These last few weeks of summer is all about looking good —whether you’re channeling poolside chic or beach beautiful. On Saturday, August 7, 2010, Lavetta Fajardo for Kim Vo Salon at the Mirage took summer beauty to a whole new level, creating this perfectly playful look for Tinsley Mortimer, who was celebrating her birthday at Tao Beach.

Tinsley Mortimer. Photo by: Tony Tran/Powers Imagery

How To Get Tinsley Mortimer’s hairstyle:

Lavetta created a playful french braided headband that’s easy to recreate at home — just start the braid at the crown and work across the head until you reach the top of the ear, leaving out the side pieces as you work along.

Then Lavetta added in a slight wave to Tinsley’s face framing layers using a large barrel iron, and finally, finishing with Kim Vo Perfect Polish Dry Serum to infuse shine and help keep frizz and flyaways at bay (ulta.com; $55).

Last week I got invited to New York City for the John Frieda Sheer Blonde Entourage kick off event.

The John Frieda Sheer Blonde is series of events and perks available for blondes (like myself, real or fake LOL). The blonde VIP program began on March 18th, 2010, in New York City at the Highline Ballroom with a private performance by Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter and blonde icon Natasha Bedingfield which I got to greet and meet! Natasha’s third album drops this spring FYI.

So I wake to this beautiful view of the Hudson river from my room at The Standard Hotel on Washington Street New York City.

I get to learn about John Frieda’s latest product launches. The John Frieda has just expanded their Root Awakening hair care line with 3 NEW products: John Frieda Root Awakening Strength Restoring Smoothing Lotion, John Frieda Root Awakening Strength Restoring Gel, and John Frieda Root Awakening Strength Restoring Hair Spray. $6.49 each. Available at food, drug and mass retailers nationwide from March 2010.

L to R: John Frieda Root Awakening Strength Restoring Smoothing Lotion, John Frieda Root Awakening Strength Restoring Gel, John Frieda Root Awakening Strength Restoring Hair Spray

Also NEW from John Frieda: Frizz-ease Smooth Start Shampoos and Conditioners. Comes in two versions:

Smooth Start Shampoo and Conditioner Repairing For Damaged Hair

Smooth Start Shampoo and Conditioner Hydrating For Extra Dry Hair

Before going to Natasha Bedginfield’s concert I had to look good right? My hair (which I always refer to as my half beauty) had to be flawless. I took a walk down Washington Street (825 Washington Street that is) to the Serge Normant at John Frieda salon. BTW if you are staying at The Standard Hotel which is also on the same street and in a desperate need to get you hair done, just walk few block to the John Frieda salon, it’s SO close!

I walked into the Serge Normant at John Frieda Salon on Washington Street NYC.

This is no joke guys, the John Frieda hair serum (such a classic) revolutionized me back in the early 90s. I’m serious here. Until that point I’ve never used or seen any hair care styling products to deal with my very frizzy super voluminous 80′s hair! Thank you John Frieda for saving me and making my hair look silky smooth and straight. I look much cooler now so I believe!

And yes..this is Marta’s hair before a John Frieda blow out:

I met a fabulous hairstylist named Yanni who now I call an artist and set down for my blow out. After washing my hair with John Frieda shampoo and conditioner Yanni preped my hair before blow drying by simply spraying Luxurious Volume Lavish Lift Root Booster from the John Frieda Collection to my roots. Then he took a small round brush and blow curled my hair into beautiful Hollywood waves. The look was very Victoria’s Secret models hairstyle, which is my favorite! The look: Parted in the middle and waves perfectly framing my face. Very Gisele Bundchen.

And this is Marta Walsh after the John Frieda blow out:

Playing photographer at The Standard Hotel in New York City. Hair by John Frieda of course. You can tell I’m totally feeling it and loving it!

I made it to the Natasha Bedingfield concert for the John Frieda Sheer Blonde Entourage kick off event. YAY.

The moment I was waiting for! I get to MEET Natasha Bedingfield! Natasha had an incredible voice live. I was mesmerized. Natasha was super sweet chatting with me asking where I was from. I did mention I used to live in Cheltenham England. “I love Cheltenham!” Natasha replied with a million dollar smile. And did you see Natasha’s beautiful blonde hair?

L TO R: The super fabulous Nadine Jolie of JolieNadine.com who I had an amazing time over dinner at STK, Natasha Bedingfield, Marta Walsh

And it was time to say good bye to my beautiful room with a view at The Standard Hotel and New York City. Back to Phoenix Arizona now! Sometimes my friends blonds maybe do have more fun!

GET THE LOOK: Love Julianne Moore’s winter proof, and I must add, gorgeous hairstyle at Sundance 2010?

Thanks to hairstylist Stephen Lewis, who worked on Julianne Moore for a “Smooth and Sleek Sundance Style”, Talking Makeup has the breakdown on how to get the look:

“Julianne wanted a simple but sophisticated look for her press in Sundance. I applied Leonor Greyl Serum de Soie Sublimateur to her wet hair and low-dried her hair with a large round brush. It made her hair shiny and polished without looking greasy, and it held really well in the wet, snowy eather. For a finishing touch, I applied a small amount of Leonor Greyl Eclat Naturel on her ends. She looked great!”

GET THE LOOK: Nominee Diane Kruger’s glamorous asymmetrical Jason Wu gown (which BTW Marta loves Diane’s dress! Best Dressed for sure!) was the inspiration for the soft, romantic side-chignon that celebrity stylist Mark Townsend created for the 2010 SAG awards.

“I started by taking a small amount of Moroccanoil Treatment and finger combed it through Diane’s dry hair” explained Townsend. “The original Moroccanoil is super light-weight and absorbs right in, to give the hair amazing shine without weighing it down.

“I then took 2 inch sections of hair and wrapped them around a 1 and 1/2 inch curling iron to create waves all over the head. Next, I took a small amount of Moroccanoil Hydrating Styling Cream in my palms and then raked my hands through the hair to break up the waves, eliminate any fly-aways, and give the hair a soft hold. Next, I gathered her hair behind her left ear and loosely braided it, gathering about an inch from the bottom, then looped the end of the braid back up and pinned it behind her left ear. I finished by giving the style hold with L’Oreal Elnett Extra Strong Hold Hairspray followed by a light misting of Moroccanoil Glimmer Shine Spray.

Moroccanoil products used to create Diane Kruger’s look:

Moroccanoil® Treatment. a proprietary argan oil-infused formula, is exclusively designed to give hair a natural-looking silky, lustrous shine and a frizz- and static-free finish. It strengthens, conditions and revitalizes hair while significantly reducing drying time by up to 40%. (MSRP:$39.00 / 3.4 fl. oz.)

Moroccanoil® Hydrating Styling Cream gives beautifully hydrating and natural-looking hold while eliminating frizz, and adding definition and shine. (MSRP: $30.00 / 10.2 fl. oz.)

Moroccanoil® Glimmer Shine Spray creates an instant mist of long-lasting, incomparable shine while protecting hair from the damaging effects of UV light and free radicals. (MSRP: $24.00 / 3.4 fl. oz.)

Moroccanoil is sold in fine salons and spas. For more information about Moroccanoil visit www.moroccanoil.com

GET THE LOOK: Penelope Cruz style and look at the 67th Golden Globe Awards was one of my favorite. I loved her super chic black Armani dress which had a mixture of stripes and lace. And I loved her hairdo and makeup.

Inspiration & The Look: Inspired by Penelope’s vintage Armani dress and her fresh from vacation tan, iconic hairstylist Oribe channeled classic Hollywood glamour for Penelope’s red carpet style. He created cascading, pinned back waves for a relaxed, elegant look.

Manicurist Deborah Lippmann polished off some of Hollywood’s hottest looks at the Golden Globes on Sunday. Penelope Cruz wore Night And Day to compliment her bronzed glowing skin.

Oribe used his Imperméable to shield Penelope’s hair from the day’s rain and humidity.

How To Get Penelope Cruz Hairdo at the 2010 Golden Globes:

1. Start by working Gel Serum through the hair and then use hot rollers or a curling iron to set the hair. Spray Imperméable or an anti-humidity spray on the hair before using the curling iron to help protect the style and prevent frizz.

2. Brush loose curls into place

3. Accentuate the wave in the front and make sure it is pronounced

4. Clip the hair in place and spray it with Superfine Hair Spray

5. To finish, use a bobby pin and pin the hair back on one side

Last week I had the pleasure to join a webcast from New York City hosted by the John Frieda experts: John Frieda, Harry Josh, Luigi Murenu.

John Frieda

It was amazing to finally see the man behind truly one of my favorite brands ever, John Frieda. I can’t never forget when one day after I moved to New York City from Israel back in 1991, my sister told me that I MUST get this hair serum! It was the beginning of a new era in my life. The era of straight sleek hair. And a goodbye to the mousse-full big hair. In other words, the John Frieda Frizz-Ease Hair Serum is one product that revolutionized my (beauty) life.

What sets the John Frieda brand from the rest is that it grew from John’s salon in London. Mr John Frieda himself was using these products in his salon and working with fashion magazines, such as : British Vogue. Mr Frieda also was one of the first of ‘celebrity hair stylists’. Back in the 1970′s it was a whole new concept. Most hairdressers were known for cut and blow dry and not ‘stylists’.

It seems to me that the John Frieda hair care line was created in the right place and right time. Styling products didn’t exist in the 1970′s all the way to the late 80′s. Most people simply used the mousse. Luckily the big hair was in therefore no one complained. What also interesting to find out is that frizzy hair was never mentioned or addressed. It is quite astonishing because frizzy hair or frizz prone hair is quite popular (I know I have it). So John Frieda created not only a unique product but also a product people want! Later on the John Frieda continued to create product with this prescriptive approach. Think: their hair care line for different hair colors (sheer blonde collection), and their latest the John Frieda luxurious Volume collection for thin limp hair. And, Root Awakening. The brand also collaborates with top hair stylists and professionals such as Harry Josh and Luigi Murenu to make sure they are on the cutting edge of fashion.

John Frieda insisted that it’s not enough to just have the right styling product, you need to have the right technique of application. For example, he talked about how to apply Frizz Ease Hair Serum.

1. Make sure your hair is saturated with water, and we mean, soaking wet. The product works best on wet hair to seal and transform the hair cuticle’s texture and stay flat, hence, no frizz.
2. Do not towel dry, comb, or shake your hair from side to side or up and down.
3. Take a dime size of product and emulsify in your hands
4. Gently press into hair. Distribution is a key.
5. Gently squeeze the hair when applying product.
6. Don’t over dry. Tip: if the hair feels cool when you touch after blow drying that means your hair is still wet. As soon as your begins to feel hot it means moisture has completely evaporated from your hair.
7. Good luck:)

It was truly inspiring listening to Mr John Frieda speak. He came across as a person who is extremely passionate about his brand.

Hair Trends by John Frieda experts:

Hair Trends according to John Frieda’s Luigi Murenu: waves, curls,& sleek are all IN, “pretty much nothing new” but he sees a “huge come back of the hair cut”. Think Rihanna and Katie Holmes.

Hair Trends according to John Frieda’s Harry Josh: “monochromatic & bold hair colors” less highlights and more single-process, which sounds so much better for your wallet:)

This weekend I’ve decided to let my hairdresser blow dry my hair because lately my hair is just not behaving! Do you all know the feeling? My hair just didn’t get straight and silky even after spending a whole precious hour in my very busy mom’s life. LOL. My hair finally looks fabulous and I can easily get used to this lifestyle. Till then I need to learn how to perfect my blow drying techniques and maybe try new hair products that work well with my hair. While at Sachi salon in Scottsdale I got obsessed with the L’Oréal Professionnel NEW Série Expert Liss Ultime collection. I want it! Once I try it I will share my thoughts. Meanwhile here is a little bit about the line.

L’Oréal Professionnel NEW Série Expert Liss Ultime: We all know how stressful dry, frizzy, unmanageable and rebellious hair can be. Beyond the obvious styling issues, factors such as genetics, the environment and climate, as well as day-to-day weather changes, are all to blame. L’Oréal Professionnel Série Expert has built upon the success and technology of Liss Extreme and re-launched the line as Série Expert Liss Ultime, a collection made especially to treat coarse hair and result in softer, more manageable tresses.

Frizzy hair is caused when the cuticle layer on the hair shaft becomes rough and stands straight up. Once humidity is factored in, the hair shaft absorbs the extra moisture in the air and expands, causing the cuticle layers to stand out even more. This exposed cuticle layer leaves the hair susceptible to further damage, whether from chemical and environmental aggressors, or even from simple brushing or styling. The end result is hair that feels coarse, lacks shine, and looks lifeless.

The Liss Ultime line infuses the latest technologies from L’Oréal Professionnel into their products. Oil Incell is a combination of nutritive oils (argan + olive) and Incell technology that provides internal nutrition to the hair fiber while smoothing the cuticle layer. Polymer AR is a double-action technology of nutritive oils (argan + olive) and a shielding polymer that maintains the nutrition of the hair fiber and provides humidity protection. Polytensium are ultra charged smoothing polymers that leave hair with lasting, defined smoothness and intense shine. Together, these technologies are designed to bring smoothness, nourishment and humidity protection to unruly and troubled hair.

The Liss Ultime at-home maintenance range includes the following products:

Liss Ultime Smoothing Shampoo: A luxurious, enriched shampoo that nourishes unmanageable and rebellious hair while providing lasting smoothness and frizz control. Oil Incell provides internal nutrition to the hair fiber while smoothing the cuticle. 8.45 fl. oz. – $21.00, 16.9 fl. oz. – $28.00

Liss Ultime Smoothing Masque: A richly textured masque that provides deep conditioning for unmanageable and rebellious hair. Polymer AR double-action technology (nutritive oils and a shielding polymer) maintains the nutrition of the hair fiber and provides protection from humidity. 6.7 fl. oz. – $30.00

Liss Ultime Smoothing Treatment (Leave-In): A leave-in treatment that provides conditioning care and discipline to hair, while protecting it from humidity and moisture. The combination of Polymer AR and Incell technology strengthen and nourish the hair fiber. 5.0 fl. oz. – $23.00

Liss Ultime Shine Perfecting Serum (Leave-In): A fluid serum that provides control, shine and suppleness for unmanageable hair in a single step. Using Reflexium, an ultra-light shine and control agent, Shine Perfecting Serum helps facilitate blow-drying, controlling rebellious strands to leave hair glossy and smooth. This great formula is the same as Liss Extrême Shine Perfecting Serum. 4.2 fl. oz. – $23.00

Liss Ultime Nuit (Leave-In Smoothing Night Treatment ): After a night’s rest, hair frequently appears unruly in the morning – especially unmanageable and frizzy hair. Liss Ultime Nuit is the perfect addition to one’s nighttime regimen. The smoothing night cream acts as a luxurious leave-in treatment to be applied at night, nourishing and taming hair while you sleep, when the body is in its natural reparative state. The night treatment is a non-greasy gel cream that nourishes and conditions the hair fiber overnight for improved manageability in the morning. Using Polymer AR and Incell™ technology, Liss Ultime Nuit penetrates deep into the cuticle to condition and enhance texture. Hair may be washed and styled as usual in the morning, or, for more intense benefits, just brush and style without rinsing. 4.2 fl. oz. – $35.00

EXCLUSIVE IN-SALON TREATMENT:

Power Define: High Definition Smoothing Treatment: For the launch of Liss Ultime, Série Expert created a new exclusive in-salon treatment that reinforces its expertise in backbar services. To manage unruly hair, Power Define treatment is applied to sectioned hair, fiber by fiber. Using Polytensium, an ultra-charged smoothing polymer, Power Define targets the cuticle and surface to provide instant, visible results that leave hair shiny and supple. Similar to other Série Expert Powerdoses, the benefits of Power Define can last up to 6 shampoos. (Suggested Salon Charge $15 – $20)

“It’s sharp, sleek, and super shiny,” hairstylist Luigi Murenu said. Murenu applied Kiehl’s Hair Gel to damp hair and then blow-dried it straight. He used a fine-tooth comb to make a deep side part and then slick it into a tight, low ponytail.

He flat ironed the tail and then smoothed over everything with John Frieda’s Frizz-Ease Thermal Protection Hair Serum. To finish off the ponytail, Murenu wrapped the base with S&M bondage tape.
