Hairstyle Trends. New York Fashion Week SS 2011. Aveda lead stylist Jenn Chiminiello created “wilted waves” using Aveda Pure Abundance Hair Potion and Aveda Air Control Hair Spray at the ORGANIC by John Patrick Spring/Summer 2011 Fashion Week presentation in New York.

The Hairstyle & Inspiration: “The undone, wavy look is sexy and unrestrained, inspired by a girl’s hair after she’s been in the water. It’s very soft and flowing with lots of texture to give it a natural messiness. It’s loose, second-day hair—like it was curled the day before and then left alone. Our collection this season is based around water. I love that the hair look evokes the salty, windblown feel of hair that’s dried after being in the ocean. The style definitely has some 1970’s, Charlie’s Angels inspiration but the finished look is completely fresh.”— John Patrick of ORGANIC by John Patrick

HOW TO GET THE HAIR LOOK:

1. Prep damp hair with Aveda Smooth Infusion Style-Prep Smoother for sleek smoothness and to prevent frizz. Use a fine-tooth comb to create a strong part of the left side of the head.

2. Scrunch Aveda Phomollient Styling Foam into damp hair and massage into roots for volume and shine. Blow hair dry with a large ceramic round brush, curling ends under.

3. Pin top section of hair up with a large clip so sides are free for curling. Use a large-barrel curling iron on one-inch sections of hair at a time, working from the bottom up.

4. Remove pin from top section and curl as done on the sides.

5. Sprinkle Aveda Pure Abundance Hair Potion from roots to ends and rake hands through hair to create texture and loose roughness to waves.

6. Finish with a mist of Aveda Air Control Hair Spray for light hold and pull ends forward to rest on shoulders.

Q: What was your inspiration for this look? How did you collaborate with the designer to create the look?

“John Patrick explained his drive and focus while creating this collection. He was inspired by water, movement, fluidity, and flow. I wanted to take the hair in a similar direction: long, wavy, and natural, with a bit of texture and looseness.” — Jenn Chiminiello for Aveda

Q: How could a woman achieve this look on her own?

“This loose, natural look is easy to recreate and works for both day and evening. Prep damp hair with Aveda Smooth Infusion™ Style-Prep Smoother™ to prevent flyaways and Aveda Phomollient™ Styling Foam for volume and texture. Create a strong side part and blow hair dry with a round brush for extra volume and shine. Use a one-inch curling iron to create waves, working in sections from bottom to top. To make the style look natural, sprinkle with Aveda Pure Abundance™ Hair Potion and rake hands through hair to loosen waves. Finish with a light mist of Aveda Air Control™ Hair Spray.” — Jenn Chiminiello for Aveda

The Makeup

Janell Geason, Global Educator for Aveda Makeup, created a naturally luminous look using Aveda Petal Essence Eye Color Trio in Gobi Sands, Aveda Nourish-Mint Sheer Mineral Lip Color in Sheer Roseleaf, and Aveda Inner Light Mineral Tinted Moisture SPF 15 at the ORGANIC by John Patrick Spring/Summer 2011 Fashion Week presentation in New York.

HOW TO GET THE MAKEUP LOOK:

Complexion:

1. Prep skin with Aveda Enbrightenment Brightening Correcting Creme for luminosity.

2. Using the Aveda Inner Light Foundation Brush, apply Aveda Inner Light Mineral Tinted Moisture SPF 15 and Aveda Inner Light Concealer to even skin tone. Create a semi-matte finish with Inner Light Mineral Loose Powder in Translucent.

3. Use the Aveda Inner Light Foundation Brush to apply a small amount of Aveda Inner Light Mineral Dual Foundation to the contours of cheeks, choosing a foundation two shades deeper than natural skin tone.

Eyes:

1. Prep eyelids with Aveda Inner Light Mineral Tinted Moisture SPF 15. Highlight the center of the lid with the Aveda Petal Essence Eye Color Trio in Copper Haze—using the middle (contour) color of the palette to create a taupe-y, smoky look.

2. Define the contour of the eye with Aveda Petal Essence Eye Color Trio in Gobi Sands, using the middle color of the palette.

3. Swipe the center shade of the Gobi Sands Eye Color Trio from the inside corners of each eyelid to the outside corners, on both top and bottom lash lines.

4. Define the eyes with the Aveda Petal Essence Eye Definer in Cacao on the top and bottom lash lines. Smudge color and encircle the eyes with Aveda Flax Sticks Eye Smudger Brush (#5).

5. Brush eyebrows into place and softly define them with the Aveda Flax Sticks Brow & Lash Brush (#7). Define brows with the Gobi Sands Eye Color Trio.

6. Curl lashes and apply two coats of Aveda Mosscara in Black Forest to top and bottom.

7. For a wet finished look, use finger to dab a drop of Aveda All-Sensitive Body Formula on both tops and bottoms of the eyelid.

Lips:

1. Prime lips with Aveda Nourish-Mint Renewing Lip Treatment. Apply Aveda Nourish-Mint Sheer Mineral Lip Color in Sheer Roseleaf and press into lips with a sponge to intensify natural color.

2. Apply a small amount of Aveda Nourish-Mint Rehydrating Lip Glaze in Raspberry Tea to the pout of the lips to create a more worn-in, hours-later look.

INTERVIEW WITH JANELL GEASON, GLOBAL EDUCATOR, AVEDA MAKEUP:

Q: What was your inspiration for this look?

“John Patrick spoke about water as a theme. We decided that the hair was going to look loose and wavy, and be done, but not too done. I wanted the makeup to look effortlessly chic, like a girl spent the day at the beach and was going out. It’s a soft, daytime look with lots of glow and sheen. The skin is luminous and eyes feature natural, taupe-y browns. I chose sophisticated, organic shades to enhance the healthy, natural colors found in the skin, especially during the summer. The shades of taupe are 1970’s influenced and give off a brown smokiness. The makeup look needed to have lightness in both attitude and application for a soft, sultry, smooth feel. It’s polished but doesn’t look like the girl tried too hard.” — Janell Geason for Aveda

Q: How did you collaborate with the designer to create the look?

“John Patrick and I spoke about the elements of his collection, the woman who wears his clothes, and how his clothes tell us something about her. He has a keen sense of this woman, she is very chic and modern, but has a classic, nostalgic warmth to her. I chose colors and textures that this woman would wear as an accessory.” — Janell Geason for Aveda

Q: How could a woman achieve this look on her own?

“This look is very attainable and wearable. Use the Aveda Petal Essence™ Eye Color Trio in ‘Twilight’ to bring out the natural shape of the eye and enhance skin tone. Cheeks should be lightly flushed with the Aveda Inner Light™ Mineral Dual Foundation in a shade that’s two levels darker than the natural skin tone. To keep the look sophisticated, make sure that skin is polished with a semi-matte finish using the Aveda Inner Light™ Tinted Moisture SPF 15 and the Aveda Inner Light™ Mineral Loose Powder. Stain lips with the Aveda Nourish-Mint™ Smoothing Lip Color in ‘Sheer Roseleaf’ and a small amount of Aveda Nourish-Mint™ Rehydrating Lip Glaze in ‘Raspberry Tea’ on the pout.” — Janell Geason for Aveda

INTERVIEW WITH JOHN PATRICK OF ORGANIC BY JOHN PATRICK:

Q: What is the inspiration for your collection? What is the look you are capturing?

“The inspiration for my collection this season is water. Every manifestation of water—from floods to falls to lack thereof. I want to inspire a reverence for water, a resource that affects us constantly, everyday. This collection reflects the evolution of the 21st Century silhouette: modernity, function, and beauty.” — John Patrick of ORGANIC by John Patrick

Q: You work hard to reduce the environmental impact of your presentation each season with Aveda’s Green Backstage program by replacing bottled water with NYC tap water, eliminating the use of fur, serving organic/locally sourced food, and printing invitations on recycled paper. What does your accomplishment mean to you? How do you feel about the end results?

“I feel a sense of needing to do more to protect the environment. It’s incredibly important to tread lightly on the Earth, and there’s always room for improvement. We are thrilled to be working with Aveda, both for their passion for hair and for sustainability. In fact, Aveda CatWalks for Water inspired us to focus this season’s collection around the significance of water.” — John Patrick of ORGANIC by John Patrick

Spring/Summer 2010 Hair Trends by Guido for Redken

NEW ROMANCE

“This season we’re seeing so many different directions in terms of hair trends, but one thing that stands out is the idea of ‘urban romance.’ It’s not romantic hair in the usual sense, not down and free-flowing—it’s more for the city woman. Shapes have an edge, and it’s worn up in a ponytail or a knot.”

FRESH TEXTURES

“We can never say never in hair. We have to look at everything with new eyes, and take elements from all genres and eras. We can create every texture from natural to dramatic.”

SHOWCASE STYLE

“Some of the runway hairstyles we saw this season were very extreme, couture styles—they’re not necessarily looks you’d wear on the street. These looks are fantasies, and they make for a great show. Salons can reinvent and reinterpret them for their clients.”—Guido, Redken Creative Consultant

URBAN ROMANCE: Up or down, the new romantic looks have a more defined shape, with a grittier, slightly disheveled feel.
AS SEEN AT: Alexander Wang • Bottega Veneta • Chloé • Miu Miu • Moschino • Nina Ricci • PHI • Philosophy by Alberta Ferretti • Prada • Sonia Rykiel • Versace

TiPS:

• The tousled braid seen at Alexander Wang goes perfectly with the designer’s modern take on American sportswear. To create it, apply full frame 07 protective volumizing mousse, rough dry and swoop hair over one eye. Braid hair, letting the braid fall over your shoulder, and pull out pieces to soften the look.

• Pigtails—a schoolgirl staple—got a grown-up update at Prada. To get the look, apply blown away 09 protective blow- dry lotion and blow-dry. Backcomb hair at the crown, create a low side-part, and pull hair into pigtails. Tousle with your fingers for a disheveled finish.

• At Moschino and Bottega Veneta, ladylike accessories like hats and headbands contrasted perfectly with tousled locks. Apply thickening lotion 06 body builder to damp hair and air-dry to bring out natural texture, pull hair into a low ponytail or knot, then add your accessory.

PAST PERFECT: Iconic styles of the past get a fresh interpretation, courtesy of modern products, unexpected textures and creative interpretation.
AS SEEN AT: Jean Paul Gaultier • Lanvin • Luella • Marc by Marc Jacobs • Miu Miu • Nina Ricci • Philosophy by Alberta Ferretti • Versace

TiPS:

• The Bardot-esque updo seen at Lanvin was a playful reimagining of the classic topknot. Start by creating a high ponytail, then backcomb the tail to add texture. Twirl it into a wide knot and secure with bobby-pins. Mist hair with quick dry 18 instant finishing spray, then layer on vinyl glam 02 mega shine spray to add polish.

• Bows are usually demure, but the larger-than-life versions seen at Marc by Marc Jacobs were cheerfully cheeky. To create this 50s/80s mash-up, hair was blow-dried with aerate 08 bodifying cream-mousse, backcombed and gathered into a French twist. A mist of workforce 09 flexible volumizing spray helped to keep the style in place.

• To create the 70s-inspired waves seen at Versace, start by shampooing and conditioning with All Soft. Blow-dry hair smooth, then curl with a medium-size curling iron to create soft bend. Finger-comb, then apply a small amount of rewind 06 pliable styling paste to add soft separation.

SLICK MOVE: Whether slicked back or sleeked down, wet-look styles lit up runways with polished shine.
AS SEEN AT: Alberta Ferretti • Calvin Klein • Jonathan Saunders • Loewe • Marc Jacobs • Roberto Cavalli

TiPS:

• The classic ballet bun was reinterpreted at Marc Jacobs, where models sported super-sleek topknots. To get the look, apply blown away 09 protective blow-dry gel and blow-dry hair smooth. Apply glass 01 smoothing serum, pull into a high ponytail at the very top of the head, twist into place and bobby-pin.

• Wet-look hair worked perfectly with the menswear-inspired styles seen at Roberto Cavalli. Hair was misted with water, sprayed with hot sets 22 thermal setting mist, and sculpted into a wave over the right eye. The remaining hair was plaited into a low braid and misted with forceful 23 super strength finishing spray.

• It’s fitting that leatherwear house Loewe showed sleek, leather-look ponytails on the runway. Guido brushed in hardwear 16 super strong gel, gathered hair in a ponytail, then flat-ironed sections to create a slick finish. For best results with your flat iron, mist on iron silk 07 ultra straightening spray to smooth and protect hair.

EXTREME MEASURES: Impractical? Maybe—but these over-the-top looks offer plenty of inspiration to liven up your hairstyle.
AS SEEN AT: Jean Paul Gaultier • Louis Vuitton • Alexander McQueen

TiPS:

• The attention-demanding wigs at Louis Vuitton captivated the crowd. To give any style dramatic volume and texture, start with Extreme Shampoo and Conditioner to help strengthen hair. Apply guts 10 volume spray foam from roots to ends, then blow-dry. Mist on spray starch 15 versatile ironing spray, curl hair, then backcomb to create uninhibited texture.

• Alien-inspired hair in real life? Of course not. But on the runways—why not? The fin-shaped style seen at Alexander McQueen may be out-of-this-world, but anyone can achieve equally strong control with forceful 23 super strength finishing spray.

• Crimped, braided or corn-rowed, the side-ponytail is a quintessentially 80s look. Play up your ponytail’s texture by misting on fabricate 03 heat-active texturizer and blasting with your blow dryer.

Hair Trend report 2010 with Advanced Techniques Salon Professional Haircare. Avon Global Stylists Advisors worked backstage at Charlotte Ronson’s Fashion Show, where they interpreted the clothing designs to create a simple, girly style that any woman could wear. With just a few Advance Techniques products, the team teaches us how to transform bland hair to beautiful styles.

The hairstyle: Bohemian Ballerina. “Create a fresh, young wispy look to amp up simple designs in your wardrobe this season.”-Tippi Shorter

Hair Tutorial

1 . Prep wet hair from root to tip with Volumizing Mousse to enhance the natural shine and create volume. Using the Cushion Brush, blow dry hair section by section to distribute the product and create natural texture.

2. Gather the hair tight to form a ponytail at the back crown of the head and secure with a ponytail holder, keeping all sides flat. Holding hair at the end of the ponytail, twist the hair firmly in one direction to form a knot into a spiral. Secure with bobby pins.

3. On the sides, “muse” the little wispy hairs to play up the natural texture. Lightly spray with Hair Spray to complete the style and hold in place.

Accessorize with a Part

“Don’t clutter your style with headbands and accessories, make a statement with a clean, defined part.”-Anthony Barrow

1. To create the perfect canvas for a defined part, start with clean, smooth hair by applying Dry Ends Serum (Marta’s all time favorite) to the ends f your hair and Super straight Smoothing Balm from root to tip.

2. Using the Large Barrel Brush, blow fry hair straight. Use a comb to create a defined part on the side of the head.

3. Pull all hair into a tight, sleek bun at the back of the neck to make the part really stand out. Spray a light mist of Mirror Shine Spray to create a highly sheen finish.

Wavy Volume

“Pump up the volume of your soft, romantic tresses with edgy, high-fashion style.”-Allen Ruiz

1. Begin this look by smoothing Volumizing Mousse through damp hair root to tip.

2. Create soft curls by setting hair with Pillow Curlers. Spray a light mist of Hair Spray to ensure hair will hold curl.

3. Remove the curlers. Flip hair over front of head and a layer of Hair Spray to create extra volume and hold. Run fingers through hair to loosen curls for a soft finish.

Sleek and Sophisticated

“Take your style from shabby to chic with this sophisticated twist on the classy pony.”-Tippi Shorter

1. Prep damp hair with Moisture Sleek Smoothing Serum. Dry hair using the Vent Brush to enhance shine and create a smooth finish.

2. Apply a small amount of Shaping Gel to dry hair from root to mid-shaft. Pull all hair to the back of the head, securing with an elastic band.

3. Take a small bunch of hair and twist around the base of the pony, securing with bobby pins. Finish the look with a light mist of Hair Spray to keep all strands in place.

Crown of Volume

“Straight, sleek hair has taken a back seat to texture, wave & movement. The look this season is in your-face attitude and edgy rock & roll texture.”-Anthony Barrow

1. Smooth an Anti-Frizz Capsule on damp hair to create the perfect foundation for building frizz-free texture. Layer Volumizing Mousse on hair to give your tresses the extra boost they need.

2. Blow dry hair in small sections with a Round Brush. Wrap hair tightly around the barrel and aim hot air directly on the hair until dry.

3. Once all hair is dry, backcomb the top section and pull back to the center of the head, securing in place with bobby pins. Take the remaining hair and secure in a loose, messy bun at the nape of the neck. Finish the look with a light mist of Hair Spray.

New York Fashion Week. Max Azria Fall Winter Collection. Hair by Bob Recine for Moroccanoil. The Fashion: For Fall/Winter 2010, Max Azria embarks on a minimalist journey of clean lines and artful tailoring. Dusty mineral tones soften a base of stark black, giving the palette an air of cool sophistication. Disassembled shapes are pieced together, creating textured surfaces in crepe, leather, mesh and satin. A paired down silhouette outlines this season’s vision of streamlined abstraction.

The Hairstyle: Bob Recine for Moroccanoil created a sophisticated flawlessly finished high-ponytail to complement the minimal vision of the 2010 Max Azria collection. “Smooth, well-conditioned, hair with beautiful shine is the essence of this streamlined look,” said Recine. He used argan oil-based Moroccanoil Luminous Hair Spray to create a structure based on flexible, free-moving hold, and finished with Moroccanoil Glimmer Shine Spray to add an invisible veil of radiant, natural-looking frizz-free shine.

How to get the hairstyle:

Recine first separated the hair into 3 large sections and sprayed Moroccanoil Luminous Hair Spray directly on dry hair. He then blow-dried hair, brushing it smooth, then swept the hair into a high ponytail and tied it with an invisible hair band. For a polished finish, Recine used Moroccanoil Glimmer Shine Spray, applying a small amount on the palms of his hands, and evenly distributed it on the head and ponytail.

Oscars 2010 Hair Trends: Big Hair like Cameron Diaz. Get the look with full thickening cream by Living Proof.

The star turnout on the red carpet was big, and the hair was even bigger at the 82nd Annual Academy Awards show Sunday night. Romantic, natural tresses with lots texture and movement are speaking volumes this awards season. Living Proof celebrity stylist, Ward Stegerhoek, gives tips on how to use full thickening cream, and get the look at home. Full, the new breakthrough technology product that gives body and movement helps to create large, loose waves that will enhance any modern-chic style with a sexy, carefree, look.

Hairstyle Tips: How to get the big hair look

Step 1: When using full thickening cream, start with clean, damp hair. Squeeze a nickel-sized amount of full onto your fingertip. Once you dispense the correct amount, rub full between your hands. Ward Stegerhoek reminds us that full is designed to provide thickness, not lift. So if you want to use a root lifter, apply that first.

Step 2: Spread full through your hair evenly, starting just beyond the roots and working down the hair shaft to the ends. Then, use your fingers or a wide tooth comb to make sure it’s evenly distributed throughout your hair.

Step 3: Ward recommends using a large round brush and a blow dryer to create a really full style. Starting at the roots, Ward winds the round brush through the hair one section at a time, aiming the blow dryer under the brush to lift the hair as it dries. Ward suggests always keeping gentle tension with the brush, as you’re rolling to create thickness as you go.

Tip: Ward says finding the right amount can take some experimentation. If you don’t feel the thickening effects, increase the amount of full you’re using, but only a dime-sized amount at a time, to reduce the risk of using too much full and leaving hair feeling greasy.

Living Proof full : 3.7 oz. for $24	at www.livingproof.com

The messy up do was a trend on the Academy Awards 2010 red carpet. Celebs including Faith Hill, Jennifer Lopez, Sarah Jessica Parker, Rachel McAdams, Miley Cyrus, Penelope Cruz, Zoe Saldana and Kristen Stewart all embraced this look.

To get the look at home, celebrity stylist Oscar Blandi (who created Faith Hill’s Oscars 2010 hairstyle and has worked with Penelope Cruz and Jennifer Lopez) suggests following these steps:

Oscar Blandi

Step 1: To create this look, the base is critical. Let 70% of the hair air dry and apply Oscar Blandi Volumizing Spray ($18, available at Sephora.com) from roots to end. Flip the hair upside-down and blow-dry on low mild heat.

Step 2: Secure all the hair at the nape of the neck with an elastic, using your fingers as a comb to separate the hair for a natural pulled back effect. Wrap individual hair sections around the ponytail and secure with hair pins for a undone chignon.

Step 3: Lightly pull out hair around the hairline to create a tussled loose frame around the face.

Step 4: Finish with Oscar Blandi Lacca Hairspray ($23, available at Sephora.com) for shine and a flexible hold.

It was a mod, mod world backstage at Fall 2010 Fashion Week. From Erin Fetherston to Cynthia Steffe, the look for hair was all about thick, blunt-cut bangs that harkened back to the mod squad models of the late 1960′s and early 1970′s. Here, some of our favorite versions of the look. Consider yourself warned: The bang is back and it’s bigger (and blunter) than ever.

At Cynthia Steffe, Bumble and bumble lead stylist Rolando Beauchamp gave models a clip-on faux bang to help embody the late 1960′s cool British/French girl inspiration. “We’re doing a really thick fringe, but the texture on the hair is dirty, like two-day old hair,” he said. The slept in texture added to the cool girl feel, giving models a messy-sexy hairstyle that was retro without being too literal.

New York Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2010 Report: Avon for Mackage.

Avon’s Global Stylist Advisor Tippi Shorter created the hair look for the Mackage fall 2010 runway show, supported by a full team of Avon stylists. Tippi also creates dashing ‘dos for stars like Alicia Keys and Mary J. Blige.

Hair Tutorial: Here’s how to achieve this runway “Second Day Chic” hairstyle as called by Avon at-home!

Apply Advanced Techniques Volumizing Mousse by Avon to hair that has been dried straight, evenly distributing create a sturdy base for the style. Use a comb to create a deep diagonal part that extends from the hairline just above outside corner of one eye to crown.

Using a round barrel brush and blow dryer, create a defined part by blowing the front section forward to create a dramatic sweep across one eye. Just below the crown, backcomb a 2-3″ section of hair and drape over the back of the head to distribute the teased pieces. Gather the bottom section of hair (below the diagonal part) and tie off into a low ponytail using a clear elastic band. Mix Advanced Techniques Moisture Sleek Smoothing Serum and Shaping Gel and apply by hand to the front section of hair enhancing the drape across the front of the face. Gather the draped section of hair and pull into the loose low pony, securing with bobby pins. Finish with Advance Techniques Mirror Shine Spray by Avon for a high shine finish.
