Backstage at Mandy Coon for Spring 2012

Here’s how…

SHOW: Mandy Coon

LEAD ARTIST: Francelle, NARS National Makeup Artist

TREND: Cool, lavender eyes and dewy skin

DESIGNER INSPIRATION: “This collection is a graduation, of sorts, for me. I was inspired by these rocks and crystals that I’ve loved since I was a child – the texture, the metallics,” said designer Mandy Coon. “There is something so cool, and tough, about them but then the pleats in the collection add a touch of femininity.”

LOOK: “It’s girly because of the eye color, but it’s tough since there’s no eyeliner,” said Francelle, NARS National Makeup Artist. “The skin is dewy for a really whimsical, effortless affect. I also took a cue from Mark Rothko’s color-blocking and created a modern version on the eye with purple and pink.”

“We’ve been seeing a lot of smaller shapes this season, and the look for Louis Vuitton is very sophisticated, V-shaped twist.” –Guido, Redken Creative Consultant

Redken Products & how to:

-wool shake 08 gel slush texturizer

-forceful 23 super strength finishing spray

- Prep hair by blow drying wool shake 08 into the hair with a large round brush.

- Create a left side part and pull out the first 2 inches of hair above the right eye

- Create a swoop with this hair so it covers the right eye.

- Beginning on the right side of the head, take the longer portion of the section that just covered the eye and begin twisting the hair inward, adding more hair as you twist and create the twist in a diagonal shape towards the nape of the neck.

- On the left side, begin twisting hair inward adding more hair as you twist diagonal towards the nape of the neck.

- Once the two sides meet, twist the hair into itself and secure with pins.

“This is another take on a small shape, rather than having the hair tight, this is a looser alternative to a small head style.” –Guido, Redken Creative Consultant

Redken Products & how to:

- wool shake 08 gel-slush texturizer

Create the look:

- Blow-dry wool shake 08 into the hair

- Create a two-inch center part

- Brush the hair into a low ponytail (about 2 inches from the bottom)

- Roll the ponytail inward and up to the nape of the neck, creating a roll effect and secure with pins at the nape

“Karl Lagerfeld showed me a sketch he had drawn of a girl with smoky eyes, so it was clear that we would put the focus on the eyes for this show…

“…The inspiration for the color came from the black-white-green French garden that was recreated in the Grand Palais, from the glow that we can find in black, grey and white pearls, and the enamel that Karl integrated into the costume jewelry. I created deep, dark smoky eyes on a luminous fresh face with tinted, dewy lips. Nails were graphic and strong, and a thin black line was drawn in the hair.”- Peter Philips, Global Creative Director of CHANEL Makeup

Peter used the following CHANEL products to create the runway beauty looks:

Paris Fashion Week SS 2011. At Alexander McQueen, the fantastical look was basket-weaved panels inspired by nature, straw, wicker and basket weaving.

“The collection is very inspired by nature and creating things from what is around you. This style was inspired by whicker, straw and basket weaving – it’s a fantasy hairstyle and not meant to be wearable.” –Guido, Redken Creative Consultant

Redken Products & how to:

- spray starch 15 versatile ironing spray

- forceful 23 super strength finishing spray

Create the Look:

- Center part the hair from the roots to crown.

- Divide the hair into 3 panels (left side, right side, and back).

- Taking 1 panel at a time, divide the hair into 1” panels and apply spray starch 15 versatile ironing spray all over.

- Flat iron each 1” panel so it’s completely straight.

- Beginning on the left side of the main panel, take a 1” panel towards the top and begin weaving this horizontally through the other panels. Keep weaving until the horizontal panels reach the end of the hair’s length.

- Take the final portions and braid until the end.

- Follow the steps above for each of the two other panels (left side, right side, back).

- Once the back panel is complete, fold the panel upwards in thirds and secure with pins so it lays flat against the head.

- Finish with forceful 23 super strength finishing spray to secure style and reduce fly aways.
