Inspiration: The swooping stacked cut lines of artist Noriko Ambe. The organic splendor of artist Tara Donovan. Citing these two biomorphic artists as his springboard for the season, J. Mendel designer Gilles Mendel cultivates a collection seeded in elegant technicality and fluid emotion. “It’s the idea of using structured fabrics and adding an element of softness by using curved seams and intricate cut work,” says Mendel. “Each piece is an emotion.”

Hair: To mirror this dance between tailored precision and soft, sloping curves, and to evoke a feeling of ethereal airiness, stylist Odile Gilbert fashions a voluminous hairstyle that revels in the organic, chaotic nature of mussed curls. “It’s all about volume — tons of volume — and a round, fluid shape. This look is very feminine.” says Gilbert, adding “It’s not feminine-frilly; rather it’s femininity with a modern twist.”

How To Get The Look:

* First, take one to two-inch sections, and mist on new Moroccanoil Luminous Hair Spray (previewed at Fashion Week and available in December, 2009) to increase holding power, enhance the coil of each curl and provide protection against heat-styling.

* Apply Moroccanoil Intense Curl Cream and curl each section from roots to ends using a 1/2″ curling iron. Gently release the barrel and allow each curl to fall like a spiral.

* After curls cool, run Moroccanoil Intense Curl Cream through the curls as you gently separate them with your fingers. (Tip: When used as a finishing product, Moroccanoil Intense Curl Cream not only adds a sensual definition without crispiness, it also gives silky shine and soft hold while eliminating unwanted frizz.

* Flip head upside-down, fluff the curls, and spray with Moroccanoil Luminous Hair Spray for lasting, touchable hold.

* Finally, arrange curls to ensure the perfect amount of airy texture, and finish with another mist of Moroccanoil Luminous Hair Spray to seal in the style while increasing hair’s shine.

The Products:

is an argan-oil infused leave-in styling cream for beautiful, bouncy, naturally-shiny curls. Repeated use provides extraordinary shine, hold and protection. (MSRP: $30.00 / 10.2 fl. oz.)

New Moroccanoil Luminous Hair Spray is being previewed backstage during Spring 2010 Fashion Week and will be available in December 2009. It contains Moroccanoil®’s renowned proprietary argan oil infused formula and fragrance, provides natural looking hold, brushable memory, and enhances the condition of hair.

Moroccanoil® is sold exclusively in salons. www.moroccanoil.com .

Thanks to ghd, Talking Makeup is excited to give you a sneak peek to Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Swim 2010!

MARA HOFFMAN: Hair lead: Omar Lopez for ghd

“The Modern Hippie”

The Look: For her Resort 2010 Swim collection, Mara Hoffman drew inspiration from a spiritual exploration in the desert, which translated into a variety of unique silhouettes and colorful psychedelic prints, ranging from bold and bright to softer and more feminine

The ghd Way: Clean, bouncy waves for a modern take on the classic hippie coif. Lopez prepped the hair with ghd creation spray to protect models’ hair and provide a flexible hold for styling. He used a variation of ghd’s summer wave technique to create the clean, textured waves which was done by placing the ghd IV styler near the roots of hair and turning it 180 degrees upward and away from the scalp.

The ghd IV styler was slowing pulled down until it reached the midpoint between the roots and the ends, then flipped 180 degrees the opposite way and pulled all the way through the remaining half. Once the waves were created, Lopez misted ghd sea spray throughout to give the look definition and its overall beachy, matte texture.

WHITE SANDS AUSTRALIA: Hair lead: Andy Bodine for ghd

“The Ethereal Goddess”

The Look: Celestial glamour reigned supreme with frilly bandeau bikinis in a heavenly mix of sweet gelato colors.

The ghd Way: Beautiful cascading curls polished to perfection. Bodine began the look by spraying ghd thermal protector all over to prepare hair for heat styling. Using the ghd IV mini styler, Bodine created the classic ghd ribbon curl throughout the hair. Once the curl was made, a light mist of ghd ultimate hairspray helped set the look.

Finally, just before the girls stepped out onto the runway, Bodine gently finger combed some of the curls to create a little extra volume and give the look a slightly tousled effect.

XTRA LIFE LYCRA: Hair lead: Omar Lopez for ghd

“Sleek and Timelessly Chic”

The Look: Lycra took guests through the decades with archival garments from 1960-1990. The 2010 designer collections featured a variety of timeless styles inspired by elements of nature.

The ghd Way: Lopez created a classic, sophisticated sleek look that complemented both archival and present designs.

Hair was prepped with ghd creation spray to help create a base for heat styling. Using the ghd IV styler, Lopez straightened hair, running the iron through small pieces at a time to limit the amount of volume created and ensure a pin straight result.

Once all hair was straightened, Lopez brushed all the hair straight back to prevent any parts from being created, then sprayed ghd ultimate hairspray at the roots until hair was slightly damp. Lopez alternated between spraying hairspray and brushing hair back until the roots were left looking slick and wet while the ends were left completely dry. The result was a timelessly chic and sleek style that would easily complement all fashions from past, present and future collections.

CIA.MARÍTIMA: Hair lead: Craig Carter for ghd

“Classic Grace & Grandeur”

The Look: Beautiful sea shades from blue to green inspire the color palate for Cia.Marítima’s 2010 collection which featured turquoise, emerald and royal blue while incorporating neutral shades such as coral, brown, white and black.

The ghd Way: Carter created a twist on a classic look that resulted in an anything-but-basic pony.

First Carter prepped the hair with ghd thermal protector, dampening each section to protect the hair from heat styling while retaining its moisture. This created the perfect base for the ultra sleek style.

Using the ghd IV styler, Carter ironed the hair completely straight (the ghd IV mini styler was used for the areas closer to the hairline), then brushed it into a high pony that rested between the occipital and the crown of the head. The pony was secured with an elastic tie and wrapped with a braided gold cord around the base.

Finally to tame any flyaways, Carter used ghd ultimate hairspray around the hairline and a couple drops of ghd polishing serum throughout the pony for a clean, sleek finish.

ghd’s revolutionary styling irons and thermal protecting hair beauty range are available at great salons across the globe and in Sephora, as well as online at www.ghdhair.com and www.sephora.com .

Here are some tips about heat styling by GUIDO Redken’s Creative Consultant:

There are so many different sized curling irons-how do I know which one to choose?
It depends on two things. First, you need to decide what size curl you want to create. Second, you have to account for the fact that the curl will loosen throughout the day-you should choose a barrel that’s slightly smaller than the size of the curl you want. For loose waves, I find 1-inch curling iron works best. At first the curls might appear a bit too tight, but they’ll loosen up perfectly.

How can I prevent flat-ironed hair from looking lifeless?
Apply a heat protectant product like iron silk 07 ultra straightening spray to each section before you flat-iron. Hair that’s continually exposed to heat without any protection will end up looking dull, damaged and lifeless. The other trick is to kick the ends out. Just turn your wrist slightly as you’re bringing the iron down to the end of the section. It gives you movement and texture, so hair doesn’t look so severe.

How do you prepare hair for heat styling?
For a blow-dry, apply a heat protectant cream or gel, like blown away 09 protective blow-dry gel, to damp hair and comb it through so it’s thoroughly distributed. You want to make sure that your mid-lengths and ends, which are the most prone to damage, are evenly coated. For curling or flat-ironing, mist a heat protectant spray like iron silk 07 ultra straightening spray or spray starch 15 versatile ironing spray on each section (hair should be dry) before you use your hot tool.

What’s the right way to use hot rollers?
If you want to add volume and wave, lift your section up, place the roller underneath and roll down toward your scalp. For waves with minimal volume, don’t lift the section- just place the roller on top and roll up.

What are the biggest mistakes women make when using hot tools, and how can
you fix them?
Sometimes people think they don’t need to prep hair with a heat-protectant product, but it’s really an essential step. The product helps to keep your hair healthy and lock in shape. Another thing I notice is that people will curl or flat-iron their hair without making sure the section is combed neatly. If your section is messy, you won’t have a good result.
