How to get the hairstyle: Hair Tutorial

1. Prep damp hair with Aveda Brilliant Damage Control to add shine and protect hair from the hazards of heat styling. Then massage Aveda Phomollient Styling Foam from roots to ends to add body. Blow-dry with a round brush, curling the ends of hair under as you dry.

2. Use a comb to create a messy part wherever hair parts naturally. For extra volume at the crown, backcomb the roots with a fine-toothed comb.

3. Divide hair into two side sections and one back section. Create a tight braid with the back section of hair and secure at the end with a clear elastic band.

4. Take the left section of hair and lace through the braid, securing at the bottom with a clear elastic band, on top of the elastic already holding the braid. Repeat with right section of hair. Front of the face and secure with bobby pins at each side of the braid, behind the ears. Secure other loose strands into the braid as needed.

5. Finish by spraying the braid liberally with Aveda Control Force Firm Hold Hair Spray to keep hair steadily in place.

Q: What was your inspiration for this look? How did you collaborate with the designer to create the look?

“Jason’s collection was inspired by the look of the dewy pixie girls who graced the covers of 1960’s fashion magazines. The updated braid we created for the show reflects that fresh and youthful feel.” —Jenn Chiminiello for Aveda.

Q: How could a woman achieve this look on her own?

“This style looks pretty and fresh for daytime and super romantic for evening. To keep the look from going flat, apply Aveda Phomollient Styling Foam to damp hair, massaging from roots to ends, and blow dry with a round brush. Then divide hair into two side sections and one back section. Create a tight braid with the back section of hair, securing with an elastic. Wrap pieces of hair from each side through the braid, securing with an elastic at the bottom of the braid. To keep the style in place, spray liberally with Aveda Control Force  Firm Hold Hair Spray.”

“Laura and I are committed to protecting the environment. Our greatest inspiration comes from the natural landscape that we grew up in, so we are proud to be partnering with a company like Aveda that promotes environmental awareness and responsibility.” —Kate Mulleavy of Rodarte

Q: What was your inspiration for this look? How did you collaborate with the designer to create the look?
“Kate, Laura, and I wanted to create a hair look with a dreamy, almost childlike feeling. From the front, the hair looks like it is left down, but in back, it is controlled, adorned with metal flowers that look like barrettes. There’s also a Mexican influence on the look, since the Rodarte collection this season is inspired by bordertowns. We wanted to reflect this inspiration with the vintage flower ornaments and shiny, side-parted hair.” –Odile Gilbert for Aveda

Q: How could a woman achieve this look on her own?
“This look is pretty and playful, especially for daytime. Prep damp hair with Aveda Smooth Infusion™ Glossing Straightener for sleekness and shine, blow dry smooth, and straighten with a flat iron. HOW TO GET THE LOOK: Products are all by Aveda.

1. Prep damp hair with Aveda Smooth Infusion Glossing Straightener for shine and sleekness, and blow-dry smooth with a flat brush. 

2. Create a clean left side part. Straighten hair layer by layer using a flat iron.

3. Create anchors for the flower pins by forming three small braids along the scalp: one along the left side of the occipital ridge, one across the center of the head, and one vertically along the left side part. Spray with Aveda Control Force Hair Spray for maximum hold.

4. Brush hair over the braids, keeping the left side part clean and strong. Spray each layer of hair with Aveda Control Force Hair Spray and blow-dry for intense hold and shine. Hair should be sleek and close to the head.

5. Use small bobby pins to secure hair in a clean line from one side of the occipital ridge to the other, just above the nape of the neck. Let the ends of hair fall loosely in back and over both shoulders.

6. Secure a selection of metal flower ornaments into the hair horizontally across the head, using the covered braids as anchors. Finish the look with Aveda Control Force Hair Spray.

“This season, we have been experimenting with organic cotton for some of our casual day wear pieces. We reduce our carbon footprint every season by producing in New York City. It feels great to be able to contribute to the idea of going green.” —Christian Siriano

Q: What was your inspiration for this look? How did you collaborate with the designer to create the look?
“Christian and I were inspired by Veronica Lake and 1960’s vintage Parisian glamour. The swept-up, wavy look echoes the romantic silhouettes and movement in this season’s collection.” — Antoinette Beenders for Aveda

Q: How could a woman achieve this look on her own?
“This look can be adapted for a very chic and glamorous evening. Prep hair by blow drying smooth and curling hair in one-inch pieces. Brush curls through, spraying with Aveda Air Control Hair Spray for light, workable hold. Pull hair back tightly and wind it into a twist, pinning it against the head with bobby pins. Finish the look by backcombing the front section of hair, brushing it through and twisting it back. Pin in place to create ultra-volume and a glamorous, retro effect.” — Antoinette Beenders for Aveda

HOW TO GET THE LOOK: Hair Tutorial

1. Prep hair with Aveda Air Control Hair Spray for light, workable hold.

2. Working from bottom to top, curl hair in one-inch pieces with a medium barrel curling iron. Loop each curled piece around your finger and pin against the head to set the curl. Allow curls to cool, and then remove clips. Gently brush hair out.

3. Separate a top section of hair—from the hairline to the crown—and pin it away to separate. Backcomb the remainder of hair and spray with Aveda Air Control Hair Spray to create ultra-volume. Brush backcombed hair through.

4. Gather the left side of hair and pull tightly to the back of the head. Pin in place vertically, up the center line of the head, with bobby pins. Smooth hair against the head with fingers and spray with Aveda Air Control Hair Spray to minimize flyaways.

5. Gather the right side of hair and pull tightly to the back of the head. Wrap hair inwards around your fingers to create a tornado-like twist. Pin in place and spray with Aveda Control Force Hair Spray for ultra-strong hold.

6. Remove pins from the remaining front section of hair and backcomb to create volume. Spray with Aveda Air Control Hair Spray. Comb hair away from the face and pin to the top of the twist, creating wave-like volume at the crown of the head. Set the look with Aveda Control Force Hair Spray.

GET THE LOOK: Frederic Fekkai Celebrity Stylist Renato Campora created a sexy undone chignon for Kate Winslet for the 67th Golden Globe Awards. The Look & Inspiration: Renato’s inspiration was a glamorous woman leaving her hotel room in a rush. He created a sexy, low chignon with an undone feel and lots of texture.

Here’s Renato’s hair tutorial on how to get Kate Winslet hairdo:

On wet hair Renato applied FEKKAI COIFF STRONG HOLD VOLUME MOUSSE mixed with FEKKAI ADVANCED BRILLIANT GLOSSING CREAM. These two products together provide the right balance to create a texture that leaves the hair hydrated. With the hair still wet, he created a side part and placed pins curls throughout the entire head and dried the hair with a diffuser. Once the hair was 80 percent dry, he removed the pin curls. Renato used his fingers to produce texture and finished drying the hair with the diffuser. He then applied FEKKAI Salon Technician Color Care Anti-Fade Top Coat throughout the hair for shine. Next, he softened the ends by using a curling iron. He then applied the FEKKAI Au Naturel Dry Shampoo all over the head to give the final look some modernity and volume.

After that, Renato formed the chignon, by pulling the hair down into a low pony tail; he wrapped the rubber band around once and created a loop with the hair when you take it through the pony tail the second time. Campora used long hair pins to secure the pieces to the side and played with the texture to make the chignon. He left loose pieces in the front to frame and soften the face. This allows the hair in the front to blend with the chignon in the back perfectly, so there is no contrast. Finally, he finished with FEKKAI Full Blown Volume Lifting Hairspray and dried with a diffuser to maintain the look.

GET THE LOOK: Frederic Fekkai Celebrity Stylist Adir Abergel Created a sophisticated style for presenter, Jennifer Garner. The Look: Adir sought to capture her essence and amazing spirit, he wanted to play up her beautiful dress by elongating Jennifer’s features. He did that by building height on the top of the head and creating cascading curls to fall down her back.

Here’s Adir’s hair tutorial on how to get Jennifer Garner’s hairdo:

He first started by applying the FEKKAI COIFF BOUFFANT LIFTING & TEXTURIZING SPRAY GEL all over the roots to create body and movement. He created extra volume using the FEKKAI COIFF STRONG HOLD VOLUME MOUSSE from the roots to the ends for memory and hold. He took a round brush and blow-dried the hair and while it was hot, placed it into stand up pin curls and let cool while she got her makeup done.

He then released all the pin curls and ran his fingers through her hair to loosen the curls and create an effortless feel. He then backcombed the roots for extra body and sprayed the roots with FEKKAI COIFF Sheer Hold Hairspray. To finish the look pulled the hair half up and secured each side with a bobby pin. Finally he sprayed FEKKAI ADVANCED BRILLIANT GLOSSING SHEER SHINE MIST for all night shine.

GET THE LOOK: Penelope Cruz style and look at the 67th Golden Globe Awards was one of my favorite. I loved her super chic black Armani dress which had a mixture of stripes and lace. And I loved her hairdo and makeup.

Inspiration & The Look: Inspired by Penelope’s vintage Armani dress and her fresh from vacation tan, iconic hairstylist Oribe channeled classic Hollywood glamour for Penelope’s red carpet style. He created cascading, pinned back waves for a relaxed, elegant look.

Manicurist Deborah Lippmann polished off some of Hollywood’s hottest looks at the Golden Globes on Sunday. Penelope Cruz wore Night And Day to compliment her bronzed glowing skin.

Oribe used his Imperméable to shield Penelope’s hair from the day’s rain and humidity.

How To Get Penelope Cruz Hairdo at the 2010 Golden Globes:

1. Start by working Gel Serum through the hair and then use hot rollers or a curling iron to set the hair. Spray Imperméable or an anti-humidity spray on the hair before using the curling iron to help protect the style and prevent frizz.

2. Brush loose curls into place

3. Accentuate the wave in the front and make sure it is pronounced

4. Clip the hair in place and spray it with Superfine Hair Spray

5. To finish, use a bobby pin and pin the hair back on one side

The cast of Sherlock Holmes traveled from Berlin to Madrid then to Paris for three star-studded international premieres for the global blockbuster. Sebastian stylist Thomas Dunkin, who also styled leading lady Rachel McAdams’ hair for the world premiere, created three different looks for the actress in these three different cities to complement her gorgeous gowns.

In Berlin, Thomas styled 40’s-inspired finger-waves for Rachel that bespoke elegance and grace.

Thomas shares the step-by-step on how to get Rachel McAdams’ hairdo at the Berlin Sherlock Holmes Premiere:

1) Begin by saturating damp hair from root to tip with Sebastian Professional Volupt Spray
2) Blow-dry hair with a medium-sized round brush and set whole head in medium-sized Velcro rollers
3) Leave the rollers in hair for about 5-10 minutes to cool down
4) Remove rollers beginning at the bottom, then use a ¼-inch curling iron to curl each section beginning at the root and eventually wrapping the entire section around the iron
5) Brush through hair with a Mason Pearson brush and use large section clips to define the waves where they naturally indent
6) Spray hair with Sebastian Professional Shaper Zero Gravity hair spray over the entire head and leave to set for another 10 minutes
7) Finish by removing the section clips and shaking head for an easy, sexy look

In Madrid, Thomas styled Rachel’s unstructured updo with vixen-like volume.

Here is how to get Rachel McAdams’ hairdo at the Sherlock Holmes Madrid premiere :

1) For hair-raising root volume, begin by saturating damp hair with Sebastian Professional Volupt Spray
2) Blow-dry hair with a small round brush and set the entire head in pin curls, let hair cool for about 5-10 minutes before removing pin curls
3) Pull a substantial amount of Sebastian Professional Molding Mud through hair to loosen up the sections, then spray Sebastian Professional Shaper Fierce all over for added texture
4) Manipulate hair with more Molding Mud and twist into an asymmetrical French pleat in the back
5) Use a large-barrel curling iron to add curl and wave to the top half of head for a dramatic, unstructured effect

Tippi Shorter

In 1995 Tippi headed from home town, Long Beach, California to New York City, and within a year of her move she was asked to participate in a beauty feature for Essence magazine. Tippi opened Luxe Studio in Soho, but sold the successful salon after four years to pursue other career opportunities such as styling for photo shoots, music videos and commercials. Tippi is known for taming the tresses of A-list actresses, musicians, and supermodels including Alicia Keys, Rihanna, Jennifer Hudson, Beyonce, Jada Pinkett-Smith, and Vanessa Williams, to name a few! And while her beauty masterpieces are seen on the covers and editorial pages of In Style and Vanity Fair, Tippi remains modest and humble saying “I am not a celebrity hairstylist. I am a hairstylist who happens to have the opportunity to work with many wonderful celebrities.”

Having been a spokesperson for Pantene and Clairol, Tippi is now working on her own hair extension line “Get Gorgeous Hair” and working hard as the newest addition to the Avon hair styling team.

In this interview Tippi talks to Marta Walsh about hair love for hair and gives expert hair styling tips. Find out what are some of this season’s hottest holiday hair trends, which hairstyles are out, and must-have beauty essentials and tools.

Marta Walsh: When did your interest in hair begin?
Tippi Shorter: My interest in hair started at a young age… my mom was an Avon Representative and always had beauty products in our house and also I was always the one to get my friends ready before school events. It wasn’t until 16 years ago that I had my big break in L.A. and my career has taken off from there.

MW: What are some of this season’s hottest holiday hair trends and how can we re-create these looks at home?
TS: This season’s style is all about simplicity… each style should take three steps or less. Some of my favorites are big sexy, volume or sleek ponies/buns:

Big, sexy volume:

- Begin this look by running Advance Techniques Volumizing Mousse by Avon through hair root to tip.
- Create soft curls by setting hair with Advance Techniques Pillow Curlers. Spray a light mist of Advance Techniques Hair Spray to ensure hair will hold curl.
- Remove the curlers from your hair. Flip hair over front of head and spray with additional hair spray to create extra volume and hold. Run fingers through hair to loosen curls for a soft finish.

Sleek ponies/bun:

- To create the perfect canvas for a defined part, start with clean, smooth hair.
- Apply Advance Techniques Dry End Serum to the ends of your hair and Advance Techniques Super Straight Smoothing Balm from root to tip. Using Advance Techniques Cushion Brush, blow dry hair straight.
- Use a comb to create a defined part on the side of the head. Pull all hair into a tight, sleek bun at the back of the neck to make the part really stand out. Spray a light mist of Advance Techniques Mirror Shine Spray to create a high-sheen finish.

MW: Which hairstyles are out?
TS: Styles that are too over-done… you’re style should look effortless and timeless!
