Play on Curls Fresh Waves for a New Generation on the Fall/Winter 2011 Bridal Runways. The Fall/Winter 2011 Bridal Fashion Week hairstyles took a fresh approach to embrace a modern, youthful bride. Redken Session Stylist Giovanni Giuntoli created the distinct looks at the Christos, Kenneth Pool, and Amsale collections, taking each in its own direction.

“This season the traditionally preppy Christos look evolved for the next generation, and the hair embraces this edgier attitude,” Giuntoli said. “The look is down, when it is typically up, resulting in a youthful, casual after-wedding look that’s flattering and flirty.”

To achieve the look, prep hair to add texture and extra hold with Redken wool shake 08 gel-slush texturizer and then layer on spray starch 15 versatile ironing spray. Part the hair wherever it best reflects the face shape, whether it be left, right or center. Set the curls with a 1-inch curling iron and pin in place until dry. Let the curls out and pull until you have soft waves, finishing the style with fashion work 12 versatile working spray to achieve a silky matte finish. “These waves are not tight, they’re fresh. We’re trying to get away from the corkscrew,” Giuntoli explained.

Cutting Edge Pleat –seen at Kenneth Pool

“This up-do reflects the high-end Kenneth Pool look, with a luxury finish to the hair. This line is more avant-garde, more high-fashion, and so we created a striking, contemporary up-do that pushes the envelope,” Giuntoli said.

To create this look, prep the hair by blow-drying with aerate 08 bodifying cream-mousse, applying at the roots and through the ends for all-over body and texture. Then fold all of the hair except for the front section two inches from the crown into a pleat. Curl small sections of the front two inches with a one-inch barrel and pin each up in place atop the head. “The curls add a softer silhouette for height and a light, airy texture that you can almost see through.” Giuntoli said. For added shine and hold, finish the look with pure force 16 non-aerosol fixing spray.

Statement Pony – seen at Amsale

“This season of Amsale reflects another evolution and a new approach, with a natural, youthful ponytail with soft with volume at the crown for added glamour,” Giuntoli said.

Obtain this look by first sectioning off the hair at the crown, misting with forceful 23 super strength finishing spray and then back brushing for height. “Play with the shape and height at the crown to keep it tailored to your face shape,” Giuntoli explained. Next gather the hair into a pony and wrap a one-inch section around the elastic. Leave a natural wave in the pony tail and mist with shine flash 02 glistening mist for a glossy polish.

These fresh takes on waves reflected an edgier, younger bride and can guide you as you search to achieve the perfect look you need on the big day. Loose, Flirty Updo seen at Christos

Up, Up and Away. Timeless Romantic Updos Get Flirty Updates on the Spring/Summer 2011 Bridal Runways. The Spring/Summer 2011 Bridal Fashion Week hairstyles featured romantic, flirty updos that made for three beautiful, ultra-flattering looks.

Redken Session Stylist and Tearsheet Artistic Director Giovanni Giuntoli, kept true to the visions of the designers at Christos, Kenneth Poole, and Amsale, emphasizing each line’s distinct clientele. This individuality could be seen in youthful luxury, empowered sophistication, and classy clean updos. Use these styles as inspiration for your own big day!

Loose, Flirty Updo – seen at Christos

“The Christos woman is classy with a flirty, playful side,” Giuntoli said. “It’s a classic shape that she could have done herself, but with more of a luxurious feel.”

To achieve the look, blow-dry hair with Redken aerate 08 bodifying cream-mousse to add volume, and then mist with spray starch 15 versatile ironing spray and flat iron the ends. “It’s more about the bend in the hair than the curl,” Giuntoli explained. Depending on your hair type, mist the crown with wool shake 08 gel-slush texturizer, then gather at the top and twist it into a knot. Finish with fashion work 12 versatile working spray for hold. For this style, it’s more important to gather the hair loosely into the shape than to brush and pull it tight to the head.

Avant-Garde Twist –seen at Kenneth Poole

“This season balanced the hair with the big gowns at Kenneth Poole,” says Giuntoli. “This style structure has been seen in the past, but it has even more height and drama this year. It elongates the neck, adds instant sophistication, and empowers the female form while nodding to classic avant-garde looks.”

If you’ve chosen a statement gown, get this look by first finger blow-drying the hair with velvet gelatine 06 cushioning blow-dry gel. Then, backcomb the hair at the scalp for height before twisting it up and under into a French twist and securing with pins. Finish with forceful 23 super strength finishing spray. Don’t forget to ask a bridesmaid to hold on to a mini size for touch-ups to ensure that your style stays in place all night long.

High Chignon – seen at Amsale

“The 2011 Amsale look was classically inspired yet freshly approached. The sleek chignon is from years past but this version presents a new view with the croissant shape placed higher atop the head,” Giuntoli said.

For this look, start with a directional blow dry toward the high crown area, and then pulled hair into a ponytail at the crown. Next spray the ponytail with pure force 16 non-aerosol fixing spray throughout and then pin up around itself into the croissant shape. Finish the style with glass 01 smoothing serum to add extra gloss and glamour.

Bridal Hair Trends for Fall/Winter 2010 with Redken: Soft, loose looks – whether in ponytails, relaxed chignons, or a textured French pleat, dominated the Fall/Winter 2010 Bridal Fashion Week hairstyles in New York City this spring!

To compliment the lavish, detailed gowns for the coming season, Redken Session Stylist Giovanni Giuntoli focused on a soft, feminine approach to the hair to spotlight the beautifully bare shoulders and detailed designs of the gowns at the Amsale, Christos and Kenneth Pool shows. When it comes to bridal hair, “Balance is key to everything,” says Giuntoli. “Just because a dress is simple or the gown is elaborate doesn’t necessarily mean the hair has to be the exact same feel. Big gowns can work with simple hair and vice versa.”

How to get this bridal hair: At Amsale, the look was inspired by a soft approach: “The hair at Amsale had a soft but elegant approach to the classic ponytail,” said Giuntoli. To create, he prepped with Redken touch control 05 volumizing texture whip on dry hair and then misted spray starch 15 versatile ironing spray all over while hair was down. Then he created a strong center part and curled mid-shaft to ends with a curling iron, rolling the curls away from the face to create movement. He clipped while curls were cooling and then use a wide toothed comb to loosen the curls and create a bit of texture. Then, hair was gathered into a ponytail and a small section of hair was wrapped around the elastic and secured underneath the ponytail.

How to get this bridal hair: The undone chignon at Christos put a playful spin on the classic bun,” remarked Giuntoli. To create, Giuntoli created a ponytail in the back of the head and prepped with Style Connection wool shake 08 gel-slush texturizer. Then, using a large barrel iron, he created a slight ‘bend’ in the hair by wrapping large pieces around the iron. Once hair was finished, he gathered into a chignon. “Make sure to pin as you swirl the ponytail around itself into the bun but leave a 1-2 inch section out of the updo.” Says Giuntoli, “This really puts a modern touch on the otherwise simple style.” To secure entire look, use a hairspray like headplay 12 pliable working spray to secure fly away without making the updo too shiny or sticky.

Kenneth Pool

How to get this bridal hair: The ultra lavish Kenneth Pool put on a finale to the trifecta of shows that really wowed the crowd. To compliment the detailed and intricate beading and fabrics of the Pool designs, Giuntoli created a classic French pleat, but updated with slight texture and extra height at the crown of the head. To create, dry hair was prepped with Redken touch control 05 volumizing texture whip and blow-dried through for added volume. Next, Giuntoli blow-dryed the rest of the hair towards the back of the head and gathered into a low ponytail at the nape of the neck. To create the pleat, he twisted the hair in upon itself as he moved up to the crown of the head securing along with hair pins. To tuck the ends of the tail in, Giuntoli recommends curling the ends with a one-inch curling iron so they will easily tuck into the twist. Place the end pieces in and pin with hair pins so none of the ends can be seen. To finish spritz with vinyl glam 02 mega shine spray for shine.

Tying ‘The Knot’!

Bridal Runway Chignons and Twists Reflect Looser, Relaxed Versions of the Classics: This season, Bridal Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2010 updos reflected looser, imperfect styles to contrast with the superbly elegant gowns sewn to perfection at the Amsale, Christos and Kenneth Pool shows. Since Brides today demand perfection in all aspects of the day, why not ‘relax’ a bit when it comes to their hair? Whether it was loosely-opened chignons, playful accessories, or imperfectly textured French Twists, Tearsheet Artistic Director Giovanni Giuntoli, who instructs stylists through on-set styling classes in New York City, created each look to reflect a no-fuss style that allowed each bride to glide down the aisle with angelic perfection. The best news? Each of the three looks can be easily re-created, of course, with some help from a friend:

Swirled-Open Chignon – seen at Christos (see image above): “At Christos, we wanted to accentuate the young, modern, clean looks with a twist on the classdonut. We took inspiration from the typical ballerina bun, but softened it by adding texture and a bit of lift to the crown and sides. Like she did it herself, with a little help from a friend” explains Giuntoli.ic bun, creating a looser folded.

To create, first apply Redken spray starch 15 versatile ironing spray (SRP $13.00) throughout hair to allow for extra texture and support of the shape. Make a horizontal part at the crown 4 inches from forehead and section off. Use spritzes of workforce 09 flexible volumizing spray ($15.00) to reduce flyaways as you pull back and secure with an elastic just above the occipital bone. Next, take front section and spray fabricate 03 heat active texturizer (SRP $13.00) through and backcomb lightly in sections to create the height that will show at the top of the finished style. Lightly brush back to meet with the ponytail making sure to keep the textured height, and secure all together with an elastic. Grab the ponytail and swirl it loosely into an open chignon around itself and pin as you create a ‘donut-like’ shape. Hide ends into bun and pin with hair pins to secure. Loosely pull out a few pieces on the sides and top for added texture to the silhouette. Lastyly, finish total look with workforce 09 flexible volumizing spray (SRP $15.00) for a flexible hold

Accessorized Updo – seen at Kenneth Poole: “We had a quick turnaround time between Christos and Kenneth Pool, so to easily create a more elaborate look to reflect the added glamour in the line, we tightened the bun and added a large flower orrnation, which instantly gave the look added sophistication to make a bigger, more flirty statement” said Giuntoli.

Try it yourself! Create as you would with the swirled open chignon, just tighten the chignon just a bit more to create a strong base for the ornation. Take a large flower ornation and pin on side of the chignon with bobby pins so you can see the detailing of the headpiece from the front to add ultimate attention to the hairstyle. Finish total look with forceful 23 super strength finishing spray (SRP $15.00) to hold the headpiece and the style in place.

Textured French Pleat with Height – seen at Amsale: “For the timeless Amsale collection, we returned to the classic French pleat, but put a modern spin on it; think Breakfast at Tiffany’s, but a little deconstructed and some extra attitude.” says Giuntoli.

To create, mist spray starch 15 versatile ironing spray (SRP $13.00) through the top of head and using a 1 1/2 inch curling iron, curl front section of hair back from hairline in the direction of the back of the head – this gets get the hair to move in the direction you will be pulling it back into. Spray fabricate 03 heat-active texturizer (SRP $13.00) throughout entire head and back comb section by section to creating a voluminous, airy texture. Using a bristle brush, loosely comb hair back into a ponytail, keeping the soft airy height at the crown but still tight at the sides. Create the pleat by loosely twisting ponytail in upon itself up towards the top of the head, pinning as you move up until you get to the top of the twist, tucking ends in and securing with pins. Pull out a just a few airy pieces from the twist to create texture, and finish with workforce 09 flexible volumizing spray (SRP $15.00) for extra hold that will keep the pleat in place, lasting all night.

With these easy tips for more relaxed styles of the classics, show your guests that you can “let loose” a bit with your updo and still have the perfect wedding style!
