This weekend at the Loewe, Jean Paul Gaultier, Sonia Rykiel and Akris shows in Paris, Redken Creative Consultant Guido was backstage creating the hairstyles to compliment the designers’ Fall/Winter 2010 collections. Find out the must-have products and inspiration from each show!

LOEWE

For a 1940s, sculpted shape of the hair at Loewe, Guido’s key product was Redken forceful 23 hairspray that kept the look in place and gave it that ‘plastic’ feel: “The clothes at Loewe are very feminine, with a few suits, so we wanted to nod to the 1940s and create a sophisticated, sculpted shape with the hair.” -Guido, Redken Creative Consultant

Products:

Redken forceful 23 super strength finishing spray

Redken fabricate 03 heat active texturizer

Hair Tutorial:

1. Begin with damp hair and blow-dry fabricate 03 heat active texturizer into hair.

2. Create a very straight center part in the hair.

3. On both sides of the head, from the part to the ear, create a few waves with the hair and secure with hair clips to help set.

4. Spray forceful 23 super strength finishing spray over waves and apply heat from dryer to set the wave with forceful so hair doesn’t move.

5. Using a donut pad, roll the remaining portion of the hair up into the donut until reaching the nape of the neck. Secure with pins.

6. Spray forceful 23 super strength finishing spray all over hair to create a “plastic, cartoon-like” effect.

JEAN PAUL GAULTIER

The choice accessories for the designer this season were hats and turbans to give a ‘world traveler’ emphasis to the line. For the four looks that didn’t have these accessories, Guido created an undone side ponytail. “Jean Paul Gaultier’s collection was influenced by the world traveler. The collection featured many hats and turbans as signature pieces, so the hair took a step back.” -Guido, Redken Creative Consultant

Products:

Redken thickening lotion 06 body builder

Hair Tutorial:

1. Blow-dry thickening lotion 06 body builder into hair.

2. Create a messy side part.

3. Pull hair into a right-side ponytail and secure with elastic.

SONIA RYKIEL

For the romantic Sonia Rykiel line, hair was pulled into a low ponytail with a left side part with the front section sweeping over the right eye. The pieces softly fell out around the face and complemented the pom pom headbands worn by all the models. “Sonia Rykiel really lets models have fun on the runway, a certain ‘joie de vivre.’ The hairstyle is modern yet playful and complements the artistic, femme-fatal clothing and the Parisian designer who takes inspiration from the ultra artsy Left Bank. “ -Guido, Redken Creative Consultant

Products:

- Redken fabricate 03 heat active texturizer

- Redken quick dry 18 instant finishing spray

Hair Tutorial:

1. On damp hair, rough dry fabricate 03 heat active texturizer into hair.

2. Using a curling iron, twist hair into soft curls.

3. Brush out curls, to look more like a wave.

4. Create a side part on the left side of the head.

5. Pull hair into low ponytail and secure with elastic.

6. Loosen hair on the left side by the hair line so hair covers the right eye.

7. Lightly spray quick dry 18 instant finishing spray for finish and hold.

AKRIS

For this minimalistic Swiss design house, Guido complemented the looks with a low ponytail with a left side part for a style that was tailored, modern and feminine. “The hairstyle was inspired by the collection – simple, modern, and wearable.” -Guido, Redken Creative Consultant

Create the Look:
1- Section hair into two sections by a horizontal part at ear height.

2- Clip top portion aside and blow dry in thickening lotion 06 body builder into bottom half of hair for volume and secure into a ponytail. Slide a donut over this ponytail and secure pieces around to cover entire donut.

3- Take top portion that was clipped off and blow dry in thickening lotion 06 body builder through top section and then backcomb to create textured volume.

4- Smooth hardwear 16 super strong gel into hair to pull top section smoothly and perfectly over donut portion and secure at nape of neck.

5- Create that lacquer look by applying heavy layers of forceful 23 super strength finishing spray directly to chignon and sides to secure with ultimate hold.

Hair Trends With Redken Fall/Winter 2009 according to Guido, Redken Creative Consultant:

A Strong Presence: “This season, it’s all about the ‘do’…hairstyles that have a strong presence, that push the boundaries. These kind of looks are dependent on the use-and in many cases the overuse-of hair products.”

A Positive Force: “Hair now is a reaction to the times we’re living in. It’s strong, positive and forceful-it’s empowering to women.”

A Way To Update And Adapt: “We’ve taken looks from the 40s, 50s, and 80s and updated them with new elements. Women can adapt these looks for everyday by toning down a bit. If a look has extreme shine, use a little less shine product. If it has exaggerated volume, lessen the height.”

Hair Trends With Redken Fall/Winter 2009: New Classics: Traditional Styles With A Modern Twist.

Classic ‘dos including French twists, chignons and menswear-inspired quiffs are returning to the runway. Far from being retro, these looks are thoroughly modernized with unexpected, softly subversive touches.

As seen at: Akris-Bottega Veneta-Clavin Klein-Loewe-Louis Vuitton-Luelle-Marc Jacobs-Miu Miu-Polilini-Prada-Ralph Lauren

Tips: Revolutionize the classic French twist with height and texture worthy of Marie Antoinette, as seen at Louis Vuitton. Apply thickening lotion 06 body builder, rough dry, curl, backcomb and then pin into a messy French twist.

Define shapes require maximum hold. At Marc Jacobs, Guido used forceful 23 super strength finishing spray to keep his ’80s-inspired ‘dos in place. Layer it on for the extreme, over-lacquered finish seen on the runway.

The newest chignons feature a strong side part, with one side swept over the eye and the other tucked behind the ear, Mist on vinyl glam 02 mega shine spray and quick dry 18 instant finishing spray for the look seen at Miu Miu.

All products are by Redken. Essential tools: Paddle brush. Blow dryer nozzle. Curling iron. Flat iron.

Here are some tips about heat styling by GUIDO Redken’s Creative Consultant:

There are so many different sized curling irons-how do I know which one to choose?
It depends on two things. First, you need to decide what size curl you want to create. Second, you have to account for the fact that the curl will loosen throughout the day-you should choose a barrel that’s slightly smaller than the size of the curl you want. For loose waves, I find 1-inch curling iron works best. At first the curls might appear a bit too tight, but they’ll loosen up perfectly.

How can I prevent flat-ironed hair from looking lifeless?
Apply a heat protectant product like iron silk 07 ultra straightening spray to each section before you flat-iron. Hair that’s continually exposed to heat without any protection will end up looking dull, damaged and lifeless. The other trick is to kick the ends out. Just turn your wrist slightly as you’re bringing the iron down to the end of the section. It gives you movement and texture, so hair doesn’t look so severe.

How do you prepare hair for heat styling?
For a blow-dry, apply a heat protectant cream or gel, like blown away 09 protective blow-dry gel, to damp hair and comb it through so it’s thoroughly distributed. You want to make sure that your mid-lengths and ends, which are the most prone to damage, are evenly coated. For curling or flat-ironing, mist a heat protectant spray like iron silk 07 ultra straightening spray or spray starch 15 versatile ironing spray on each section (hair should be dry) before you use your hot tool.

What’s the right way to use hot rollers?
If you want to add volume and wave, lift your section up, place the roller underneath and roll down toward your scalp. For waves with minimal volume, don’t lift the section- just place the roller on top and roll up.

What are the biggest mistakes women make when using hot tools, and how can
you fix them?
Sometimes people think they don’t need to prep hair with a heat-protectant product, but it’s really an essential step. The product helps to keep your hair healthy and lock in shape. Another thing I notice is that people will curl or flat-iron their hair without making sure the section is combed neatly. If your section is messy, you won’t have a good result.

A return to simplicity…”This season, it’s all about paring down the hair. Hair had a very modern feel, with styles that stayed close to the head. Loose hair was the exception, not the rule.”

An added touch…”Adding a hair accessory like a hat or a headband can really complement an over-all look.”

A changeable nature…”Heat styling is crucial when you’re backstage. I need products that protect the hair and lock in shape, so I can transform models’ hair from one show to another.”
-GUIDO, Redken Creative Consultant.

Hair Trend 1: Perfectly Undone. Softly reconstructed looks with a natural matte finishing. Ponytails, knots and half-ponytails had a casual, disheveled look that played perfectly against spring’s ladylike silhouettes.
Finishes were satin-matte, with an easy elegance.

AS SEEN AT:
Balenciaga • Calvin Klein • Celine • Marc Jacobs • Peter Som • Pollini • Salvatore Ferragamo.

Peter Som, Pollini, Calvin Klein.

How to get perfectly undone hairstyle:
• Hair shouldn’t look tamed this season. Instead, bring out natural texture by applying thickening lotion 06 body builder and tousling with your fingers as you blow-dry.

• Get the casual-chic half-ponytail seen at Peter Som: Mist sections of dry hair with spray starch 15 versatile ironing spray, curl with a 1-inch curling iron, gather into a half-ponytail with volume at the crown and secure with bobby pins. Pull pieces loose to enhance the disheveled effect.

• Create the easiest updo, as seen at Calvin Klein. Apply blown away 09 protective blow-dry gel and blow-dry with a paddle brush. Part hair with your fingers and gather into a low ponytail, leaving the tail in a loop with the ends sticking out.

Hair Trend 2: Middle Ground. Classic chic. The middle part makes a comeback. A styling classic, the middle part can add edge to an updo or infuse a long, loose style with a shot of casual glam.

AS SEEN AT:
Balenciaga • Calvin Klein • GAP • Jonathan Saunders • Marc Jacobs • Peter Som • PHI • Philosophy • Roberto Cavalli • Versace.

GAP, Versace, PHI.

How to get the perfect middle part hairstyle:

• Make beachy waves work appropriate, as seen at GAP. Mist fabricate 03 heat-active texturizer on damp hair, rough dry to bring out waves, then create a clean center part. Enhance waves and de-frizz with a dab of elastic works 09 waving gel.

• Create the super-sleek ponytail seen at Versace. Blow-dry hair straight, create a middle part and use a brush to gather hair into a smooth, low ponytail. Working section-by-section, mist iron silk 07 ultra straightening spray on the tail and flat-iron. Lightly mist vinyl glam 02 mega shine spray all-over, followed by quick dry 18 instant finishing spray.

• Go a little left-or right-of center. If a middle part doesn’t flatter your face, create a part that sits slightly to either side. The effect is softer but still on-trend.

Hair trend 3: Up and Away. Clean lines and easy updos keep hair off face the face.

Whether swept up or slicked back, this season’s hair was kept away from the face, with no bangs or stray pieces to disturb the clean, simple style.

AS SEEN AT:
Akris • Balenciaga • Calvin Klein • Celine • GAP • Issa • Jonathan Saunders • Lanvin • Louis Vuitton • Luella
Marc Jacobs • Marc by Marc Jacobs • PHI • Pollini • Prada • Pringle of Scotland • Ralph Lauren • Roberto Cavalli • Salvatore Ferragamo.

Pringle of Scotland, Lanvin, Prada.

How to get Up and Away Hairstyle:

• Play with textures, as seen at Pringle of Scotland. Apply thickening lotion 06 body builder to damp hair and rough-dry. Warm up a dab of hardwear 16 super strong gel in your palms, smooth the hair around your face back toward the crown, and comb through. Add shine with vinyl glam 02 mega shine spray.

• Keep hair in control. At Prada, Guido pulled hair into a classic French twist with height on top, then gave the style extreme edge by spraying with forceful 23 super strength finishing spray until he achieved a lacquered look. For everyday, a quick mist will tame fly-aways and keep your updo in place.

• Try an updo that combines sleekness with texture, as seen at Lanvin. Apply blown away 09 protective blow-dry gel to damp hair and rough-dry. Use your fingers to pull hair into a high ponytail, and bobby-pin into a knot. Mist on quick dry 18 instant finishing spray and blow-dry for a few seconds to create a slightly disheveled finish.

Hair Trend 4: Instant Update. Glam hair accessories paired with modern styles.

From whimsical to traditional, this season’s hair accessories complemented countless looks. Try a simple black headband, a jaunty fedora or anything that adds a pop of color.

AS SEEN AT:
Balenciaga • Jean Paul Gaultier • Louis Vuitton • Luella • Marc by Marc Jacobs • Pollini • Ralph Lauren • SportMax

Marc by Marc Jacobs, Ralph Lauren, Jean Paul Gaultier.

How to get this an instant update hairstyle:

• Strike a balance between your hairstyle and your hair accessory. For example, pair a masculine fedora with romantic waves, as seen at Ralph Lauren. Mist on hot sets 22 thermal setting mist and curl sections with a large-barrel curling iron, focusing on your mid-lengths.

• Try the cool ponytail seen at Marc by Marc Jacobs: Mist fabricate 03 heat-active texturizer on damp hair and rough-dry. Use your fingers to pull hair into a high ponytail and mist on quick dry 18 instant finishing spray. Wrap a black band or ribbon around your head twice and secure at the nape.

• Get creative. At Jean Paul Gaultier, Guido slicked hair into a bun with hardwear 16 super strong gel, wrapped tights (in contrasting colors) around the head to create a cap, and secured it with bobby-pins. Take the look from runway to reality by snipping the waist and feet off a pair of tights and wrapping it around the head to create a thick band.
