Jada Pinkett & Willow Smith Hair Diary by Celebrity Hairstylist Marcia Hamilton.

This summer Celebrity Hairstylist Marcia Hamilton traveled the world keeping the Smith Family Red Carpet ready for the Karate Kid Press Tour. Together, they traveled to 8 cities with premieres spanning over a few months. Marcia was responsible for creating various looks for both Jada Pinkett-Smith and her daughter Willow. This Mother-Daughter duo made fashion statements and fans buzzing about their looks. This includes Jada’s new “Euro Bang” and Willow’s controversial “Rock Star” Mohawk.

Westwood Premiere

Inspiration: The inspiration behind the Los Angeles premiere came straight from the fashion runways displaying beautiful braids as the new accessory.

Jada Pinkett-Smith – I created a neat, large braid that laid across her head like a crown with a low chignon at the center back of the nape. This look was very simple to create. I blew the hair dry with an Ed Hardy Professional Blow Dryer using the infamous Vintage Collage Edition. I then sectioned the hair horizontally behind the ear and braided the front braid with a light wax like Purity Design’s Pure Modelling Wax, securing the braid in place with a few bobby pins. The chignon was also braided then twirled down and held in place by a bobby pin.

Willow’s leopard attire as well as her rock star persona created the inspiration behind her red carpet look. We decided the best way to compliment her fashion statement was to create a Mohawk in its natural texture that would be fierce and totally on the edge. To give it the delicate sweetheart flair, I pulled the hair off her face and pinned it back into a soft roll. For hold I used J Beverly Hills, Hold Me Spray and Purity Design’s Pure Modelling Wax to maintain the spikes in the back.

London Premiere

Inspiration: My inspiration for Jada was, modern day- Betty Page goes Euro.

Jada Pinkett-Smith – I created the talk of tour when she created her “Euro Bang”. I began by shaping a clean fringe directly above her eyes to create drama. This is always a great way to frame your clients face while drawing attention to their amazing features. The dress for the London premiere was a one shoulder covered with shimmery circular tiles, very mod and feminine. I kept the hair very simple and sleek in a low, side swept ponytail. I flat ironed the hair and fringe with the Ed Hardy Vintage Collage Professional Flat Iron and finished with Purity Design’s Pure Water Drops. A smooth sleek fringe is critical to achieve the dramatic effect you are looking to achieve.

Willow – This look was total “Camden Town Girl”. After blowing her hair straight, I flat ironed it with a bit of Purity Design’s Pure Definition Hair Spray for hold and shine. For the textured look on the ends, I pinched the hair with a wax.

Berlin Premiere

Inspiration: In Berlin, I did a slight twist on this look from the London Premiere.

Jada and Willow – I blow dried their hair with a round brush for more body and volume at the root. Next, I used a flat iron on Willow to add a slight bump to the ends to softly frame her face. Since Jada wore a really fun golden mini dress for this premiere, I kept the hair really sleek from bangs to ends and swept off the shoulders.

Madrid Premiere

Inspiration: The above 90 degree temperatures and humidity are no hairstyles’ best friend so I created these looks to withstand the heat for this premiere.

Jada Pinkett-Smith – My red carpet look for Jada was clean with a dash of spice. I styled her fringe very sleek and smooth with a little extra Purity Design’s Pure Definition Hair Spray. Next, I pulled the pony tail high and tight then added toddle waves for some texture.

Willow – We opted for a cool off the face look by braiding three mini cornrows in the front of her head and securing them with hot pink pony tail holders, leaving the rest of her hair out and smooth.

At the event in Fredricstad, Norway, I also kept Jada’s look sleek and smooth.

Paris Premiere

Inspiration: Paris the city of fashion was my true inspiration. The people of Paris are chic and sophisticated everyone looked.

Jada Pinkett-Smith – I created a “Retro Bouffant” to display the elegance and sophistication only Paris can provide. To begin, I left her fringe smooth but with a little body. To create height in the crown area, I teased it then smoothed the surface. Next, I gently brushed the hair back with a Mason Pearson Brush. All the hair remaining at the bottom was pinched, twisted and tucked then secured with bobby pins.

For Willow, I went a bit high fashion and sleeked her Mohawk back into a very Linda Evangelista look.

Tokyo Premiere

Inspiration: Finally for the Tokyo premiere, my inspiration was to go a bit “Wild”. I was really inspired by the Harujuku kids and their use of color.

Jada Pinkett-Smith – For a dramatic contrast, I added dark brown and platinum blonde extensions, chopped it into a deep asymmetric bob. The contrast was amazing and the choppiness of the cut really accentuated the blonde.

Willow- This was my time to have some fun so Willow and I agreed to play with some temporary color. I used my flat iron and a little White Sands Infinity Hair Spray to flip her hair out, showing more layers. For color, I sprayed the ends of the hair with Temporary Highlight Spray Color in Neon Purple, it was just sheer fabulosity!

For each city, I kept Jaden fresh and clean in cornrows. I was inspired by his character in the movie and his face is so adorable it must be seen from every angle. When there was down time and on some press days, we kept the fro all the way untamed. I really had a blast creating gorgeous hair around the world. Can’t wait to see what my next job has in store for me.

Celebrity Hairstylist Marcia Hamilton created this stunning look for Jada Pinkett Smith at the 3rd Annual Essence Black Women in Hollywood Luncheon.

The Hairstyle: Braided & Textured Pony

Hair Tutorial:

1. Create the Braid – Make a part, starting from behind the left ear to the right ear. Then, create a deep right-side part leaving out the lesser hair. Gather the front section of hair and tease the root to create texture and volume. IT&LY Hairfashion Purity Design Pure Texture Volumizing Spray at the root area for hold. Braid the hair on the scalp from right to left all the way to the end.

2. Make a Pony – Brush the rest of the hair into a high pony above the ears and secure with a holder. Apply H2pro Silk 1 Minute Thermal Hair Treatment on the pony and divide into small sections. Curl into spiralsand apply a light shine serum to your hands and separate spirals. Then, spray with a texturizing mist for added texture and a bit of roughness.

3. Shape the Pony – Take the end of the braid and pin it to the part on the scalp. Then take a bobby pin with the open end, swoop into the curled pony, lift and pin to scalp. This creates a bit of lift and added structure, repeat until you’re happy with the shape. Utilize a light wax spray for shine and texture and finish with White Sands Infinity Finishing Spray for lasting hold.

I’ve been trying to interview Lisa Price the fabulous founder of Carol’s Daughter for quite some time now. And, finally, here it is!

I’m so excited to share with you Lisa’s story of an incredible journey creating a sought after skincare and fragrance line: Carol’s Daughter.

In this interview Lisa Price talks to me about her fascination with fragrance. The Carol’s Daughter Philosophy. Why did she choose Jada Pinkett Smith and Mary J. Blige as the faces for her brand, and what’s new with Carol’s Daughter.

Marta Walsh: When did your fascination with skincare begin?
Lisa Price: It wasn’t so much a love for skincare as it was a love for fragrance which began when I was a little girl. I started creating my own scents and creams because I loved to experiment—it’s always been a hobby and passion of mine.

MW: At what point did your love for making your own skincare products in the kitchen turn into a promising business?
LP: After some time of working as a writing assistant for The Cosby Show, and creating personalized scents and products for the cast, my mom encouraged me to make a small batch to sell at a local church flea market. I nearly sold out on the first day!

MW: What is Carol’s Daughter philosophy?
LP: Every Carol’s Daughter product I create is made with love, and inspired by my own life. Each product is truly unique and created especially for my customers, who are part of the Carol’s Daughter family. The idea is not just about looking good, but feeling good inside and out, comforting your body and spirit. Carol’s Daughter is also about having a strong sense of family as well as love and respect for yourself and others.

MW: Why did you decide to name your brand: Carol’s Daughter?
LP: When I was trying to come up with a name I made a list of things that I was and a list of things I wanted to become. There were other things on the list, like Robert’s daughter and Gordon’s girlfriend. But when I said Carol’s daughter, I got goosebumps. It sounded right. After all, it was my mother Carol’s unwavering love and support that gave me the courage to turn my hobby into a business in the first place.

MW: Mary J. Blige loves the Almond Cookie Collection, and Jay Z keeps it smooth with Ocean Scrub. Why are these products are so easy to fall in love with?
LP: My products are created with love, and I think the homemade aspect really resonates with a lot of people who want something special. Every product has a story, and I think that really shines through.

MW: Where do you draw the inspiration from when creating your skincare collections?
LP: Each product I have tells a story. Some of them come from family, such as my mom or grandmother, others from our friends of the family and many of them from the suggestions of many of our customers. Their comments and feedback mean so much to me.

MW: Jada Pinkett Smith and Mary J. Blige are the familiar faces of Carol’s Daughter. Why have you chosen these women to represent your brand?
LP: These wonderful relationships came about when celebrities started using my products and telling each other how much they loved them. I met Will and Jada through DJ Jazzy Jeff who was first a fan of my products, and Mary is such a wonderful member of the family – she is everything Carol’s Daughter is about

MW: Which is your Carol’s Daughter all time favorite product?
LP: Hair Milk. I love all of my products, but if I had to make a choice, the one thing I could not do without is Hair Milk. It is the only product I have found that can make my hair shiny and manageable.

MW: What’s new this year with Carol’s Daughter?
LP: This August Carol’s Daughter is celebrating its sweet sixteen! This month we are also opening a band new store in Atlanta.

MW: What passions do you have besides making our skin beautiful?
LP: I love to spend time with my family and watch movies. I also still truly enjoy creating new recipes and playing around with new ideas in the kitchen.

I’m very excited to bring to you my interview with Christina Moore who plays Tracy Clark, Naomi’s mom, on CW’s Beverly Hills 90210. I’ve interviewed Christina for Talking Makeup’s celebrity beauty section: www.beautyinterviews.com

Christina Moore also plays the role of Candy Sullivan, a nurse with a unique sense of duty, in an upcoming television drama on TNT called HawthoRNe, directed by Mikael Salomon. Jada Pinkett Smith is also starring on HawthoRNe.

Marta Walsh: How did you decide on a career in acting, and what were some of your first breaks as an actress?
Christina Moore: I loved the theatre. I got into a professional theatre troupe when I was in High School. We toured around the Chicago suburbs doing musicals. It was like a 2nd family for me. There is such a kinship in the arts and I knew I wanted to be a part of it forever.

I got lucky when I landed (alone) in LA. I was cast in a string of popular sit-coms all produced at the Warner Bros studio. (Friends, Suddenly Susan, Just Shoot Me, Drew Carrey) This led to me auditioning for Hyperion Bay, which was my 1st series regular job. I had only been in LA for 2 years at that point. And from there-I was off and running in television.

MW: What attracted you to Tracy Clark, Naomi’s Mom, on the hit CW series Beverly Hills 90210?
CM: Really… What didn’t attract me to Tracy Clark?! She is such a great character. She is rich- like crazy rich and lonely- like crazy lonely and desperate. This is a recipe for disaster, which, for an actress, means lots of great stuff to do. I love the storyline between her and Harry. And I am still looking forward to finding our real SON!!! Plus Naomi is a red, hot mess and being her mom is a roller coaster ride- for sure.

MW: How would you describe your acting role in HawthoRNe on TNT, and was it difficult to play it emotionally?
CM: Candy Sullivan is very different from Tracy Clark. It has been a challenge switching from one to the other. Nurse Candy is grounded and sure of herself. She works with her own set of rules, rules that maybe only she understands. I have had interesting discussions with the producers about her mysterious nature. I am sure that Candy has secrets, but I don’t know how long it is going to take for them to come out. So, to answer your question, yes, it has been difficult to play her- emotionally & mentally. But I love every minute of it.

MW: What was it like meeting Jada Pinkett Smith on set of HawthoRNe, and the rest of the cast?
CM: Jada is a dream. She is kind and generous and so full of life. She is as big as a minute, but NEVER underestimate her joie de vivre. Her life force is huge and magnetic.

My other cast mates are great. I especially enjoy David Julian Hirsh, who plays Ray. He and I relate, off camera, much like Candy and Ray. It is a playful tug o war.

MW: What is next for Christina Moore?
CM: We shall see…. Juggling 2 TV series has kept me very busy, but work begets work, so watch out, I might just add a feature film to my to do list any day now.

I keep my hair beautiful thanks to…
L’Oreal Professionnel Expert- Absolut Repair- (shampoo, conditioner, deep conditioner): it is the best at repairing my damaged ends and keeping my hair from looking fuzzy & broken.

Moroccan Oil: after shower, before blow-dry. This oil smoothes out the frizzies and protects my hair from the heat. Plus, it smells like a tropical vacation.

My favorite skincare products are…
Mannatech Optimal Face Wash: it is creamy and doesn’t dry out my skin
Kinara Intense Moisturizer: I can’t live without it. VERY HYDRATING-and again, the smell, like vanilla cookies. Yummy.

I get my eyelashes looking long, full, and sexy using…
Cover Girl Lash Blast (in the orange tube) – the best everyday mascara
FRESH (tube: black, covered in white flowers)- very good
THE BEST- Dior (it only lasts for one month- so I save it for special occasions)

The best lip-gloss I ever owned…
This is the hardest question for me. I LOVE lip-gloss. If I was left on an island and I could only have one thing-it would be lip-gloss. I carry about 12 different tubes in my purse everyday.
Liplicious- tasty lip color (from Bath and Body works) in Frozen Blackberry. It is creamy and glossy and tastes good- I wear it the most.

Other mentionables:
Lancôme- Juicy Tubes
Hourglass- in Search
Mirabella- Outshine-in Subtle

My signature fragrance is…
Bvlgari- Pour Femme (the yellow one)
I LOVE IT!!!

The one beauty product you will always find in my purse is…
Cle de Peau correcteur visage concealer in beige.
Nothing works as well for under the eyes. NOTHING!

My number one beauty secret is…
Vitamins- I take supplements every day and they have kept me healthy from the inside out. Mannatech makes a packet with all of the essentials. I have some in my car, my purse, next to bed, just in case.

The celebrity I find most beautiful is…
Jessica Lange- her grace and fragility and endurance. WOW.

The city I love the most…
Rome, Italy. I have been 3 times in the past 5 years. I can’t get enough of it. I find the presence of ancient history to be comforting- calming. You just know how small you are in the history of the world standing in awe of the Pantheon.

One or two things some people may not know about Christina Moore…

I love country music. It is really all I listen to. I go to the concerts- I buy the mp3′s. I am a true FAN.

If I wasn’t an actor, I would like to be a serial killer profiler.

I love Nacho Cheese Doritos.

It was great to discuss beauty secrets withChristina make sure to check out the official site for both of her hit shows. www.tnt.tv/series/hawthorne / and www.cwtv.com/shows/90210
