAL self. I try to see the humor in everything in life. I am always cracking jokes. Especially on sets where everybody forgets that you need to have fun while you are working otherwise why do this?. I’m always the girl looking for the comic relief, playing practical jokes. My humor is pretty crude though…it’s kinda perverted, but who wants an actor around that mopes all day. You want a fun person that can be lighthearted even when playing a drug addict. It’s a people’s business and a huge part of it is getting along with large groups of people. Nothing like humor do to that!

MW: What do you love most about acting?
SB: I love getting up at 5 am when it’s still dark outside and all the excitement on a set. I love the group and team effort aspects that go into making a film, TV show etc. I have always been a movie fan and buff. I double majored at USC part Art History part film Critical Studies. There were years that I watched a film per day. I like that movies or TV provide a sort of escape for people, whether on the humorous or the dark sides. I also really enjoy the social, political and artistic affects that you can make with great projects, send messages etc. Some examples of that could be “Schindler’s List”, “Monster”, “One flew over the cookoos Nest”, “The Godfather”. Personally I love what one of my teachers defines acting as anthropology- I study people and bring them to life; I study life and history. I enjoy becoming another person and making them as real as possible but always keeping my canvas an integral part of me. I love being part of the puzzle. But mostly let’s not forget that it’s called the “Entertainment Industry” and deep at heart, I am an entertainer and know that that is my job.

MW: What would be your dream acting job?
SB: My dream acting job? Hmmm….I’m currently on a film called “Touched” I play the Lead- Monique who is a Manic Depressive, bi-polar abusive mother. This is my dream role, I’m actually living my dream! It’s the best-written role I’ve ever done. And it’s based on a real life story, which is scary. I cannot even begin to describe how I went about prepping for this one- but the usual methods, online research, documentaries, films, real people that I interviewed. I have to go from extreme sides of emotions in a matter of seconds; it’s very challenging. I have very high hopes for this project and the character reminds me a bit of Jack Nicolson in The Shinning or Faye Dunway in Mommy Dearest and also Charleze Theron in Monster. Those are all career-defining roles. But aside from this one, I would really love to star as the lead in a big budget romantic comedy and id also love to play a Jewish girl in a world war II film. My dream acting role would actually be to work with directors of the like of Ridley Scott, Paul Thomas Anderson, Martin Scorseze , Darren Ornovskey and Woody Allen .

MW: What other exciting movie roles or projects are you currently working on, and what’s next for Shirly Brener?
SB: My guest appearance on Criminal Minds on CBS just airing and I just wrapped also on two TV films one is based on H.P Lovecraft’s The Dunwich Horror starring Dean Stockwell and the other is called Judgment Day. Mila (my 3-year-old) and I just shot short film that will air at the People’s Choice Awards. I have the Israeli crime drama- Honor- premiering in the spring. Also I have the film that I produced and acted in the psychological suspense thriller “Session” starring Steven Bauer (ScarFace, Traffic) circulating festivals premiering at Cannes. I have another lead in a film that I just wrapped titled ‘Letting Go” starring Bokeem Woodbine and Christopher Knight and Sam Golzari that is also doing the festival circuit now. And I just had another project greenlit for my producing end. A film title “Unraveled” which I will also star in. It’s in pre production currently and we start shooting in the spring in Louisiana . Currently I’m shooting the project “Touched” also starring Hollisten Coleman (Medium), Shalim Ortiz (Heroes) and Aloma Wright (Scrubs), till mid January. I’m working on many other things on the acting and producing ends and I have several irons in the fire, but nothing else that I can discuss right now.

MW: I keep my hair beautiful thanks to…
SB: Hair masks that have deep conditioning and the fact that I just cut 5 inches off of it. I’ve had long hair for about 10 years. When I got the offer for Labor Pains to play a sort of soccer mom, I thought it would be a good change to match the character. Then post the project my hubby said “go shorter…do a Katie Holmes” so I did…I love my very couture runway bob. It has since grown out to my shoulders, but since I have to change my hair a lot for roles it’s always a challenge to keep it healthy.

MW: My favorite skincare products are…
SB: I’ve never been a skin product girl, I don’t really believe in them, I kinda think a lot of the commercial manufactured ones don’t really work. My dermatologist dr. Julia Hunter got me hooked on this all natural line (because she knows I’m an all natural girl) – called Cosmedix, I use their natural pure C (its pure crushed vitamin c) on my face every night. I also have another Niacin- powered skin therapy product called NIA24, it’s a skin-strengthening complex. All these products can only be bought in specialty dermatology places or online.

MW: The best lip-gloss I ever owned…
SB: Is lip Glass by MAC, it makes your lips so juicy! think anything lips from Mac is amazing. Their glosses and liner line are truly remarkable.

SB: My signature fragrance is…
I don’t like fragrance too much. It’s always offensive to me when people put perfume and it’s too much and then others have to breathe a smell that they don’t really respond to. I like natural body mists in vanilla or peach or green tea flavors that are barely noticeable. I do like Addict by Dior, but its very strong, so only a little zip is enough for 2 days!! Feminine by Dolce & Gabbanna is great too as it has that fresh out of the shower scent.

SB: The one beauty product you will always find in my makeup bag is…
StudioFix powder by MAC, makes my skin flawless and not shiny.

SB: My number one beauty secret is…
Number one beauty secret is healthy living- a combination of nutrition supplements and exercise. I don’t drink alcohol, I don’t smoke, I don’t eat dairy, wheat, sugar, artificial sweeteners, and coffee. I focus on organic veggies and mostly turkey, chicken and fish and a bit of meat. ( I sometimes cheat of course! When Mila has a cake at a bday party ill totally indulge with her as I never want her to not be a kid and enjoy the fun things in life, and when I’m on a set I’ll raid the craft service table from time to time and eat some crap along with the rest of the crew..) But it’s all about balance! As long as you do something 80% of the time you are good to go. I have been taking supplements for several years, mostly omega 3 fish oils- those are miracle workers- they give you energy, they help your brain function and keep your metabolism going. In addition to all the regular vitamins and minerals that I add as today’s food is so processed, we don’t always get all the benefits from it, even when eating super healthy. I also am a Bikram yoga girl, I practice it regularly about 3 times per week, it keeps my body lean and I sweat out all the accumulated toxins in the heated room. I combine that with regular gym workouts that focus primarily on calisthenics -(I got so in shape in the last year, that I often get asked if I’m a trainer…I think I might add that to my resume in 2009 and start helping others) I add a flavor from time to time of dance classes, karate and tennis. I keep really active and I drink a lot of water.

MW: What one or two things some people may not know about Shirly Brener?
SB: I gained and lost 50lbs- with pregnancy, I still sleep with my highschool retainer to keep my teeth strait , I am working on compiling recipes for a cookbook that is based on my gourmet cooking- I often host pretty extravagant dinners at my house. I love being a mom and I regard Mila is my most precious achievement to date!

It was great to discuss beauty secrets with Shirly make sure to check out her role in Righteous Kill, and the upcoming Streets of Blood and Labor Pains.

Couple of months ago, I had an amazing opportunity to interview the beautiful Patrica Kara for Beauty Interviews.

Patricia Kara is an actress, model, and a TV personality best known as Deal or No Deal’s #9. Patricia along with Tameka Jacobs, were the only ones chosen to be on the new Daytime Deal or No Deal with Howie Mandel, which premiered in September 2008. In addition, Patricia has appeared in over 20 television programs, such as, E! Entertainment’s Wild On, Extra, and the Golden Globes.

Read my interview with Patricia Kara where we chat about her love for hosting TV shows, how Deal or No deal revolutionized her career, beauty secrets, her upcoming calendar, and plans for the future.

Why have you decided on a career in hosting and reporting?
I started out with modeling about twenty years ago back in Chicago. That led me to Florida and New York. When I was in New York my modeling agency started to send me out to auditions for hosting and acting. I started booking jobs here and there. One job led to the next job. Then I moved to LA and kept working. And I love it! Anytime I can talk and get paid for it to, is just great. I find my job real easy, it is what I love to do. With hosting I get to try new and different things, depending on what I’m hosting about, and being part of them in a way most people don’t get to do. For example, if I do a show about wake boarding, I’ll try wake boarding. I’ve done a fishing show. I’ve also hosted a lot of sporting events, such as Kentucky Derby.

How would you describe your interviewing and reporting style?
For me it is about being in the moment, and researching about the event or person I’m going to interview ahead of time. But I also love to interview in a spontaneous style as well just because when you are in the moment answers to my questions can lead to new questions. Therefore, I don’t like to plan too much, because it never works out that way. Listening to the person I interview opens up to new things you never knew about that person before and to a discussion.

Can you tell us about your experience as Deal or No Deal’s case #9?
Deal or No Deal has changed my life in a huge way, and it also changed the lives of the other contesters. Before I’ve actually booked the show I had just told my agent that I was no longer going to model and I want to focus on acting and hosting. When I did finally booked the show I said to myself: “OK sure there will be couple days of work and I’ll be done with modeling”…These few days turned into a fourth season! It has opened up so many other doors. I am so happy I happened to get the show. Now I work on the daytime Deal or No Deal show too which started in the beginning of September. There are only two girls on the show, and I’m one them.

How is daytime Deal or No Deal different than the evening Deal or No Deal?
It’s a faster pace show, but both shows are great. Instead of models holding the cases its contestants and instead of 26 cases there are 22 cases. There is a wheel with numbers that I get to spin, and the number the wheel lands on will be the number of the contestant that gets to play for the day. And the prize is $500,000 instead of $1,000,000. And it’s a half hour episode not one hour. The daytime Deal or No Deal is on five days a week and the night one only couple times a week. So the daytime Deal or No Deal is a little different than the night one but the excitement is the same. It is just as crazy and fun.

What projects are you currently working on?
I just got to interview for Fox movie channel all the different casts for the fall line-up that are coming up this season. I got to interview people from shows like Prison Break, and 24. Other than that, I’m working on my first 2009 calendar that will come out in October 1st. Part of the proceeds from my calendar will go to Women for Women. I’m working with a company called Beauty Society, and that’s how the idea came about.

What tips can you give us for keeping in shape?
My big thing is that I walk every day. For at least 30 minutes I’ll try to walk around my neighborhood, or in the gym. I also take the stairs instead of the elevator. So I’m conscious about constantly being active just like when we were kids. I’m pretty high energy anyways, I can’t just stand still. I also love dancing! I’ll create dances for myself or take any opportunity to dance like go out for dancing.

What would be your dream hosting job?
I would love to host my shows that are not just sitting around in a studio but going out and trying different things. Or even sitcoms or comedy films.

How do you keep your hair so beautiful?
I’m lucky to have my sister as my hairdresser, she takes care of my hair very well. I get damaged hair from being on the set all the time, flat iron and highlights so I’m big on conditioning. I use Nexus, no other conditioner works better on my hair. I use Bed Head Curl Activator. We are very big with BigSexyHair hairspray, this stuff is great it lasts all day, especially during show time. For everyday, and If I want to hold my hairdo but still be able to comb it I use Shaper by Sebastian. I live with these products I use them almost every day.

What are some of your favorite skincare products?
I use Mario Badescu and Beauty society. I also like Semeli which is a Greek skincare line, their moisturizers and scrubs are really good.

How do you get ready with hair and makeup for the Deal or No Deal show?
We have a hair and makeup team of about 13 or 14 people. It takes 2 and half hours to get the hair and makeup for all the models. We also have a wardrobe team Dina and Jenny which are really great to help us with the outfits and jewelry. We have 3 fitting for each dress, so it’s a process. Every week we go in for a fitting. We have our dresses tailor made to our body.

What is your favorite mascara?
Tarte mascara is one of the best mascaras I have ever worn! It is just as good as fake eye lashes.

What is the best lip gloss you ever owned?
MAC Cosmetics LIPGELEE, it is a gloss with a tint of color and it goes nice and smooth on the lips.

What is your signature fragrance?
I absolutely love CHANEL COCO Mademoiselle, it has an amazing lasting power on you. It stays on you and never wears off, and it smells great on everybody. My second favorite is CHANEL CHANCE. GUCCI Rush smells similar to CHANEL COCO Mademoiselle, but it doesn’t smell the same on me.

What is your number one beauty secret?
Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize! And I mean from head to toe. I also do scrubs in between, I always have a scrub in the shower like an apricot scrub. I love Nivea Soft Milk Body Lotion with Ginkgo Extract, Shea Butter and vitamin E, it is the best moisturizer ever.

Which celebrity you find beautiful?
Jennifer Aniston, she just gets prettier and prettier with age. Jennifer has a very natural look and beauty which I love.

Who would you love to invite to your ultimate dinner party?
It has to be many people because the diversity creates great conversations.

What city do you love the most?
Athens, the Greek islands, and New York City.

What one or two things some people may not know about Patricia Kara?
I think I’m an open book and I’m all about my family and I love to be active all the time.
