The heat was on in Miami both outdoors and on the runway at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Swim 2011. Rodney Cutler and his team of top-notch stylists from Cutler once again provided the hottest trends to be seen at six of the shows, including Betsey Johnson and White Sands Australia.

Show: Betsey Johnson. The Hairstyle: Edgy and editorial Braids. “The punchy, bright swimwear needed a fun and editorial up-do to go with it,” says Cutler/Redken Stylist Ryan Suhr, the lead stylist for the show.

How To: Hair Tutorial

1. Spray Cutler Volumizing Spray onto damp, clean hair

2. Section hair into two asymmetrical sections, brushing the top half into a tight ponytail at the right recession of the hairline, and repeating at the bottom half by brushing it into a tight ponytail at the bottom left of the nape

3. At the top section, create two fishtail braids, loosening the braids by lightly pulling at the sides, then wrapping the braids around each other and pin, replicating the look of a flower

4. Repeat Step 3 with the bottom section

5. Finish the look with Redken 23 Forceful Super Strength Finishing Spray

Show: White Sands Australia. The Hairstyle: Beach goddess blow out. “To compliment the beautiful, feminine prints, I wanted to give the girls an editorial, edgy look with a classic twist,” says Cutler/Redken Stylist Kelsy Osterman, the lead stylist for the show.

Spray damp hair with Cutler Volumizing Spray, and quick dry product into hair with a blow dryer to create a base of texture

Starting at the nape of the neck, lightly spray Redken 09 Workforce Flexible Volumizing Spray from roots to ends, and gently backcomb each section

Curl each section and set it with a clip, curling all the way up to the head, and repeatingly backcomb closer at the top of the head

Create a center part, leaving no volume at the top

Take out the clips and finger-comb the curls into place

2. To create your ponytail, apply quick dry 18 instant finishing spray as you are brushing the pre dried hair up into a high-top ponytail.

3. Create a high-top ponytail that is clean but not slick allowing some of the texture in the hair to be visible.

4. From the ponytail, twist tightly into a high knot pinning as you get to the base and allowing the ends of the ponytail to poke out. This is to give the appearance of a do it yourself homemade look.

Irina Shabayeva, the season six winner of Project Runway, debuted her Fall 2010 collection on Saturday, February 13th, 2010, during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at SIR Stage 37. Kate Bazazian has worked as the makeup key for Irina’s show and she talks to Talking Makeup about the makeup look and inspiration!

“It went through a few different ones until we settled on what walked down the runway. The look started much softer in effect, but with the same ethereal earth tones. A few days before the show, Irina said to me “if we’re gonna make a statement, lets really make it” and that opened it up to a lot more to ideas I had floating around. The line itself was very inspired by flight and what better way to capture that than by making the makeup look as though it was put on by the quill of a feather as well.

In the end I went for a neutral color palette and really played up the eyes with liner. The concept was to make it look like 2 strokes of a calligrapher’s pen around the models’ eyes and that’s exactly how it looked! At the end of May, 2009, Redken hosted editors and bloggers at the Exchange to an up-close and personal look at the new Hair Files series. The new Create Curls video was debuted and Redken Media Marketing Senior Manager Corrie Rudin and Rodney Cutler explained why Redken is producing and promoting these videos and why it is so important to teach consumers how to style their own hair in-between salon visits.
