Victoria Rowe is a Celebrity Makeup Artist who had worked with Lady Gaga, Keri Hilson, Ashley Greene, and now Sarah Carter from the new Spielberg series, “Falling Skies”. I’ve met Victoria one day backstage at LA Fashion Week few years a go and I must say she is one cool and talented lady. I’m now pleased to share with Victoria’s makeup tips especially for summer.

Victoria’s TOP TEN Makeup Items

Everyone NEEDS to have at home or in their purse right now!

1. Oil free facial moisturizer I prefer ALBA Oil-free Green Tea Moisturizer, Avalon Organics Lavender Moisture cream for sensitive skin, or BLISS SPA Oxygen +Vitamin C Cream (gel). Any of these will combat dryness without oil and, dare I say, help get rid of most every kind of ACNE in a woman, girl, or man of any age.

The more water and vitamin C your skin gets, the faster it will clean itself out without the use of drying acne treatments and harsh medications. This is especially true for those who live in low humidity (ACNE in DRY) states like California, Arizona, Nevada, Utah, New Mexico, Arizona, Texas, and Oklahoma. For ACNE in HUMID climates try Mario Badescu Drying Lotion or cream at night, and Murad Anti Acne Concealer during the day.

Pretty cool, right?

2. Sunblock with an SPF of 30 or higher. There are so many. Stick with organic and natural ones. The best sun block I have ever used comes from www.eminenceorganics.com called the Tropical Vanilla body cream and the Tropical Vanilla Face cream, both with SPF 32. I LOVE this!!! Do yourself a favor and order both for the summer from the website, or find the spa which carries it nearest you. They also have an SPF 30 Sun Defense Mineral powder that comes in a convenient wand you can throw in your purse or makeup bag! Gotta have it!

3. Face Primer If you’re afraid of primers, or you think they all feel oily and like a ball of silicone, search no more! The only one I really recommend is POP BEAUTY’s Paraben free Face Magnet Primer (www.ulta.com). This unique primer has a zinc base making it look and feel like a sunblock. It will firm skin, calm redness with zinc and licorice, block UV rays, and shrink PORES with CAFFEINE! It controls oil (for oily skin), locks in moisturizer (for dry skin), and holds your makeup in place ALL DAY LONG! Originally made for sensitive skin and Rosacea sufferers, Face Magnet is a head above all the rest. EVERYONE NEEDS THIS PRIMER!

4. A great Mascara I’d stay away from drugstore brands becauseof all the alcohol and chemicals in them which can lead to losing your lashes! Some of my favorites are TARTE’s Lights, Camera, Lashes (or Splashes for Waterproof), KAT VON D (sephora), POP Beauty Lash Wow (or Lash Kapow for Waterproof), and TOO FACED Lash Glam. You can actually swim and sweat in Lights, Camera, Splashes or Lash Kapow (give them plenty of time to dry first) and these babies will not come off!

5. Waterproof Eyeliner (that’s really waterproof) This is a tricky one. There are very few eye liners that are Vegan and made for the wetness of the eye, in the rim or on top, except for POP BEAUTY’s INLINER. It comes in Blue (dark), Black, and Green (hazel). For the top of the lashline I recommend making a cute cat eye with STILAs new Sparkle Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner; this one will never disappoint and it will not move until you take it off. Urban Decay’s metallic pencils are great but stay away from Zero (black)because it tends to smear when wet. What color is best for me you ask? I like Blues and Purples for green eyes, Copper and Bronze for Blue eyes, and either one for brown eyes. Experiment and have some fun this summer. Try a fun color on the inner rim, and black or a bronze on the upper lash line.

6. Tinted Moisturizer These will all most likely have an SPF, but you can never have too much. My favorite is TARTE’s Smooth Operator SPF 20 natural tinted moisturizer. It comes in many colors and the coverage is medium light and just enough to even out skintone!

7. High Definition Setting Powder How do you know that it’s high def? These translucent powders can be pressed or loose (I prefer pressed for me, loose for jobs) and they usually have a name like “Close up setting powder”, or “No Show”, or even “High Def”. I prefer Smashbox Photo Set Finishing Powder with SPF 15 (you can never have too much SPF ladies!). This is an invisible setting powder that mattifies on contact without any powdery residue. Also, Too Faced has a great loose setting powder called Primed and Poreless with an awesome finish! For my own purse I like POP Beauty’s No Show No Shine Compact Powder #2 (both at Ulta.com).

8. High Def Liquid Foundation Again you ask, what is high def? Some people say that it refers to products made for high definition film, tv, and photography. For us it just means that it doesn’t show or collect on your skin! It must look seamless and natural. Keep in mind, to produce a natural effect you need to wear primer underneath any foundation! I have several favorites, so here goes: Laura Mercier Oil free or Moisturizing Liquid Foundation, Too Faced Close Up liquid foundation, and CARGO’s Blue Ray (cute name)Powder Foundation are my faves.

9. A nice Bronzer This is so much fun for your whole face! There are more brands than I care to mention, but go to an Ulta or Sephora store and try them on to choose for yourself. I recommend something mineral based and paraben free. Some have a shiny metallic finish, some are matte or waterproof, and some are semi-matte with a little glow (I like a multicolored bronzer with pink, peach, and mocha brown myself). Remember that bronzers can be worn on your eyelids too instead of eye shadow! Easy Peasy!

10. A Hydrating, Sexy Lipcolor in Peach, Nude, or Pink My new favorite is Bare Escentuals Pretty Amazing lip color…OMG this is the creamiest, sexiest lipcolor imaginable! Free Will is the best Nude I’ve ever seen, but there are other great colors too. This product is a cross between a lipstick and a gloss with high pigment, safe ingredients, high shine, and it’s longwearing! Love!

HAVE AN AWESOME AND GORGEOUS SUMMER!!!

Love,

Victoria

POP Beauty Paints LA Fashion Week at the Maggie Barry Spring/Summer 2009 Fashion Show!

Pop Beauty London Style: Pop Beauty, the British cult makeup brand encapsulates all that makes London “Swing”; Silky, long-lasting, uber flattering textures in punchy, punky must-have shades. Pop pushes the boundaries and creates trends with its maverick style. Pop appeals to all, Pop is a state of mind, an appreciation of award winning makeup and an innate sense of style.

Pop Beauty was proud to collaborate on Maggie Barry’s Spring/Summer 2009 collection for LA Fashion Week, to create one-of-e-kind look for her show.

“The inspiration came from Maggie’s request for a “Circus Theme” and to make the girls look like “Beautiful Dolls, but individual”, so I searched for “Dolls and Doll looks” everywhere. What I came up with was to give each girl a different kind of Doll-we had a “Marilyn Monroe” doll, a “Grace Jones” doll, a “Bratz doll” doll, a Pam Andersen as “Barb Wire” doll, several “Asian China Dolls”…says Victoria Rowe, a Pop Beauty makeup artist.

How to get the Maggie Barry makeup look with Pop Beauty?

The following Pop Beauty products were used to create the unique looks:

Blush Cake in Pretty In Pink Blush to make that very Baby Pink, doll-like cheek blended out with iridescent white and Glow Belle Face Kit over them to make the cheeks really glow!

Day To Play Eye shadow kits, as well as Lid Neon, and Eye Cakes in Pastel Greens, Pinks, and Blues, for the lid only, with iridescent white from Glow Belle under the brow. A thick black line on the top lid only with the In-Liner in Black.

Many girls had individual designs of stars, hearts, and peace symbols drawn in black eyeliner and decorated with glitter and crystals on their cheeks as well!

Pink Ribbon Gloss and Heart-Shaped lip stains finished the baby-doll looks.

I met up with celebrity makeup artist Victoria Rowe backstage at the Maggie Barry fashion show during LA Fashion Week. Victoria gave me a sneak peek to the makeup look for the runway which was achieved by Pop Beauty!

Here is a video of my interview with Victoria Rowe where she explains the makeup look backstage at the Maggie Barry show during LA Fashion Week, using makeup products by Pop Beauty. It was super loud backstage since it was in a club, so the video is also a bit loud. But, you can see the model’s look wearing all Pop Beauty makeup and few tips here and there.

Want a flirty, funky shade to make your eyes pop? Coming right up. How about glittering eyeliner for a night on the town? Consider it done. Pop Beauty’s irresistible range of juicy color fulfills every order-from kiss-worthy lip pouters to eye shadows with a glittery finish to sparkly, all over shimmers that add a delectably enhancing glow to any look. Keep your finger on the beauty pulse and your makeup bag on the cutting edge with Pop Beauty’s deliciously loud, yet totally wearable shades.

Pop Beauty founder Sara Strand has never had a problem getting noticed. From her signature scarlet mane to her extraordinary talent in singing, Strand caught the ear of music executives at Sony at the young age of 11-after she left them singing messages into their answering machines.

Pop Beauty makeup is available in Sephora and Ulta.

QUESTION: Sporty:

Hi, I just wanted to ask you or get an advice. I have a graduation party this week and my gown is black and red, and I have a dark skin, and that party will be on the morning. Can you help me with the makeup? What exactly would be nice to wear with that gown, especially the eye shadow?

I hope you reply soon.

thanks,
Sporty.

ANSWER: Victoria Rowe:

Hey Sporty!

This is fun makeup.

Step 1: First I would grab a shimmery eyeshadow base like “First Base” from Too Faced Cosmetics ($15 at Sephora and Ulta).

Step 2: Then cover the lid on a pale white-pink shimmer like Bare Minerals “Cultured Pearl”.

Step 3: Grab a smoky black or glitter black mineral shadow for the corners (try Corrupted Soul III Loose Eyeshadow-$12.50 online).

Step 4: Then…..my favorite product ever…take “Liquif-Eye” (by Too Faced), a transformer that turns eyeshadow into sweat-proof, smear-proof eyeliner, and dip it all the way into your black shadow and use it as your eyeliner on the top only.

Step 5: Brush on thickening mascara-side to side as well as up and down.

Step 6: Lightly brush gold shimmer or a bronzer all over your cheeks, forehead, and chin and finish with a light, pinkish sheer lipgloss.

That’s what I think would be cute. Don’t use red! It will look too crazy and made-up. You are a gorgeous girl who happens to be wearing red and black, not the other way around. We want to see you!:)-V

International Makeup Artist Trade Show or IMAT.

I have to interrupt my original train of thought for a special story:…..

The International Makeup Artist Trade Show….that’s where I was in Pasadena, CA this weekend. I was demonstrating the Luminess Air Airbrush machine and Mineral, Water-Based Makeup used by the likes of Ve-Johnny Depp’s Makeup Artist for “Pirates of The Caribbean” and “Sweeney Todd”.

Ve was kind enough to show me exactly how she did Johnny Depp’s makeup for Sweeney “Todd” on Sunday using this awesome, quiet, light little machine. Unbelievable. By using a very light, almost white makeup on Johnny’s face as a base, Ve was able to use the Luminess Air machine in a much, much darker shade to create the crazy contours on his cheekbones and chin to give him that ghostlike quality. Followed up by RED eyeliner inside the rim of his eyes which bled out to his bottom lashes to make him especially doom-inspired!

There were many awesome finds at the IMAT show. One of my favorites was “PROS-AIDE” Water-based, non-toxic adhesive for facial hardware (Prosthetic pieces) to replace the very TOXIC Spirit Gum of days gone by.

Try to find these people if you are serious about applying prosthetic pieces, whether it is for a movie or for a school play or Halloween…I suggest we all look for non-toxic alternatives for the old petroleum-based, crappy old glues of the past. Remember-your skin absorbs most of what you put on it!!!!! Try to allow absorption of mostly healthy products if you possibly can. Their website is: www.pros-aide.com .

Another big favorite for Beauty and High-Definition Camera Makeup is the “HD High Definition Powder” from MAKEUP FOREVER PRO LINE made out of pure Silica (a Mineral).

This is the most amazing invisible Translucent Powder I have ever seen and is completely non-toxic, Talc-Free, Paraben and Phthalate-Free. Big SCORE!!!

Also this week I received at a PRE-DAYTIME EMMY Party this Organic, pure, wonderful foundation primer by a new company called EXUBERANCE. It’s called “Miracle Bound (rejoice) Skin-Firming Gel Makeup Primer”. Hard to find but worth it. Made with 70% active organic ingredients.

And finally, I am extremely impressed with the latest TOO FACED lipstick formulas (found at Sephora, Ulta, and Dept Stores).

They are Rich in Color, Moisture (made with Shea Butter and Grapeseed Oil), and are Paraben-free as well. These lipsticks are the ultimate in color and smoothness-you just HAVE to try one!!!

It’s important to combine Glamour and Health as our European Counterparts do. In Europe, many chemicals that we allow in Cosmetics are not allowed because of their link to Breast and other cancers over a period of time. Be aware. Look into Organic and non-Toxic, safe cosmetics (check out the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics-www.safecosmetics.org-for more information).

Thank you for your time! Be Gorgeous and safe!-Love, Victoria.

Victoria Rowe is Talking Makeup’s Celebrity Makeup Artist contributor. Victoria worked with an impressive list of celebrities including: Brittany Murphy, Rosario Dawson, Kimberly Stewart, Shar Jackson, Linda Carter, Matthew Perry and more. With 15 years of experience as a makeup artist and hair stylist Victoria’s work has included fashion shows for major designers, print commercials, television shows, celebrity photo shoots and celebrity appearances, music videos, and short films.

Celebrity Makeup Artist Victoria Rowe.

QUESTION: Michelle asks Victoria Rowe:

Victoria, I Love your bio and experience by the way? Are you an agent for Elite modeling. I was wondering if you worked with them. I’m not at all the tall runway type. More average/even athletic slim multicultural brown/hazel green. The question I ask…is because I’ve heard your name mentioned with Elite…just wondering….if not it’s here, with makeup, and I like the fact I can “see” how you do it, because it is a true art. Thank you in advance.

ANSWER: Victoria Rowe:

Thanks, Michelle. And no, I am not an agent at all. I’m just a Makeup Artist. I have probably have friends who are models with Elite and have worked on many, many shows over the years that had Elite Models in them but that’s about it. Not sure where that reference was made. Anyway, if you’re asking about Makeup for your skin type or color, we’re going to explore all of that in upcoming articles. Just remember the most important thing to keep your face looking gorgeous and sexy is lots of moisturizer and lots of sunscreen. Focus on Moisturizers that contain high concentrations of Vitamin C (especially for acne and scarring) and use at least an SPF 25+ sunscreen this summer. Keep it Glowy and Fresh!!! Enjoy!!!xo-Victoria:)

Also-Michelle-if you are asking about representation for your “type” of look, I can’t really recommend anything without seeing a picture, but it sounds like you might have a great commercial look (maybe SHAPE magazine if you’re athletic), or possibly Beauty (meaning close-up Face-Oriented Modeling). Not all models are extremely tall, but there are height requirements in most agencies. You may want to consider Commercial Acting if you are outgoing and live in an area you would have access to large markets.

Feel free to email us or leave your comments for Victoria Rowe. Victoria will get back to you with an answer as soon as possible.

Happy Friday!
