Hello lovlies:) I’m super excited to share with you today my interview with Hollywood actress and star of an American dramatic television series Mad Men Christina Hendricks. Last month Christina Hendricks kicked off the LATTISSE Wishes Challenge. About the same time I was given the chance to interview Miss Hendricks about LATTISSE, her role in Mad Men, beauty, inspirations, and future plans.

Christina Hendricks Interviews With Marta Walsh

Marta Walsh: Where do you call home?
Christina Hendricks: Home is in Los Angeles, where I live with my husband.

MW: How did you get into acting?
CH: I always wanted to be an actress. I started doing community theater in my home town when I was young, then moved to New York to pursue acting fulltime.

MW: How did your collaboration with LATTISSE come about?
CH: As an actress, I wear a lot of makeup and false lashes, which took a toll on my lashes. So when LATISSE® (bimatoprost ophthalmic solution) 0.03% was approved by the FDA as the first and only prescription treatment for inadequate or not enough lashes (eyelash hypotrichosis) that grows your own lashes longer, fuller and darker, I was very curious and interested to learn more.

My doctor determined LATISSE was right for me. I’m looking forward to seeing my full results after 16 weeks while helping to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation® through the LATISSE® Wishes Challenge, a campaign inspired by the tradition of blowing on an eyelash to make wishes come true. Your readers can learn more at www.latissewisheschallenge.com.

MW: What do you love most about LATTISSE for your lashes?
CH: Of course, that it’s making them grow! I’ve just started to see a little bit of length and am excited to see more. I also like that it provides an option for women who may notice their lashes thinning over time. This is another reason why they may choose to see a doctor about LATISSE®. I might even book my mom an appointment!

MW: What did your role in Mad Men bring to you as actress?
CH: Working on mad men is such a joy. Every single person that works on that show is so talented and it’s an honor to go to work every day.

MW: What’s your philosophy about beauty?
CH: It’s important to have healthy, good-looking skin. I’m very fair so I take special care of my skin by applying sunscreen daily, not only on my face but also on my arms and chest.

MW: Who & what inspires you?
CH: My husband inspires me every day.

MW: Aside from LATTISEE for your lashes what are some of your other best kept beauty secrets or rituals?
CH: In the morning, when I feel I need a little pick-me-up, I sweep on my favorite cream-based blush and it instantly wakes up my face and I feel just the right amount of pretty! For the perfect shade of lips, I use Dolce and Gabbana classic cream lipstick in “cosmopolitan.” It’s a vibrant coral color – perfect for spring and summer.

MW: What one or two things some people may not know about Christian Hendricks?
CH: I love to sing and dance! I was a dancer for years. I recently got to go back to theatre while performing COMPANY with the NY Phil at Lincoln Center. It was so fun.

MW: What’s next for Christina Hendricks?
CH: I go back to work on “Mad Men” soon which I’m super excited about. I also have two movies coming out in September. A comedy called, I Don’t Know How She Does It and an action drama called Drive.

Lana Horochowski, Department Head of Makeup for Mad Men, loves using NARS on the cast-members of Mad Men. “I love, love, LOVE the NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencils because they are long-lasting and give that perfect matte finish that is so authentic to the time period,” says Lana. “In the past, we used mostly cream cheek color because that was used in the period. Since powder blush was invented in 1963, we were finally able to throw it in for this season!”

Below are details on what Lana has used to create the looks for January Jones’ Betty Draper and Christina Hendricks’ Joan Harris.

Betty Draper, January Jones:

“January’s character Betty wears NARS Madrague Duo Eyeshadow in almost every scene when she is at home. “It’s a staple,” explains Lana, “but when she goes out, we spice it up with color.” To add emphasis to her eyes, Lana adds NARS Heart Of Glass Eyeshadow. For her lips, she uses NARS Calliope Velvet Matte Lip Pencil and NARS Belle de Jour Velvet Matte Lip Pencil. “I also love Barbarella Lipstick on January because it’s perfect for her every day look.” For blush, try NARS Penny Lane Cream Blush, NARS Gueule de Nuit Cream Blush, and NARS Gilda Powder Blush!

Joan Holloway, Christina Hendricks:

“For Christina’s sexy Joan I love the bold colors of NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencils in Dolce Vita, Red Square, Sex Machine, and Forbidden Red.” Lana also uses NARS Heat Wave Lipstick and NARS Jungle Red Lipstick! For her eyes, she uses NARS Madrague Duo Eyeshadow and NARS Fez and Bali Single Eyeshadows. “With Christina’s peaches and cream complexion” Lana explains, “she looks great in NARS Gueule de Nuit Cream Blush, as well as NARS Dolce Vita, Gilda, and Gina Powder Blush.”

Find out what goes behind makeup on the set of Mad Men on AMC: MAC Artist Relations department provides makeup support to several movies, theater and TV shows. Of course, Mad Men is one of them! Talking Makeup is excited to share with you a Q&A with Mad Men’s lead makeup artist Lana Horochowski.

Q: You’re the new department head at Mad Men for Season 3, will you be making any changes to any characters makeup?
A: Since we are moving a little forward into the future, we have changed up the color palette for each character to go along with the time period.

Q: When you were preparing for this season, did you do any research for inspiration? If so, what most inspired you?
A: Weeks and weeks of meetings and research. I love looking through the old magazines. They are a great reference and a huge source of inspiration; however, we do try to keep the characters looking like real people that do their own makeup and not like movie stars with a makeup artist standing by. Magazines and old movies are a great guideline for a basic look and color selection.

Q: How would you describe the looks of each one of the characters? How do they differ?
A: Joan Holloway- always put together, very sassy and sexy Betty Draper- although she is a housewife she is an ex model, so her makeup is clean but very current for the period Peggy Olson- Peggy is a young and fresh faced business woman of that period, she is a very clean natural makeup

Q: What are your key products for creating the makeup looks for the main female characters?
A: Joan Holloway- We do a heavier eye on Christina, so the key products would be eyeliner and strip lashes. Betty Draper- Betty has 2 distinct looks, her at home look and her going out/evening look. For home she is very natural, basically a sheer foundation, think black eyeliner and mascara. Evening Betty goes a little thicker on the liner and a brighter lipstick, but aalways coordinated with her clothing. Peggy Olson- Since the key to Peggy’s look is to appear as though she is wearing no makeup, a great foundation is super important. Also, a natural cheek and lip stain is applied to give her a little color.

Q: What are your favorite M•A•C products for each character?
A: Joan Holloway- Cream Colour Base in Virgin Isle, Fluidline in Blacktrack and Rich Ground, brown and black, and Eye Shadow in Soft Brown. Betty Draper- Cream Colour Base in Virgin Isle, Blushcreme in Posey, and Lipsticks in Vegas Volt, Lip Pencil in Redd and Cherry. Peggy Olson- Eye Shadow in Orb, Vanilla, and Soft Brown and Blot Powder

Q: Everyone always notices the lips on the show, but brows seem to play a very important part to the look. Can you talk about the brows on the show?
A: Women of the 60′s had a stricter code of style and etiquette, so people tended to follow the trends closer to the book. Nowadays, women have a variety of different brow styles so we are constantly tweezing, shaping, and filling the brows to recreate the look of the period.

Q: Each character has the most perfect lashes framing her eyes. What are your favorite lashes to use to get that perfectly plump line of lashes?
A: We love the MAC individual lashes as well as the traditional strip lashes.

Q: Do you collaborate with the hair and costume departments when coming up with a look?
A: Absolutely! We have at least 3 meetings per episode to create the look as a unit. I could not do this show without Lucia Mace (hair), Janie Bryant (costumes), and my fabulous key Ron Pipes!

Q: There seems to be a lot of making out on the show, how many times do you have to redo those red lips? Does it get messy?
A: We do what we can to seal the lip color, but we still have to go in every take to perform a minor clean up.

Q: What can real women take away from the show’s look and incorporate into their everyday look?
A: Well, a great start would be lining the top lash line only with a gel liner like MAC Fluidline. We love this product for recreating the perfect 60′s eye. Also, replacing gloss and sheer or shimmer lipsticks with matte reds, bright pinks, and corals help create a more retro look. Lastly, instead of a powder blush try using creme in pinks and corals to create a flushed looking cheek. For evening, strip lashes are always a bonus.

One of the latest projects is the film production of Twilight, the highly anticipated, #1 New York Times Bestselling book by Stephenie Meyer brought to life. With over 17 million books in print, these books are a cultural phenomenon.

The movie Twilight, is scheduled to premiere in November 21, 2008.

Below is an interview with Makeup Department Head Jeanne Van Phue with some insight into the makeup direction of the movie.

Q: What was the process for creating the various characters’ looks?
A: Katherine Hardwicke, the director, and I have previously worked together on a movie called “Lords of Dogtown,” so we know each other very well. I began by preparing sketches of my vision, keeping in mind the descriptions Stephanie Myers (Twilight’s Author) set forth in the books.
Bella’s (Kristen Stewart’s character) description in the novel is very pale and extremely beautiful with large chocolate brown eyes, so she wore colored lenses every day. I also pictured her as a natural beauty, which is exactly what Kristen is. I used a light hand while applying all neutral colors to make her look as though she had no makeup on.
Edward’s (Robert Pattinson’s character) description in the novel is impossibly handsome almost god-like. His skin is marble-pale, hard as stone and ice cold, but perfect and flawless. Edwards’ eyes are described as topaz colored when he is normal and black like onyx, when hungry.

Q: Were there any changes to the looks of the characters that weren’t planned?
A: At the beginning, Katherine Hardwicke visualized Edward with long hair, yet after studying his face and jaw line in the makeup test, the decision was made to go with short hair to accentuate his amazing jaw line.

Q: What was the overall look of the makeup in this movie?
A: All the vampires had to be pale, but I didn’t want them to look to ghoulish, somewhere between Sweeney Todd and Interview with the Vampire. The choice was made for a denser, more opaque look for the supporting vampires and a lighter look for the leading man.
The challenge was they still had to look beautiful and handsome. The key was striking the delicate shading balance. We had two weeks of makeup test. This is the time for a makeup artist to unleash their imagination. During the testing Katherine let me know when I was on the mark. Katherine has a fabulous eye for detail and everything I did had to be approved by her.

Q: Were there any other challenges you encountered while working on location in Portland, Oregon?
A: The rain was a huge challenge. We were outside, and it rained the entire time we were there. Most of the shots were exterior; trying to fix makeup in the rain with wet faces and wet brushes was difficult. In the end, I must say I loved working on this movie, it challenge my creativity as never before. The cast was such a great group of talented young actors.

Q: What were your non-makeup related responsibilities in terms of creating this look?
A: Another one of my jobs was too find a contact lens specialist. So I called upon the expertise of Cristina Patterson Ceret FX lens/painter from Professional VisionCare.

Q: What M·A·C products did you use on the film Twilight?
A: The M.A.C products I used on this film were eye shadows and powder for our principles. We had several other characters and day players I used M.A.C. foundations, lipsticks and blushes.

Q: How long have you used M·A·C products?
A: In 30 years as a makeup artist in my career and over 50 movies, M·A·C products have played an integral part in my work. I have probably used all of them at one time or another. I choose the cosmetics based on their skin tone and whether they are oily or dry. It also depends on how the product reacts to their particular skin type.
