Hollywood’s top makeup and hair talent have share with TM & Marta Walsh their inspiration, “how-to” steps and the L’Oréal Paris and Matrix products necessary to replicate the stunning styles seen on the following celebs at the 2012 Golden Globe Awards.

DIANNA AGRON (MAKEUP)

Makeup Artist: Monika Blunder

Inspiration: For Dianna’s makeup, Monika was inspired by the spring 2012 fashion shows where the makeup was fresh but still very glamorous. Since Dianna’s red Giles dress was so “va va voom,” Monika focused on the lips to be the stand out feature.

Step by Step How-To:

Monika kept Julianna’s skin simple and fresh with a bit of L’Oréal Paris True Match Super-Blendable Makeup in Light Ivory to give skin a light glow. Since the focus was kept on her lips, only a small amount of L’Oréal Paris Magic Smooth Soufflé Blush in Celestial (Pink) was applied to the apples of cheeks. The bold red lip stole the show; Monika applied L’Oréal Paris Infallible Le Rouge in Bold Bordeaux for lasting shine and pigment. The eyes were highlighted with a hint of L’Oréal Paris Infallible Eye Shadow in Iced Latte with Vaseline applied over it to create added shine. The L’Oréal Paris Voluminous Smoldering Eyeliner in Black was lightly applied around the rim of the eye and Monika applied several coats of L’Oréal Paris Voluminous False Fiber Lashes Mascara in Black to complete the look

Products Used:

L’Oréal Paris True Match Super-Blendable Makeup in Light Ivory ($10.95)

L’Oréal Paris Magic Smooth Soufflé Blush in Celestial ($12.95)

L’Oréal Paris Infallible Eye Shadow in Iced Latte (Price: $7.95)

L’Oréal Paris Voluminous Smoldering Eyeliner in Black ($8.95)

L’Oréal Paris Voluminous False Fiber Lashes Mascara in Black ($9.95)

L’Oréal Paris Infallible Le Rouge in Bold Bordeaux ($9.95)

Julie Bowen (MAKEUP)

Makeup Artist: Heather Currie

Inspiration: Heather was completely inspired by Julie’s classic Reem Acra, peachy-champagne dress. To match her Grace Kelly-esque hair, Heather wanted to create an old Hollywood glam makeup moment with a neutral palette for the face and lips (with hints of pink) and defined, smoky eyes.

Step by Step How-To:

To create the base look, Heather started with an Armani foundation. Next, she applied L’Oréal Paris Magic Smooth Soufflé Blush in Celestial to the apples of Julie’s cheeks to create a radiant, natural and youthful glow. On the eyes, Heather created a winged tip eye with L’Oréal Paris Voluminous Smoldering Eyeliner in Black. She also used L’Oréal Paris Extra-Intense Carbon Black Eyeliner to precisely define the rest of the eyes. Heather used a sheer amount of L’Oréal Paris Infallible Eye Shadow in Continues Cocoa in the creases of Julie’s eyes. She then blended L’Oréal Paris Infallible Eye Shadow in Iced Latte and Eternal Sunshine to create a sultry, smoky eye effect. An extra dab of L’Oréal Paris Infallible Eye Shadow in Iced Latte was used under the eyebrow line to add additional definition and depth. Lips were kept natural with a hint of color using L’Oréal Paris Colour Riche Le Gloss in Golden Splash

Products Used:

L’Oréal Paris Voluminous Smoldering Eyeliner in Black ($8.95)

L’Oréal Paris Extra-Intense Carbon Black Eyeliner ($8.95)

L’Oréal Paris Infallible Eye Shadow in Continues Cocoa, Iced Latte & Eternal Sunshine ($9.99)

L’Oréal Paris Voluminous False Fiber Lashes Mascara in Blackest Black ($9.95)

L’Oréal Paris Magic Smooth Soufflé Blush in Celestial ($12.95)

L’Oréal Paris Colour Riche Le Gloss in Golden Splash ($7.95)

Freida Pinto (HAIR)

Hair Stylist: Giannandrea Marongiu

Inspiration: Inspired by Freida’s princess-like Prada dress, Giannandrea wanted to keep the hair easy and simple so that the overall look was elegant, timeless and, of course, chic. Giannandrea created a soft twist with the top and sides of Freida’s hair while giving the crown that extra oomph for volume. Cascading waves fell softly down her back to maintain the feel of effortless beauty.

Step by Step How-To:

Giannandrea began with wet hair and applied a generous amount of L’Oréal Paris EverStyle Volume Boosting Mousse before using a hairdryer to blow it dry using only his fingers to give hair texture. He then applied L’Oréal Paris EverStyle Alcohol-Free Volume Root Lifting Spray & Volume Boosting Mousse to just the crown area to create voluminous lift. Using a round brush, he blasted hair – separated in sections – with high heat and then temporarily set each section with Velcro rollers. After spraying each section with L’Oréal Paris Elnett Satin Hairspray – Extra Strong Hold Unscented for a soft hold, he let the hair sit while Freida got her makeup done. After her makeup was applied, he took out the rollers and brushed through the curls to create soft, flowing waves down her back. He then back combed the crown for added lift and took the top portion of the hair with a few pieces from each side and created a very subtle, soft twist that flowed into the length of the hair. To finish the look, he used a touch of the L’Oréal Paris EverStyle Alcohol-Free Smooth & Shine Crème to smooth out the length and sides to give the style an overall clean feel. Giannandrea set Freida’s look with L’Oréal Paris Elnett Satin Hairspray – Extra Strong Hold Unscented to keep hair in place throughout the night.

Products Used:

L’Oréal Paris EverStyle Alcohol-Free Volume Root Lifting Spray & Volume Boosting Mousse ($6.99 each)

L’Oréal Paris Elnett Satin Hairspray Extra Strong Hold Unscented ($14.99)

L’Oréal Paris EverStyle Alcohol-Free Smooth & Shine Crème ($6.99)

FREIDA PINTO (MAKEUP)

Makeup Artist: Leslie Lopez

Inspiration: “Freida has such gorgeous eyes!” said Leslie. “I really wanted to channel a young Sophia Loren and make Freida’s eyes the focal point of her look.”

Step by Step How-To:

Leslie gave Freida a flawless face by starting with L’Oréal Paris True Match Super-Blendable Foundation in W6 (Sun Beige). She created a sun-kissed look on the cheeks with L’Oréal Paris Magic Smooth Soufflé Blush in Cherubic. For Freida’s eyelids, she used L’Oréal Paris Infallible Eye Shadow in Bronzed Taupe, and Iced Latte on the brow bone for an extra pop of shimmer. Leslie gave the look an extra layer of smokiness with L’Oréal Paris Voluminous Smoldering Eyeliner in black before curling her lashes and applying a few coats of L’Oréal Paris Voluminous Million Lashes Mascara in Black. To keep Freida’s eyes the focus, she kept her lips on the natural side with L’Oréal Paris Infallible Le Rouge in Lingering Mocha, a soft mauve.

Products Used:

L’Oréal Paris True Match Super Blendable Foundation ($10.95)

L’Oréal Paris Magic Smooth Soufflé Blush ($12.95)

L’Oréal Paris Infallible Eye Shadow ($7.95)

L’Oréal Paris Voluminous Smoldering Eyeliner ($8.95)

L’Oréal Paris Voluminous Million Lashes Mascara ($8.95)

L’Oréal Paris Infallible Le Rouge ($9.95)

Julianna Margulies (HAIR)

Hair Stylist: Matthew Monzon

Inspiration: Inspired by Julianna’s Naeem Khan dress, Matthew wanted to compliment the sophisticated style with a hairstyle that was simple, fresh and young. Matthew created a polished ponytail, but punched it up with a touch of allure by adding volume and height to the top and front of her hair. The ponytail was sleek, glossy and tight to compliment and finish her classic look of the night.

Step by Step How-To:

To create a volumized ponytail, Matthew first used L’Oréal Paris EverStyle Alcohol-Free Volume Root Lifting Spray & Volume Boosting Mousse on damp hair, combing it through from root to end and blow dried Julianna’s hair with a large round brush. Once hair was dry, Matthew sectioned the hair in two parts, securing a low ponytail and leaving the front/top section of hair out. Next, Matthew added some height to the top and front of Julianna’s hair by slightly teasing it with a brush. He then secured all of hair together to make a tight ponytail. He then took a quarters size dollop of L’Oréal Paris EverStyle Alcohol-Free Smooth & Shine Crème & Serum and smoothed over the sides and in the ponytail to ensure that all hair looked smooth and glossy. Matthew finished Julianna’s look with L’Oréal Paris Elnett Satin Hairspray Extra Strong Hold Unscented to keep hair in place throughout the night

Products Used:

L’Oréal Paris EverStyle Alcohol-Free Volume Root Lifting Spray & Volume Boosting Mousse ($6.99 each)

L’Oréal Paris EverStyle Alcohol-Free Smooth & Shine Crème & Serum ($6.99 each)

L’Oréal Paris Elnett Satin Extra Strong Hold Unscented Hairspray ($14.99)

JULIANNA MARGULIES (MAKEUP)

Makeup Artist: Kristofer Buckle

Inspiration: For Julianna’s makeup, Kris was inspired by Julianna’s deep mauve, metallic Naeem Khan dress. He wanted to create something that would complement its texture and liquid-like flow.

Step by Step How-To:

For the night, Kris kept Julianna’s skin simple with glowing soft tones to accentuate her olive skin. To keep Julianna’s complexion looking flawless he used L’Oréal Paris True Match Super-Blendable Makeup in Soft Ivory. For her cheeks he applied L’Oréal Paris Magic Smooth Soufflé Blush in Plume. The eyes really took center stage with a soft smoky eye that was created with watercolor-like shades using L’Oréal Paris Infallible Eye Shadow in Bronzed Taupe, Eternal Sunshine and Iced Latte. To tie the look together Kris used a hint L’Oréal Paris Infallible Eye Shadow in Iced Latte on Julianna’s upper cheeks to tie in the eyes and glowing tones of her skin. Lips were left unlined and highlighted natural tones (with a hint of mauve) using L’Oréal Paris Infallible Le Rouge in Forever Frappe

Products Used:

L’Oréal Paris True Match Super-Blendable Makeup in Soft Ivory ($10.95)

L’Oréal Paris Magic Smooth Soufflé Blush in Plume ($12.95)

L’Oréal Paris Infallible Eye Shadow in Bronzed Taupe, Eternal Sunshine and Iced Latte ($7.95)

L’Oréal Paris Voluminous False Fiber Lashes Mascara in Black ($9.95)

L’Oréal Paris Voluminous Smoldering Eyeliner in Brown ($8.95)

L’Oréal Paris Infallible Le Rouge in Forever Frappe ($9.95)

Emma Stone (HAIR)

Hair Stylist: Mara Roszak

Inspiration: To complement her striking Lanvin gown, stylist Mara Roszak wanted Emma’s hair to emulate that same edgy and effortless style. Staying away from anything too romantic, the rougher texture was key in achieving the goal of the style – a strong feel while remaining feminine.

Step by Step How-To:

Starting with wet hair, applied MATRIX Total Results Amplify Foam Volumizer. Rough dried hair to extenuate natural texture. Used a 1” barrel curling iron to touch up natural wave. Took a dab of MATRIX Total Results Curl Contouring Lotion to tame any extra frizz throughout the hair and give it a bit more definition. Pulled hair back loosely letting the front of the hair and pieces around the face fall out. Twist ends of hair and pull back to create a loose, messy chignon in the back, letting the front of the hair and pieces around the face fall out. Once hair was back and pinned, began dropping the hair into the messy bun shape, pinning and wrapping each piece individually. To secure the style, used BIOLAGE Freeze Fix Hair Spray. Pinned in Lanvin hair accessory.

Products Used:

MATRIX Total Results Amplify Foam Volumizier ($15, Matrix.com for salon locations)

MATRIX Total Results Curl Contouring Cream ($15, Matrix.com for salon locations)

BIOLAGE Freeze Fix Hair Spray ($15, Matrix.com for salon locations)

Katharine McPhee (MAKEUP)

Makeup Artist: Lauren Andersen

Inspiration: To complement Katharine’s ethereal Donna Karan number, Lauren crated an equally innocent beauty look that was fresh-faced and youthful. “This beauty look was very sweet,” Lauren said. “I used the flower Baby’s Breath as my inspiration for creating a look for Katharine that was simple and natural.”

Step by Step How-To:

To create the base for her look, Lauren started with Cle de Peau Beaute Refining Fluid Foundation SPF 24. Next, she applied L’Oréal Paris Magic Smooth Soufflé Blush in Celestial to the apples of Katharine’s cheeks for a soft, natural flush. On the eyes, she swiped L’Oréal Paris Infallible Eye Shadow in Iced Latte across the lids, blending it into the crease for a sultry, warm smoky eye. She also thinly lined eyes with L’Oréal Paris Voluminous Smoldering Eyeliner in Brown to deepen the look of lashes, which she coated with L’Oréal Paris Voluminous Million Lashes Mascara. For the lips, Lauren used Dior Rouge Contour Lip Liner in Linen and L’Oréal Paris Infallible Gloss 8HR in Petal. Lauren finished with a dusting of YSL Poudre Sur Mesure – a semi loose powder in neutral to set the overall look

Products Used:

L’Oréal Paris Magic Smooth Soufflé Blush ($12.95)

L’Oréal Paris Infallible Eye Shadow ($7.95)

L’Oréal Paris Voluminous Smoldering Eyeliner in Brown ($8.95)

L’Oréal Paris Voluminous Million Lashes Mascara ($8.95)

L’Oréal Paris Infallible Gloss 8HR in Petal ($9.99)

Mila Kunis (HAIR)

Hair Stylist: Mara Roszak

Inspiration: To complement her Old Hollywood-inspired gorgeous black Dior dress, Mara created a loose braided bun that felt classic and youthful all at once. “Mila has such an overall elegance to her style. I wanted to create a look that would complement the femininity of the dress while still looking polished,” Mara said.

Step by Step How-To:

First, Mara treated the ends of Mila’s damp hair to L’Oréal Paris EverStyle Smooth and Shine Serum. She started at the bottom and worked the serum up further into hair for a smooth base. From here, she sprayed L’Oréal Paris EverStyle Volume Root Lifting Spray at the roots to add extra oomph while blow-drying with a round brush. Next, Mila’s hair was gathered into a low ponytail, loosely braided and secured with a hair elastic. This loose braid was then wrapped into a bun shape around the elastic and pinned into place using bobby pins. A touch of Oribe Rough Luxury Molding Wax was used to smooth any remaining flyaways and frizzies. A final mist of L’Oréal Paris Elnett Satin Extra Strong Hold Unscented Hairspray was used to lock in the style for touchable hold.

Products Used:

L’Oréal Paris EverStyle Smooth and Shine Serum ($6.99)

L’Oréal Paris EverStyle Volume Root Lifting Spray ($6.99)

L’Oréal Paris Elnett Satin Extra Strong Hold Unscented Hairspray ($14.99

Sarah Michelle Gellar (MAKEUP)

Makeup Artist: Jake Bailey

Inspiration: The inspiration for this look was Sarah’s Monique L’huillier blue and white gown (which was chosen by Sarah’s two year old daughter). For the night, Jake wanted to make the eyes the main focus to complement the bold color of the dress.

Step-by-Step How-To:

To start, Jake used L’Oréal Paris Extra-Intense Carbon Black Eyeliner to rim and define the top and bottom lash lines. Next, Jake blended two shades of L’Oréal Paris Infallible Eye Shadow in Midnight Blue and Sultry Smoke – using his fingertip, Jake gently blended both shades and used them outward and upward to create a smokey effect. To accentuate Sarah Michelle’s lashes he coated them with L’Oréal Paris Voluminous False Fiber Lashes Mascara in Blackest Black. He perfected her skin by buffing a dime size dollop L’Oréal Paris True Match Super-Blendable Makeup in Caramel Beige over Sarah Michelle’s entire face and finished it with a dusting of Guerlain Mineral Powder in Les Violettes. Jake used a powder bronzer from Nars in Laguna to warm her complexion and brightened her cheeks with a swirl of a shimmery coral blush called from Benefit in Coralista on the apples. He lined Sarah Michelle’s lips and filled them in with a nude liner called from Urban Decay in wallflower. Jake finished the look by applying L’Oréal Paris Infallible 8hr plumping gloss in plumping pink to add shine and dimension. For her body he mixed equal parts AHAVA mineral body lotion and M.A.C. strobe cream to add a healthy sheen to her shoulders arms and decolletage

Products Used:

L’Oréal Paris Extra-Intense Carbon Black Eyeliner ($8.95)

L’Oréal Paris Infallible Eye Shadow in Midnight Blue & Sultry Smoke ($9.99)

L’Oréal Paris Voluminous False Fiber Lashes Mascara in Blackest Black ($9.95)

L’Oréal Paris True Match Super-Blendable Makeup in Soft Ivory ($10.95)

L’Oréal Paris Infallible 8HR Plumping Gloss in Plumping Pink ($9.99)

Matrix celeb stylist Mark Townsend styled Natalie Portman for the Gotham Awards on Monday night and she looked amazing!!

To get Natalie Portman’s asymmetrical side bun for the 19th annual Gotham Independent Film Awards, Matrix celebrity stylist Mark Townsend sprayed Biolage Bodifying Spray Gel in Natalie’s damp hair and blow dried it with a medium round brush. Next, he took 2 to 3 inch sections of hair and sprayed each with Vavoom Gold Heat Iron-In Control, wrapping the hair around a 1 inch curling iron.

“It was a rainy evening so I used the Vavoom Iron-In Control to keep Natalie’s hair from getting frizzy in the humidity. And, to give her hair some extra texture, I took a small amount of Vavoom Design Pulse Glow to Pieces Shine Wax in my hands and then raked it through her hair.” Next, Mark gathered Natalie’s hair into a ponytail behind her left ear and then braided the ponytail and secured it with an elastic at about 2 inches from the ends. Once the braid was secured, heI looped the ponytail around the base and secured it with a few bobby pins. To a glamorous finishing touch, Mark put a bobby pin from Jennifer Behr at the top of the bun.

For the New York premiere of “Julie & Julia,” Matrix celebrity hairdresser, Mark Townsend, wanted Amy’s hair to be modern and glamorous to match her Carolina Herrera gown. “I’ve been very inspired lately by hairstyles from the 80s with lots of volume,” said Townsend.

Mark started by spraying Biolage volumatherapie Bodifying Spray Gel into Amy’s damp hair…

…and blow dried it with a medium size Spornette Mixed Bristle round brush to get a good deal of volume in her hair. Next, he set her hair with hot rollers, making sure to wrap the hair around the roller from roots to ends to give it a nice wave. Once the hair was cool, he removed the rollers and brushed out her hair with a flat brush, parting it to the side. To add some texture and shine, he sprayed Biolage Shine Endure Spritz into her hair and gave it a scrunch.

Lastly, he sprayed down any flyaway hair with Vavoom ShapeMaker hairspray…

“For the Los Angeles screening of ‘Julie & Julia,’ I was inspired by beauty shots from the 80s that I’ve collected over the years, very Carol Alt,” Townsend comments.

He added Vavoom Gold Heat Blow-In Volume Protective Lotion to Amy’s damp hair…

…and blow dried it with a Mason Pearson brush, lifting the roots for some height and keeping the ends straight. To add some texture to the hair,

…he then rubbed Vavoom Loosely Defined Texture Cream into his hands and then raked them through Amy’s hair. “I love the way it makes the hair super shiny and piece-y looking.”

Prosuct used:

Biolage volumatherapie Bodifying Spray Gel
Biolage Shine Endure Spritz
Vavoom ShapeMaker
Vavoom Gold Heat Blow-In Volume Protective Lotion

Mark Townsend is one of the most talented celebrity hairstylists today. Mark worked with the beautiful locks of Reese Witherspoon, Penelope Cruz, Rachel Weiz, and Natalie Portman. In this interview Mark talks about some of the biggest breaks in his career, his experience as Matrix’s Celebrity Hairstylist, and to what he attribute his success.

Mark Townsend.

What was your biggest break as a professional hair stylist?
I’ve really had many big breaks so far in my career. I graduated cosmetology school and got my license in Lakeland, Florida. I knew I wanted to work in fashion so I moved to NY and got a job as a hair assistant at the Oribe Salon, where I really learned how to treat hair. I ventured out of the salon and spent 4 years assisting some of the biggest hairstylists in the field, including 2 years with Sally Hershberger, who then referred me to work on the film Vanilla Sky with Tom Cruise, Penelope Cruz, and Cameron Diaz. Filming took me to Los Angeles and I met my agent Lisa Walker who convinced me to stay in LA after the film wrapped. That’s when Tom Cruise and Penelope Cruz started booking me for photo shoots and jobs all around the world.

What have been some of your most memorable celebrity collaborations?
Everyday is a new collaboration, that’s what I love about my job. I love talking to the client as well as makeup artists and stylists to create a look. Of course working with Reese Witherspoon for the 2007 Golden Globes and Oscars was an amazing collaboration with fantastic results which shows sometimes simpler is better. Another collaboration I really loved was Natalie Portman for the 2006 Golden Globes when she had very short hair. Natalie has curly hair, so I had to spend hours straightening her hair with a specially made flat iron for short hair, but it was worth the effort because she looked magical on the red carpet.

Actress Reese Witherspoon.

One of my favorite people to collaborate with is Rachel Weisz. She is so inspiring to work with. Every time we work together on photo shoots or red carpet events we spend time really talking about our inspirations and what tone we want to set. Sometimes on shoots we even create characters together and decide what kind of hair that character should have. We share an appreciation for texture and we can talk about hair forever, which I love. When I look at my portfolio, my favorite photos are always ones with Rachel because it’s the time I get to experiment and just “play”.

As Matrix’s Celebrity Stylist, what hair care products from this line
do you swear by?
Matrix makes the best hair care and styling products available, so I’m very happy I get to work with them. I’ve seen such great changes in my clients hair after I set them up with the right Matrix shampoos and conditioners to take home with them. I love the Biolage volumatherapie Bodifying Spray Gel and Amplify Full Body Texturizer. I cannot live without Vavoom Gold Heat Iron-In Control Protective Dry Mist! This is the product I used to create Reese’s straight, sleek, shiny hair for the Globes. You spray the hair with this, then run a flat iron over the hair and it seals the hair and fights against humidity. I also love the Vavoom Freezing Spray. On photo shoots, we have to do several different hairstyles, and this spray gives great hold and never flakes and gets cake-y. Every style I create is finished with the Biolage Shielding Shine Mist. It gives the hair amazing shine without weighing down the hair and its great for touch ups through out the day. And, my latest obsession is the new Biolage Cooling Mint Oil Control Treatment – it totally revives a blowout and I think it works better than dry shampoos to absorb oil and refresh the hair.

What advice can you give for choosing the right brush for our hair?
I always use the same brushes: Mason Pearson for detangling and blowing out bangs and Spornett mixed bristle round brushes for blowouts. The mixed bristles grip the hair and create enough tension to get the hair really smooth without pulling on the hair.

To what do you attribute your success as a celebrity hair stylist?
I have a really good agent!

Mark Townsend was the behind Cate Blanchett’s soft waves and has the scoop on how to get this simple yet beautiful hairstyle. Townsend has been working with Blanchett for nearly four years, so it doesn’t take long for the pair to decide on the perfect style for big red carpet events.

As soon as Cate tried her stunning Balenciaga gown for the Screen Actors Guild Awards, the entire fashion and beauty team agreed that hair should be down and simple to not overpower the intricate gown.

to achieve the look, Mark first took Cate’s damp hair and applied Biolage Hydro-Foaming Styler ($14) all over to add a little texture, and blow-dried her hair with a medium round brush. When the hair was completely dry, Mark used a one inch HAI Elite curling iron, taking random sections of hair from one to three inches in size sections of hair, and wrapping them around the iron. According to Mark-the trick to getting perfect waves and curls is to never actually open the iron, just wrap the hair around it while closes. When finished, Mark rubbed Biolage smooththerapie Smoothing Serum ($14) in the palms of the hands and raked it through Cate’s hair to soften the curls into soft, loose waves and blend the curled pieces with the straighter pieces of hair. To finish, Mark used Biolage Complete Control Hairspray ($15) to softly set the look so it lasted all night.
