Get a sneak peek to Hayden Panettiere’s makeup look at 2009 “I Love You, Beth Cooper” Screening!

Hayden Panettiere’s makeup is all by NEUTROGENA.

Makeup Artist Amy Oresman collaborated with NEUTROGENA brand ambassador Hayden Panettiere to create the starlet’s look for the New York City premiere of “I Love You, Beth Cooper”, and now shares how you can achieve this gorgeous look on your own:

Inspiration: Hayden’s look was inspired by old Hollywood glamour – with a new young twist. This is one of my favorite makeup looks for a starlet. It’s sexy and subtle.

Eyes: I wanted to create a subtle smoky eye that wouldn’t fight with the bright juicy lip we were planning on using on Hayden. To create this look I started by using NEUTROGENA Nourishing Eye Quad in Blue Smoke, this created a subtle smoke to the eye by using graphites and blues, which are not as harsh as black. I then framed the eye with NEUTROGENA Nourishing Eyeliner in Cosmic Black, which has a slight glossy sheen creating just a hint of drama around the perimeter of the eye. I topped the look off with NEUTROGENA Healthy Volume Black Mascara. This look is all about lashes and lips. This mascara is perfect for the three coats of mascara used to create ultra volume.

Face: I used NEUTROGENA Sun Fresh Sunless Lotion to blend Hayden’s tan lines in her one-shouldered red-carpet frock. I evened out Hayden’s glow with NEUTROGENA Healthy Skin Blends Natural Radiant Bronzer.

Lips: The highlight of this look was the lip. With those lips we could really go for it… and we did! I chose NEUTROGENA MoistureShine lipstick in Poppy Red. This lipstick is the perfect combination of fuchsia and red and because Hayden’s dress was all white, we really wanted a vibrant splash of color on the lip.

I’ve recently interviewed the man behind Skindinavia, Allen Goldman.

In this interview Allen Goldman talks to me about the creation of Skindinavia, also known as “The Original Makeup Saver”, and what makes it an essential beauty product in every girl’s makeup bag. His philosophy about beauty. New Skindinavia product in the making for 2010: a simple mist that gives your makeup a sun kissed glow all winter! And his love for travel.

Allen Goldman

Marta Walsh: When did your passion for the beauty industry begin?
Allen Goldman: My passion for science has been around since I was very young. I credit my brother for bringing it to beauty when he developed a number of new transdermal technologies with a research partner at MIT. It was so exciting to see science that had never been done before. So many people believe “everything” has already been discovered. It hasn’t.

Skindinavia Makeup Finishing Spray

MW: How was the concept for Skindinavia born?
AG: Skindinavia was born from a lot of listening at makeup counters. I was the Director of Education for another skin care company dealing with top spas and prestige retailers globally. When we started, we had only four products. One was a light spray moisturizer that hydrated amazingly well.

As I visited stores, I found that the associates were spraying it on top of foundation to give it a healthy glow and lock it in place. We knew we had something right there and started asking more women how they felt their makeup performed. No woman thought their makeup looked perfect all day, and there were no brands focused on improving the quality of the makeup women were already wearing. That how modern day Skindinavia became known as “The Original Makeup Saver”.

MW: Who can benefit using Skindinavia products?
AG: Anyone who wears makeup.

MW: Which Skindinavia products are a must-have in any woman’s makeup bag?
AG: It depends on the woman. We make eight different sprays for all different needs and skin types. If I had to pick one, The Bridal Makeup Finish. It is an amazing product for a very important day.

MW: What makes Skindinävia’s Makeup Finishing Spray work so well?
AG: The fact that it cools the makeup surface. This is really the key. Think of how refrigerated food stays fresher so much longer. We apply this concept to makeup.

MW: What is new this year with Skindinavia?
AG: Coming in 2010, A simple mist that gives your makeup a sun kissed glow all winter (but not a self tanner)….it is really, really amazing because it actually plays an optical illusion to make you appear glowing. We try to keep the line very narrow. We only launch products that we believe do not currently exist anywhere.

Skindinavia Mineral Makeup Finish

MW: Skindinavia seems like a must-have beauty product on Hollywood movie sets, music videos, or even Broadway, can you reveal rumors on any particular celebs using Skindinavia?
AG: We do a large business in both Hollywood and Broadway. We are even provided to the students at the world’s first makeup school in Hollywood. The products have become even more popular as HD film has become more prevalent. We do not sponsor any celebrities by design. We would rather put our resources into constantly improving our products. Allure magazine noted Skindinavia is used on Dancing with the Stars, supposedly Project Runway, Cirque du Soliel. Too many to mention.

MW: What do you love most about your job?
AG: There are two things I really love. One is giving other people jobs. There is nothing that increases someone’s self worth than hiring them. The second is when a customer calls me and asks for a product to be sent overnight because they have to have it. That shows you developed something has truly impacted their life.

MW: What is your philosophy about beauty?
AG: It’s pretty simple. Everyone deserves to look their best. We try to make products that get you an extra compliment or two…..I feel it is always important to let customers know that none of our products perform miracles. They are good, honest products that help your makeup look its best.

MW: Where can we find you when you are not formulating amazing beauty products? What other passions do you have in life?
AG: I love travel. Mostly in the US, I think the West Coast is so beautiful. Sometimes when we are developing products, I will sometimes fly somewhere in California, sit on a beach, have a smoothie, and think about whether it’s really a good idea.

I’ve recently interviewed Laurie Casas, MD, ASERF‘s (Aesthetic Surgery Education and Research Foundation) President and a plastic surgeon practicing in suburban Chicago.

I would like to share with you Dr. Laurie Casas’s insight and tips about injectable treatments like BOTOX Cosmetic & Juvederm, & her answer to this question: Why patients are no longer keeping their injectable treatments a secret?

Laurie Casas, MD, a plastic surgeon

Marta Walsh: Where does your passion for plastic surgery come from?
Dr. Laurie Casas: My passion for plastic surgery comes from a life long desire to make a difference in peoples’ lives and the opportunity to express myself artistically.

MW: Why patients are no longer keeping their injectable treatments a secret?
DR. LC: People know longer feel it is necessary to keep their injectable treatments a secret because these treatments are safe, reliable and affordable when performed by properly trained physicians.

MW: Why injectable treatments became so popular with so many patients men & women?
DR. LC: Injectable treatments are popular because they are safe and reliable and actually deliver predictable results which allow people to feel and look their best.

MW: Why is it easy to fall in love with Botox?
DR. LC: Like most injectable products, Botox Cosmetic delivers predictable, safe and affordable results when performed by properly trained physicians.

MW: How much injectable treatments hurt physically and our pockets? Can we really afford it?
DR. LC: Much like a hair cut or a new pair of shoes, most people budget for injectable treatments.

MW: Which other great facts or findings you would like to share with us about injectable treatments?
DR. LC: The key is to match your expectations and budget with the procedure that will safety and effectively deliver results by a qualified provider.

MW: How can we decide on which type of injectable treatments works best with our skin?
DR. LC: The best way to know what may or may not work for you is to discuss your objectives with a trained physician.

MW: What is the difference between BOTOX Cosmetic & Juvederm?
DR. LC: BOTOX Cosmetic is a neurotoxin that selectively paralyzes muscles that produce facial expressions that give us a sad, tired or an aged appearance. Fillers like Juvederm fill or lift lines or facial depressions that give us a more aged appearance.

MW: Is there any recovery time necessary after injectable treatments?
DR. LC: Not unless you have injection site bruising.

MW: Aside from injectable treatments which other skincare tips can you share with us?
DR. LC: It is important to hydrate your skin, protect yourself from direct sunlight and wind with sun block that blocks UVA and UVB rays, exercise regularly, eat a healthy diet and rest.

MW: What are some your passions besides your work?
DR. LC: I like to spend time with my family and I enjoy sports like scuba diving and skiing.

I’m excited to share with you my interview with Linda Pilkington of Ormonde Jayne Perfumery London.

Linda Pilkington

In this interview Linda Pilkington talks to Marta Walsh about her fascination with perfumes, the Ormonde Jayne store on 28 Old Bond Street London experience, her inspirations behind Ormonde Jayne perfumes, reveals which celebrities are fans of Ormonde Jayne, and confesses about her love for gardening and cooking.

Marta Walsh: When did your fascination with perfumes begin?
Linda Pilkington: When I was 12 years old, my mother gave me my first bottle of perfume. I was actually more enthralled with the bottle than the perfume itself & you can imagine when you are 12, it’s like having a bottle of treasure. It was Madame Rochas and the perfume was this lovely dark cognac colour and the bottle was made of cut glass and about six inches tall. I had spent a lot of time staring longingly at the bottle before my mother gave it to me. Our parents always encouraged us to make our things and give them as Christmas and birthday presents and we were given a lot of hobby books. I spent a lot of time making presents of candles and chocolates when I was young!

Ormonde Jayne Perfumery store on 28 Old Bond Street London

MW: How did the concept for an Ormonde Jayne London Perfumery store come about?
LP: There was never a moment when I sat down and wrote a business plan with the idea of opening a perfume house. Ormonde Jayne has come about through a series of circumstances and nothing more than happenstance. Ten years ago, I bumped into an old friend who knew me from childhood and his first question to me was “Do you still make all those smelly things that I remember from when you were a child?” My friend was now working for Chanel Fine Jewellery and he was very keen for me to help him reset some scented candles that he had bought that weren’t burning very well. It was a very simple thing for me to do and once they were finished and burnt away, he asked me to create my own scented candle for his store. At this point Ormonde Jayne the company was created so I could write an invoice to charge for my services.

MW: Which celebrities are fans of Ormonde Jayne?
LP: Goldie Hawn, Ashley Jensen, Will & Jada Smith, Emma Thompson, Bryan Ferry, Elton John

MW: Can you tell us about the Ormonde Jayne store experience on 28 Old Bond Street in London?
LP: Each of our clients is treated like an A1 celebrity and it has always been this way. We take the view that anyone who has taken the effort to come to our store deserves the full Ormonde Jayne experience. Our staff are highly trained and knowledgeable on every aspect of each of the products and the clients sit down in a very relaxed atmosphere, and in a very unhurried time, are introduced to the perfume library. Nearly every customer becomes a loyal customer of Ormonde Jayne.

MW: What inspires you when creating scents?
LP: It could be anything from an abstract paining to a walk in a rice paddy field in Laos. My starting point is usually directed at they type of scent I feel is missing from my library. It is important to have very good examples of all the different aspects of all the different perfume families represented.

MW: My favorite fragrances from the Ormonde Jayne perfume collection are Ta’if and Champaca. Can you tell us a bit about the journey of creating these two exquisite perfumes?
LP: Champaca by Ormonde Jayne was created nearly seven years ago and came about after I received a sample of Champaca Absolute which is a small orange flower from India. It was an exquisite sophisticated perfume and I thought long and hard about the natural harmony of such a flower.

MW: Ultimately it was a formula that relied on the natural aura and smell of India – the smell of basmati rice and tea. I used a similar philosophy and idea for Ta’if by Ormonde Jayne. LP: The ta’if rose is grows 5,000 feet above sea level in a small town in Saudia Arabia. When you get to this dusty hilltop town you are welcomed with lavish plates of dates and oranges. This struck me again as the natural harmony of such a flower and that is why in Ta’if the first three notes are ta’if rose, orange blossom and dates.

MW: The Ormonde Jayne perfumes are nothing like I’ve tried before. The scents seem to develop on me beautifully throughout the day without ever smelling too overpowering. How do you go about sourcing the perfume notes that go into your perfumes and what makes them different?
LP: Every perfume house has their own trademark that sets it apart from all the other brands. Ormonde Jayne perfumes are known for their complexity, but they are never overpowering. This is down to a personal love of certain ingredients which go into each of the formulations, except for Tolu. We also allow a very long maturation period where the perfumes are sitting in a dark cool room for up to three months. Whenever we are thinking of launching a new perfume we make a point of searching for that exquisite ingredient that no one else has which is rare and often reassuringly expensive.

MW: Which perfume out of the Ormonde Jayne perfume collection is your personal favorite?
LP: They are all my babies – it’s like asking which one is your favourite child! I wear all of them but it very much depends on the occasion – I tend to veer towards Frangipani & Ta’if quite a lot at the moment but if I am going to a perfume convention, I go for my more abstract perfumes like Champaca and Ormonde Woman …really just to show off!

MW: What is new with Ormonde Jayne London Perfumery this year?
LP: Isfarkand which won Wallpaper* Magazine’s ‘Best Scent’ Award is our best seller and all the men have stayed loyal. On July 1st we will be launching the Isfarkand Shampoo & Body Wash to match the Eau de Parfum. Like the rest of the Bathing range, it will be free of parabens, sulphates, petrochemicals, GM ingredients, colourings and mineral oils, so men can jump in the shower use the Isfarkand Shampoo & Body wash and then spray the perfume afterwards and beat the girls off with a stick! For the ladies, we are about to launch the Orris Noir Replenishing Body Lotion & the Orris Noir Hydrating Shower Creme. Up till now, this was the one scent missing from the Bathing Range and it is an intoxicatingly spicy oriental which has proved very popular. The new Ormonde Jayne website and online boutique will be going live in July and customers will be able to purchase in their own currency worldwide. We are working on a perfume right now which we hope will be completed this year but it’s too early to disclose all the details or its name about it as it’s not yet finished. But what I can tell you is that the principal ingredient is a rare and reassuringly expensive oil (30,000€ per kilo). As a young innovative company we are always looking for new ways to wear perfume and as soon as the new perfume is ready I will let you know everything!

MW: What is the best thing about being part of Ormonde Jayne?
LP: Waking up every morning and looking forward to your working day ahead.

MW: What passions do you have besides perfumes?
LP: Gardening & cooking for my two very young sons.

I’m excited to share with you an interview I did with Celebrity Makeup Artist Mylah Morales. Mylah Morales’ clients include Rihanna, Jennifer Hudson, and Leona Lewis.

Mylah Morales

In this interview Mylah Morales talks to me about some of her memorable makeup looks she did with Rihanna, Jennifer Hudson & Leona Lewis. What’s in her makeup bag. The secret to becoming a successful makeup artist, and future plans.

Marta Walsh: When did your fascination of makeup begin?
Mylah Morales: I have loved make up and fashion ever since I was a little girl. I’ve always been into glamour and fashion, so luckily I found my niche.

MW: How did you get your first big break?
MM: I’m the type of girl who knows what she wants and goes after it! Success is something that comes in small doses. I think my popularity has stemmed from my work with Rihanna

MW: What is your makeup philosophy?
MM: I’m a firm believer that your make up should not compete with your hair or outfit. It’s about having everything work in sync. As for make up alone, you should always focus on one point on your face you want to highlight.

MW: How did you end up doing makeup for Rihanna, Jennifer Hudson and Leona Lewis?
MM: Through the B.Lynn Group, which is an image agency that works with celebrity clients. My agent Brandi Simpkins has hooked me up!

MW: Which type of makeup looks do Rihanna, J. Hudson, and Leona Lewis tend to go for?
MM: Every looks is different. It depends on the event. It also depends on the outfit and hair. I tend to keep their faces clean. I LOVE a full lash! Lol

MW: What are some memorable looks you’ve created for Rihanna, Jennifer Hudson and Leona Lewis, and how can we achieve these looks at home.
MM: Wow. I have so many! Lol. Well, I love Rihanna’s Gucci ad! And I just did her for her video with Kanye, which was awesome! Doing Leona for her Cosmo cover was great! And Jennifer’s album packaging was a very good time for us.

MW: Which products are must-haves in your makeup bag?
MM: I love my products from Giorgio Armani and Bobby Brown. Nars is a great line as well.

MW: What’s the key for achieving long-term success and popularity as a makeup artist?
MM: Believing in your client! I knew Rihanna would be a star so I put my personality into my make up for her to really give her a sultry edge. And you also always have to be innovative and keep it fresh.

MW: Who would you love to do makeup for in the future?
MM: Anyone fun with a great personality. I’m not really sure about who exactly I want to do in the future but if I was to flashback I would have loved to do Grace Jones or Audrey Hepburn.

MW: What’s next for Mylah?
MM: What isn’t? I have a lot going on here! Maybe I’ll come out with my own line of makeup, or a book, or who knows! I’m just grateful for what I am doing now.

Celebrity Makeup Artist Jackie Sanchez does make up for Tyra Banks, Alek Wek and Kimora Lee.

In this interview, Jackie Sanchez talks to Marta Walsh about her first breaks as a makeup artist, makeup philosophy, working with supermodel Alek Wek and tips to getting her look, what can we find in her makeup bag, and future plans.

Jackie Sanchez

Marta Walsh: When did your fascination with makeup begin?
Jackie Sanchez: When I was 10 years old my brother got me a makeup kit called Scandia. It had eyeshadow, blush, lipstick, mascara, the works. I still remember opening that first box full of lipsticks!

MW: How did you get your first big break as a makeup artist?
JS: There are so many exciting times that I can remember. I would have to say working with legendary author Toni Morrison opened many doors for me. Traveling with her, accompanying her on book tours, meeting the television elite such as Katie Couric, Diane Sawyer, and Charlie Rose, has been so exciting.

MW: What is your makeup philosophy?
JS: I definitely believe in “less is more”. If you have nice skin why cover it up with heavy foundation and powder. Makeup should enhance your beauty.

MW: How did you end up doing makeup for Alek Wek and what was it like meeting her?
JS: I was fortunate enough to work with Ebony magazine’s Creative Director Harriette Cole and she assigned me to this project. Alek is the most down to earth, sincere and friendly model I have ever met. So polished and professional.

MW: Which types of makeup looks did Alek Wek tend to go for?
JS: Luckily I was given free reign to choose the “look” for Alek that day. With clothing being primarily black and shot against a gray background I decided to give Alek a pop of color. I used a mixture of navy blue eyeshadow highlighted with cobalt blue on top. I used a spicy burgundy bronzer and a shiny gloss with metallic flecks to balance out the strong blue eye color.

MW: What are some memorable makeup looks you’ve created Alek Wek, how can we achieve these looks at home?
JS: My advice would be to practice, practice, practice with neutrals. When you have your application skills in place then venture on to colors like purple, blue or green which are more difficult to work with.

Alek Wek

MW: Which products are must-haves in your makeup bag?
JS: For starters I always prep the face with Dermalogica skincare products. For foundations I like MAC or Black Opal stick foundations. These are great because you can control the coverage by applying thicker as a concealer or by mixing with moisturizer for a soft finish. For eye and cheek colors I turn to MAC, Smashbox, or NARS which come in a variety of textures and sheens – matte, dewy, pearlescent. I am a true lip gloss junkie and I love them all! My favorite mascara for the last 10 years(!) is L’Oreal Voluminous.

MW: What is the key for achieving long term success and popularity as a makeup artist?
JS: I would have to say being good at what you do but also being able to meet the specific needs of each client. If a client mentions a particular product they are fond of, be sure to have it with you every time you work with them. Be flexible and creative to create looks for different occasions. Makeup is about fun and experimentation…why do the exact same look day after day?

MW: Who would you love to do makeup for in the future?
JS: Such a tough question. I would love to work with Halle Berry, Hugh Jackman, and Estelle for starters.

MW: What’s next for Jackie Sanchez?
JS: Hopefully working behind the scenes with a major cosmetic manufacturer on product development. Also I hope to travel the world with some of my clients
