Celebrity hairstylist David Babaii began the 2012 award season by focusing on pre-red carpet preparation of the hair prior to styling. According to David, “First, we created a change in Nicole’s hair color opting for a lighter strawberry blonde. To achieve true tonal color while improving the condition of the hair use IT&LY HAIRFASHION’s Colorly 20/20 Professional Hair Color (www.italyhairfashion.com).”

How to get Nicole Kidman’s hairdo at the 2012 Golden Globes

As David reveals, “The style inspiration for Nicole’s look was my take on a modern day Veronica Lake“. To style Nicole’s hair, David began with Pure Shampoo and Conditioner by IT&LY HAIRFASHION to maintain her hair color balance while hydrating with pure botanicals. Next, he applied a small amount of the silicone free Miracle Oil Hair Elixir by David Babaii (www.miracleoilhairelixir.com) to add additional shine and protect the hair from thermal damage. To dry, he used a small round brush to create an ultra smooth finish while bumping the ends under. To complete this “Veronica Lake” look, David used a large barrel curling iron, wrapping only the bottom portion of the section around the barrel to create soft natural waves. To finish, he created a side part and lifted the root area with IT&LY HAIRFASHION’s Pure Volumizing Eco Hair Spray, lightly spritzing the ends for a long lasting hold.

Celebrity Hairstylist David Babaii created this “Beach Romantic” hairstyle for Nicole Kidman for the 2011 Film Independent Spirit Awards held on February 26th, 2011. The event was held at Santa Monica Beach serving as a perfect location for this look.

How To Get Nicole Kidman’s Hairstyle:

After washing and gently towel drying, apply Couture Colour Pequi Oil Treatment (now available at www.sephora.com) to nourish and protect the hair against thermal styling. Next, dry the hair thoroughly, applying additional Couture Colour Pequi Oil Treatment to serve as a UV protector against the sun and drying winds.

After applying a small amount of the Pequi Oil to the hair, divide hair into 4 parts: top, sides and back leaving the nape area free. Starting at the nape area and taking small sections one at a time, comb the hair before starting. Depending on the size of the wave or curl you desire, wrap the bottom half of the section around 1-3 fingers creating a large pin-curl type curl. Using the IT&LY HAIRFASHION Digital Styling Iron, take the open flat iron and carefully place the curl inside and clamp down, holding for 10-15 seconds. Repeat if the curl is large or hair is thick so you have covered the entire diameter of the curl. Clip the curl and proceed to the next. If necessary apply additional Pequi Oil. It is light weight and will not weigh the hair down. After completing the entire head, remove the clips and allow the curls to relax and fall naturally into place. Apply additional Pequi Oil to your hands and use your fingers to brush waves into place. If you wish, spray with a light hold styling spray.

Celebrity Hairstylist David Babaii Presents His “Style How To” for Nicole Kidman at the 17th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Modern elegance was David Babaii’s inspiration for Nicole Kidman’s SAG red carpet look.

Starting with clean hair, David applied his new favorite must have product called Couture Colour Pequi Oil Treatment to her entire head. It is rich in moisture-restoring antioxidants, Vitamin A, E, proteins and lipids.

The Pequi Oil Treatment instantly absorbs and won’t weigh hair down. Next, he blow dried Nicole’s hair with the IT&Y HAIRFASHION Ionic Dryer that supplies super-fast drying power along with a large round brush to achieve a sleek straight finish. After the hair was dried, he gently back combed the top and sides for volume and then smoothed the surface. To begin the up-do, he swept the hair gently over creating a faux side-part and brining the rest of the hair to the center back and securing with a band just at the top of the nape. David wrapped the hair into an un-structured Chignon and securing with bobby pins. The secret was not to over comb or smooth the hair but to allow the hair to create a soft natural look. To finish, he used additional Pequi Oil to her bang area to define strands. For added glamour, David added a subtle decorative clip to the side.

The inspiration celebrity hairstylist David Babaii used in creating this years’ 2011 Golden Globes red carpet looks for both Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock drew from vintage hairstyles from the 60′s and 70′s. His predictions for this years’ award season is the use of natural textures and waves, creating healthy and shiny hair while simplifying how to get the look by using only 1 product and the finest styling tools.

Nicole Kidman

Celebrity hairstylist David Babaii created Nicole’s look with a 70′s feel. To achieve this look, he applied a small amount Couture Colour Pequi Oil Treatment (David is the first to use this “new” product: available March 2011) to her damp hair. David created a full side part and sectioned the hair for control. His favorite method is to divide the head into 4 sections (top, sides, back leaving the nape area your starting point). With the finest Italian made blow dryer by IT&LY HAIRFASHION and a medium round brush, David wanted to demonstrate that you can achieve straight hair while infusing volume by using only a blow dryer. After drying each section straight, he applied an additional amount of Couture Colour Pequi Oil Treatment to the lower portion of her hair. He divided the strands into 6 large sections and wrapping each one around a round brush. Each section was given a blast of hot air to create the curl followed by a shot of cool air to set the curl in place. Gently he released the curl creating soft defined waves.

Sandra Bullock

The 60′s took the lead on Sandra Bullock’s look with creating a full bang and textured ends. Celebrity hairstylist David Babaii applied a small amount Couture Colour Pequi Oil Treatment to her damp hair. After blow drying her hair straight with a paddle brush, David sectioned the hair separating the bang area first then clipping the sides and back. Starting at the nape he re-applied an additional amount of Couture Colour Pequi Oil Treatment to each section creating the maximum amount of shine while flat ironing the hair completely straight with IT&LY HAIRFASHION’S Digital Flat Iron. Using a digital control allows the proper temperature to achieve the best results. For the bang area, he flat ironed them by turning the iron slightly under creating a soft cupping affect. To finish he applied some of the oil to his hands warming slightly and running his hands over the top to smooth fly-a-ways and define the piecey texture to the ends.

About Couture Colour Pequi Oil Treatment:

Derived from the Pequi fruit, known for centuries as the beauty secret of the Amazon Rainforest comes Pequi Oil Treatment. It is rich in moisture-restoring anti-oxidants; Vitamin A, E, proteins and lipids, reviving even the driest, color treated, and chemically straightened hair while keeping color vibrant with a special UV filter. This treatment also tames frizz, mends split ends, and gives incredible softness and shine. Instantly absorbing Pequi Oil won’t weigh hair down. Perfect for all hair types, this alcohol free formula can be used every day.

Nicole Kidman Grammy’s Hair How-To. The Hair Tutorial.

Celebrity hairdresser David Babaii created this romantic and elegant up-do to emphasize Nicole’s beautiful bone structure and Prada dress design. He began by spraying her entire head with David Babaii for WildAid Bohemian Beach Spray, scrunching into her hair for body, lift and texture. Next, he dried her hair using a large round brush concentrating on the root area for maximum lift.

Once dry, he divided tresses into 4 sections (top, sides and back leaving the nape area free). Using the H2Pro 300SE Styling Iron, he created “ribbon curls” by taking small “V” shaped partings. To achieve, wrap the hair around and inside the styling iron close to the scalp area and pull the iron down (similar to curling ribbon). After curling the entire head, he applied some David Babaii for WildAid Hair Polish into his hands, using his fingers to loosen the curls from the mid-section to the ends only.

This is done as to not disturb the texture at the top and crown area. Next, he carefully created a side part and again using his fingers to gently roll and twist hair. Pick up large sections as you continue to circle to the other side of the head and pin where needed. Finish into a messy bun and secure with additional pins. At the top area finger comb the bang area into a natural falling wave. For a long but natural lasting hold, he used David Babaii for WildAid Mise en Plis Light Styling Spray.

I’m excited to share with you my interview with Amy Bailey who has begun to make her mark within Hollywood’s demanding movie stars. Amy can be seen in the star-studded movie, “Nine” along side Nicole Kidman, Penelope Cruz, and Kate Hudson. Up next for the actress, she will be playing the Hatteress in Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland.”

Amy Bailey

In this interview Amy Bailey tells Marta Walsh about how it all began for her in Hollywood. Her role in the film “Nine” and what was it like working with its director Rob Marshall. How one day she took Penelope Cruz and her sister to see the Royal Ballet perform. Her latest acting role in ”Alice in Wonderland”, also staring in this film Johnny Depp. Future plans, and of course, style and beauty secrets!

Marta Walsh: Where did you grow up and where is home for you?
Amy Baliey: I grew up in a coastal town called Corpus Christi, in South Texas. I loved going to the beach right after school. Now I divide my time between London and L.A.

MW: How did you decide on a career in showbiz, and what were some of your first breaks?
AB: I was a professional ballerina by 17yrs old, so I guess being onstage always felt pretty natural. My parents couldn’t believe that as a teenager I would skip out parties because I had ballet class the next morning. It kept me out of trouble, for the most part

Three years ago I decided to transition to musical theatre and was fortunate to land my very first audition. It was understudying “Ulla” in “The Producers” – a big West End show in London. The casting team took a chance on me that I could do the lead as a singer and I was thrilled to rise to the challenge. Right after that show I got the lead role in “Oklahoma“, so I feel grateful that people believed I could make the transition.

MW: How did you land the role of Guido’s Showgirl in film “Nine”? What was it like working with director Rob Marshall and the rest of the cast?
AB: “Nine” auditioned thousands of girls from London, LA, NYC, and Rome. We had over 400 people in my audition and it was a grueling 2 days of elimination rounds. It was nerve-racking – everyone wanted to be in this movie and we all knew there were only a handful of spots available.

When I got the call from my agent I was in a library but I still squawked outloud. We filmed for 5 months in London. Rob Marshall is incredible. Very zen but totally in control of his vision. I think Catherine Zeta-Jones was quoted as saying she would read the phonebook for Rob and I am inclined to agree!

We had loads of rehearsals and I got to work very closely with our stars. Funnily enough, they were more nervous than we were as they all had to sing and dance. Daniel told me he was “terrified” of the dancing! You never imagine someone like Daniel Day-Lewis being scared of anything, but they were all working so hard to master things that I’ve been doing since I was 5. It’s all about perspective, I guess.

I loved seeing the “real” Nicole, Penelope, Kate, Daniel etc. These actors are so famous that they can’t do the things all of us take for granted. I took Penelope and her sister to see the Royal Ballet perform, and in public she was gracious, but she had to be much more guarded because everyone was gawking at her. It was interesting seeing both sides of fame.

MW: What have you learned from your acting role in “Alice in Wonderland”? Did you get to meet Johnny Depp (you know, it’s a dream of mine)?
AB: Acting in “Alice” was a new experience for sure! We were basically acting to nothing as the sets are all CGI. It’s a very good experience though – you really have to use your imagination, but then be consistant for the many takes. At times it was chaos. We would role and then Tim would have to yell “Cut!” for the 10th time because someone had run through the imaginary unicorn. Johnny had already filmed most of his scenes so he wasn’t around much, but I saw some of his takes and he is brilliant! Perfectly cast.

MW: What would be your next dream acting role?
AB: Gosh, it is hard to choose. I adore the fantasy genre, like “Alice” or “Avatar“. It would be a dream to work with Peter Jackson or Darren Aronofsky. But I also love comedy and indie films. Charlie Kaufman writes very cool scripts.

MW: Which actor/actress inspires you the most?
AB: Actors that morph into their characters inspire me the most. I can never predict Cate Blanchett. Her performance as Bob Dylan in “I’m Not There” is sublime. Marion Cotillard, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Daniel (of course!), Sam Rockwell, and Catherine Keener consistantly give true performances.

MW: What is next for Amy Bailey?
AB: Right now I am in love with The Goundlings! I’m doing long-form comedy improv there which is something every actor should try. It basically kills your ego, but that’s a good thing And it makes every audition you have a breeze ’cause you’ve pretty much already died a thousand deaths when doing improv. You learn to be comfortable in the so-called “grey area”, where you have no idea what is going to come out of your mouth next. Quite liberating. I adore Christopher Guest and his team who put together “Best in Show” and “Waiting for Guffman“. How fun to improv an entire film.

Amy Bailey on Style & Beauty Secrets:

I keep my hair beautiful thanks to…
Krill oil capsules and eating sardines. You may say yuck, but you can’t beat Omega-3 in your diet for great hair.

My favorite skincare products are…
I do a mix of things. Right now I am loving Ziva toner followed by SK-II Vitamin C serum, then moisturizing with Weleda Wild Rose day cream.

I get my eyelashes looking long, full, and sexy using…
A heated eyelash curler and Lancome mascara.

The best lip-gloss I ever owned…
Was a homemade organic lip balm. Given to me as a gift. I’m almost out and very scrimpy about using the last little bit of it.

My signature fragrance is…
The Body Shop’s Pure Rosehip Oil. I like fragrances that smell like real flowers. I can’t stand strong stinky perfume.

The one beauty product you will always find in my purse is…
Lip balm. I have a habit of chewing my lips so keeping lip balm on them helps me stop.

Beauty is all about…
It’s all about love baby! And it’s not corny to say so…we all know those people who are so beautiful because they are brimming with love and joy. Physical beauty is all relative anyway, but most of us can agree on what makes a beautiful personality.

I describe my personal style as…and my favorite fashion designers are…
Well I would call my personal style “vintage” or “eclectic”, but I have to admit many of my friends say I dress like a Grandma. I don’t know what it is – polyesther prints just move me. Seriously though, I love good tailoring and vintage cuts from the 40′s and 50′s are so flattering. Alexander McQueen and Zac Posen are 2 of my favorites.

The sound, restaurant, and movie I love the most…
I love the sound Gospel choirs, and of a big, booming, live symphony orchestra. One of my favorite restaurants is “Rules” in London. It is the city’s oldest restaurant and it is very posh darling. I love the movie “Goonies”. I never get tired of seeing it.

One or two things some people may not know about Amy Bailey…
I have a bright red birthmark on the palm of my hand, and I haven’t met anyone else who has one there. I can also play “Oh Susanna” on the harmonica with my nose. No really, my dad does it too.

GET THE LOOK: Nicole Kidman’s hairstyle at the 2010 SAG Awards

Celebrity hairdresser David Babaii achieved Nicole Kidman’s red carpet look by combining eras of vintage fabric textures with the perfect epoch red hair color. According to David, “Nicole Kidman always inspires me but for the 2010 SAG Awards, her beautiful skin tone and breathtaking beauty took the lead. The right style and hair color became my main objective.” David fell in love with this unique period wig that had various tones of ginger.

In order to achieve the perfect color match, David sought out the master talents of celebrity hair colorist Lorri Goddard-Clark. Lorri created Nicole’s rich new color, while David created the perfect texture needed to enhance this natural but classic “Bohemian” look.

The Color: Lorri Goddard-Clark matched the vintage wig selected by David Babaii by utilizing a combination of deposit-only color, her signature foil-out reverse highlighting technique and a sulfate-free glaze. Nicole’s hair was transformed from a medium blonde into a rich, warm Gingered Toffee Red to enhance her azure eyes and porcelain skin.

According to Lorri, “It was truly an honor to work with David: he is a genius. I was thrilled to collaborate with him on this look for Nicole Kidman.”

The Style: David gently towel dried the hair and sprayed Bohemian Beach Spray throughout. Next, he gently rough dried the hair moving his hands in various directions to create texture. Once dry, he fashioned a center part and divided tresses into 4 sections (sides, back crown & nape). Starting at the nape area, he alternated between 1″ and 1 ½” ceramic curling irons, taking “V” shaped partings. He then wrapped hair around the inside of the barrel, holding for 10 seconds then gently releasing the curl. With each alternating curl, David slid his fingers up the curl to gently create a soft back combing effect and enhanced texture. After finishing the entire head, David used his fingers and added extra Bohemian Beach Spray to loosen the curls and highlight the richness of the hair color.

Nicole Kidman’s dress at the 2010 SAG Awards was Oscar De La Renta. Marta Walsh says: Great dress, just NOT on Kidman. I didn’t like how the red hair color matched the dress. It was too much. I love you Oscar though, and you Nicole:)
