Karl Lagerfeld gave Sam (McKnight) and me a sketch giving us a rough idea of the direction he wanted for the look, from then the tone was set. Karl also showed us the world-famous mosaic portrait of Theodora, the Empress of the Byzantine Empire Mosaic from the Saint-Vital de Ravenne Basilica, which very naturally became the inspiration for the show’s makeup.”

Julia’s red carpet makeup was created by celebrity makeup artist Genevieve Herr who channeled a chic and modern look that played up Julia’s light brown eyes and her sleek black ensemble.

For a natural complexion, Genevieve used Lancôme’s new Teint Miracle Foundation, an amazing radiance-boosting foundation launching next month, Laura Mercier Secret Concealer and Secret Brightening Powder followed by a cream blush in plum on the apples of the cheeks. She wanted to give Julia soft, smoky eyes with a mix of blacks and plums. To achieve this, she first applied Le Crayon Khôl in Black Ebony to line the eyes and then blended shadows from Lancôme’s new fall French Coquettes collection called the French Touch Color Design Quad. Her lashes were topped with Définicils Precious Cells Mascara in Black for a full, natural lash. At Richard Chai, Gucci Westman for Revlon keyed makeup. Lips were defined with new-for-fall Revlon Suede Rhapsody Multi-Use Palette, set to launch in September 2010. First, Gucci applied ColorStay Lip Liner in Red all over the lip as a base, then painted on the deeper red lipstick from the palette which created a matte effect. “The clothes don’t have a lot of color, so I felt a pop of pigment was needed on the lips,” explains Westman.

Vanessa Paradis and Kate Bosworth wearing CHANEL Rouge Coco Hydrating Crème Lip Colour at a dinner in honor of Vanessa Paradis, celebrating the launch of CHANEL Rouge Coco. Tuesday, February 9, 2010 at The Mark Hotel, New York, NY.

CHANEL celebrity makeup artist Fulvia Farolfi worked with Vanessa Paradis, CHANEL beauty muse and the face of CHANEL Rouge Coco, for the event. Fulvia lined her lips with CHANEL Lip Definer in Rouge, and applied CHANEL Rouge Coco in Gabrielle, a gorgeous true red shade. Fulvia prepped Vanessa’s skin with CHANEL Ultra Correction Lift Day Cream. For her complexion, she used CHANEL Long Lasting Concealer in Beige Clair, and CHANEL Pro Lumiere Foundation in Nude. Her cheeks were sculpted with CHANEL Powder Blush in Fandango. On Vanessa’s eyes, Fulvia used CHANEL Intense Eye Pencil in Noir along the top lashes, and on the lids she combined the shades from CHANEL Quadra Eye Shadow in Mystic Eyes. To make her eyes pop, she applied two coats of CHANEL Inimitable Mascara.

CHANEL Celebrity Makeup Artist Angela Levin worked with Kate Bosworth, who was also in attendance at the dinner. Kate wore CHANEL Rouge Coco in Ruban Rose, a beautiful warm pale pink shade. On Kate’s complexion, Angela used CHANEL Vitalumiere Fluid Makeup in Beige. For her eyes, she combined shades from two CHANEL Quadra Eye Shadows, Mystic Eyes and Reflets D’Ombre. She then topped her lashes with two coats of CHANEL Inimitable Mascara. Finally, she dabbed a bit of CHANEL Rouge Coco in Rose Comète on the apples of Kate’s cheeks – one of Angela’s signature makeup tricks!

Makeup Tutorial: It was a lovefest in Los Angeles last night at the premiere of “Valentine’s Day.” The star-studded flick, directed by Garry Marshall, features a bevy of A-list beauties, including Lancôme ambassadors Julia Roberts and Anne Hathaway. Here, their makeup artists fill us in on what they used to create their red carpet looks.

For Julia Roberts, celebrity makeup artist Genevieve wanted to balance sexy, lined eyes with a muted mouth. Genevieve lined Julia’s eyes with Lancôme’s Artliner in Noir. Next, she swept Sweetie, a sheer pink shadow from Lancôme’s Color Design Eye Shadow Quad in Haute Sunset, along the lids. Dirty Pink, from the same quad, went on the crease. Loads of Hypnôse Drama Mascara in Excessive Black completed the eye look. For the lips, Genevieve lined with Lancôme’s Le Lipstique in Fraichelle followed by the new Color Design Matte lipstick in Pink Preview (coming in March). To dilute the lipstick color, Juicy Tubes in Tickled Pink was applied for a soft pout.

For Anne Hathaway, celebrity makeup artist Kate Lee prepped Anne’s skin with Chanel Sublimage Fluid, followed by Chanel Vitalumière Fluid Foundation. Anne’s smoldering eyes were a combination of Lancôme Le Crayon Khôl Eyeliner in Black Ebony, Chanel Quadra Eye Shadow in Kaska Beige and Lancôme Virtuôse Black Carat Mascara. Anne’s pretty cheek color was Chanel Powder Blush in Fresque. Topping Anne’s vibrant pout: Lancôme L’Absolu Rouge Lipcolor in Perfect Fig.

CHANEL Haute Couture Spring/Summer 2010

GET THE LOOK: Lancôme’s new ambassadress Julia Roberts looked gorgeous on the red carpet at the Golden Globe Awards. Celebrity makeup artist Genevieve created Julia’s look and Talking Makeup got the inside scoop.

First, Genevieve applied Lancôme Bienfait Multi Vital Teinté to Julia’s flawless complexion. Just a hint of color was applied to the cheeks with Lancôme Color Design Cream Blush in Petticoat Pink. Genevieve used her finger to apply and pressed the color on to Julia’s cheeks. To create a dramatic eye, Le Crayon Khôl in Black Ebony was used. Several coats of Lancôme Définicils Pro Mascara in Black created lush, dark lashes. Genevieve opted for a soft natural-looking pout. She applied Lancôme Le Lipstique lip liner in Natural Mauve then coated the lips with Lancôme L’Absolu Rouge in Coquette and topped with Lancôme Juicy Tubes in Hallucination for a high-shine finish.
