Devoted to health, wellness, and the trials and triumphs of shape and size, VOGUE’s annual April 2010 tribute to the female form, the Shape Issue, is replete with stories that range from the inspirational to the poignant, but all celebrate a love for life, from model Kim Noorda’s moving account of her struggle with food issues and how, through treatment, she has gained the confidence to let go of the diet demons that controlled her life, to VOGUE Contributing Editor Vicki Woods’s tale of how she finally stood up to smoking and its diktats to live a cigarette-free life and foodie Julie Powell, a lifelong gym-phobe who decides to get fit once and for all. VOGUE also profiles role models like Harvard-educated Kate Dilllon, one of today’s most successful plus-size models, and pixie rocker Janelle Monáe, who may stand a mere five feet but who is by no means short on style or talent.

The model of health itself, Gisele Bündchen is a natural choice to grace the cover of the April Shape Issue. Only six weeks after giving birth, Gisele opens the doors to her Boston home to VOGUE Contributing Editor Joan Juliet Buck and shares intimate details about the birth of her baby boy with New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, her new beauty line developed to empower troubled young girls around the world, and her efforts to save the environment. In a stunning editorial shot by Patrick Demarchelier, the model enjoys the beaches of Costa Rica and shows off her new baby, Benjamin Rein.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE COVER STORY:

Gisele on her baby’s name, Benjamin Rein: “I wanted him to be called River because I wanted something always flowing, immortal. My husband said, ‘There’s no way we’re going to call him River.’ But my father’s name is Reinoldo, so it’s a homage to him. And it’s like water.”

On staying in shape while pregnant: “I did kung fu up until two weeks before Benjamin was born, and yoga three days a week. I think a lot of people get pregnant and decide they can turn into garbage disposals. I was mindful about what I ate, and I gained only 30 pounds.”

On keeping out of the public eye: “I felt like my pregnancy was a sacred moment for me. I stayed in Boston and I didn’t work apart from the contracts I have, and then I only let them use my face.”

On her first time behind the camera since her son was born: “I got to the studio and I felt like I was E.T.—whoa, what’s going on? Hair and makeup? I hadn’t looked at myself in a mirror for a month and a half… Usually, as I walk through the door into that atmosphere, I already feel different. There’s a button that goes On and I’m On. And when I go On, there is almost no me; there is just a character who is doing all this. This time it wasn’t like that… For the first time, I think I actually saw me—the inside—instead of the persona.” Read full story in vogue.com/feature/

For VOGUE’s eighth annual March power issue, writer and actress Tina Fey is the magazine’s standard-bearer. In a candid conversation with Jonathan Van Meter, Fey describes herself as a celebrity flying the flag for “normal.” However, as Anna Wintour notes in her editor’s letter, “there is nothing ordinary about her brilliance, her perceptiveness, or her beauty. Mario Testino and Tonne Goodman’s portfolio of the star captures a woman who fully understands the power of style to elevate the everyday.”

Highlights from the Article
Going Rogue: Ever since her devastatingly funny Sarah Palin impressions, she has for the first time in her life attracted unwanted attention—and hate mail. “People started projecting politics onto me,” she says. “There are people who hate me now because of that.”

“The partisan nature of politics continues to appall me. I’m almost paralyzed by my inability to see things in black-and-white… I felt uncomfortable to be in that discussion. The weird thing is, when Darrell Hammond or Will Ferrell or Dana Carvey did an impersonation of a president, no one assumed it was personal, but because Sarah Palin and I are both women and people think women are meaner to each other, everyone assumed it was personal.”

Normal Girls: “I feel like I represent normalcy in some way. What are your choices today in entertainment? People either represent youth, power, or sexuality. And then there’s me, carrying normalcy.” Pause. “Me and Rachel Ray.”

The Skinny: “People will say, ‘Oh, fashion magazines are so bad, they’re giving girls a negative message’—but we’re also the fattest country in the world, so it’s not like we’re all looking at fashion magazines and not eating. Maybe it just starts a shame cycle: I’m never going to look like that model, so… Chicken McNuggets it is! And conversely, I don’t look at models who are crazy skinny and think I want to look like that, because a lot of them are gigantic, with giant hands and giant feet.”

The Power of Clothes: “I think women dress for other women to let them know what their deal is. Because if women were only dressing for men, there would be nothing but Victoria’s Secret. There would be no Dior.”

Hand-Me-Downs: When she was in grade school, a cousin gave her some hand-me-downs that included a “colonial-lady” Halloween costume. “It consisted of a bonnet,” says Fey, “and a burlap apron and a long skirt. And I would just wear it sometimes after school. As an outfit… It was the Bicentennial! People were excited!”

The VOGUE Cover: Her favorite moment: “I was posing for [Mario Testino] and he was talking from behind the camera and he was like, ‘You have to fliiiirt, darleeeng. You have to bee-leeve you are wuuuurthy to on the cover’ And then at one point he said very quietly, ‘Lift your chin, darling. You are not eighteen.’ And I was like, ‘You probably say that to all the 23-year olds.’” Read full article in vogue.com

VOGUE January 2010, Hello Gorgeous Article on Lara Stone

At five feet ten and a size 4, supermodel Lara Stone has struggled to fit in. Stone is about 2 sizes larger than her modeling peers, but this has not stopped her career from skyrocketing. “Lara Stone has a gorgeous women’s body,” affirms fan Karl Lagerfeld. Stone has appeared in ad campaigns for the likes of Givenchy and has walked the runway for almost every major designer including Marc Jacobs and Balmain.

Lara Stone photographed by Willy Vanderperre

In the article Hello Gorgeous, Vogue recalls the days when stylists came to a shoot armed with pins to make the clothes fit the models and examines the absurdity of the thought that clothes only hang nicely on super-skinny girls (aka coat hangers). The opposite is also true – some clothes look better on bodies with “boobs,” which is why Stone’s career has flourished. Could her unexpected success mean the return of curves? In the January issue of Vogue, Stone opens up to Rebecca Johnson about how difficult it can be to constantly hear how different she is, her methods of coping, and how she views herself now.

Highlights From The Article

On being a size four in a land of zeros:

“It’s depressing when the clothes don’t fit and you are always the odd one out…I was on a shoot last week and the stylist took out this tight corset dress and said, ‘Here, put it on,’ and I was like, ‘Who are you kidding?’ There was no way, so that was very rude of her. It’s like, come on, she’s a woman; whether you’re buying jeans at the mall, or wearing couture, you know what it’s like for clothes not to fit. It’s not an easy kind of rejections, because it’s very personal. It’s you, you’re body. You take it to heart.”

Virginia Smith, Fashion Market Editor of Vogue, on Lara:

“Lara makes clothes look good. It’s refreshing to see her come down the runway. Sometimes I’ll call in a piece, it will arrive, and I‘ll think, Why did I think I liked that? Then I’ll remember, oh, because Lara wore it.”

On trying to lose weight and how it created a whole new set of problems:

“She has tried to lose weight with diet and exercise, but nothing worked: ‘ I even tried pills, but they made my heart race.’ Eventually, Stone admits, she started drinking alcohol to get through the day. Nobody in the business noticed…Stone knew she had a problem. ‘I was waking up shaking, I couldn’t do anything until I had a drink. I hated it. I didn’t like the person I became. Plus, I was looking like absolute shit, waking up with a swollen red face, pimples everywhere.’”

On how she views herself now:

“People still tell me I’m fat, but when I look in the mirror, that’s not what I see.”

“Such a brilliant actress—not like Meryl, but she has that kind of intelligence. That brain is substantial, and if you have that along with a face you can’t take your eyes off, it’s so compelling. It’s rare.”—Diane Keaton on Rachel McAdams

The January issue of Vogue, on newsstands nationwide by December 22, features Rachel McAdams, the star of the highly anticipated Sherlock Holmes. The Canadian actress keeps track of her day by writing in her diary before going to bed. Since she is such a famously private, relatively reclusive star, one can’t help speculating what she writes about. In the style of her Keel’s Simple Diary (with fill-in-the-blanks, multiple choices, and other quirky ways to keep records), Vogue’s Sally Singer gives us a peek inside the mind behind Hollywood’s freshest face.

Highlights from the article:

On working with Lindsay Lohan in Mean Girls:

“I just remember marveling about how much she knew as an actor, how much she understood. She did very few takes and had this naturalness to her. And beyond that, I was 26 at the time. I’d be asked, ‘Where do you go out?’ ” McAdams was the exact opposite of her Mean Girls character, the evil Regina George: “My mother never put an emphasis on looks. She let us grow up on our own time line. She never forced any beauty regimen into my world.” McAdams was teased in high school for not shaving her legs. “ ‘Why didn’t you tell me?’ she asked her mom. Mom: ‘Once you start, there’s no turning back.’ ”

The actress on being green:

“I don’t really desire things, I prefer to spend my money on experiences, on meals or travel. . . . I look at the world through a green lens now. But you can’t make yourself crazy. That feeling of green guilt can be really inhibiting. It’s about a changing mind-set, remembering to turn off the water when you are brushing your teeth.”

McAdams describes her perfect day:

“1995, on the sofa: ‘I grew up watching so much television. I was really into soap operas. I’d begin with Days of our Lives, then Another World, and finish off with General Hospital. And before dinner I’d watch Oprah. I would fake sick all the time to the point where I’d convince myself I was sick. In high school I really didn’t pay attention. I took the bare minimum to get by.”

Frederic Fekkai Partners with CFDA/VOGUE Fashion Fund to host the LA Runway Show for the 2009 Designer Finalists.

While the top designers in America were vying to win the 2009 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Award (which will be announced tonight), what really wowed the crowd were the two hair looks designed by celebrity stylist, Renato Campora for Frédéric Fekkai. As the exclusive beauty partner for the event, the Fekkai team worked closely with Vogue and the 10 Designer Finalists to create two special hairstyles, the Wet Look and the Dry Look, to compliment each of the collections.

Frederic Fekkai’s Lead Stylist, Renato Campora Creates Two Signature Hair Styles with an Emphasis on Texture:

The first look is a sculptural and edgy ponytail. It’s modern, young and sexy. The texture tells a story through the wet and twisted hard hair. Pieces are left in front for an effortless feel, inspired by some of the graphic trends shown in the collections.

To achieve this look:
- Use your hands as styling tools to create this piecey look.
- Apply Fekkai COIFF Extra Control Styling Gel to damp hair and comb through with fingers, no blow dry required.
- Pull hair into textured sections before twisting together into a low ponytail just above the nape of the neck.
- Secure the twist with bobby pins, letting shorter pieces fall to the side.
- Shape the hair into a long sleek ponytail.

Look #2: The Dry Look

The second look is a modern, angelic take on a tousled, bohemian style. It’s dramatic, yet romantic and very wearable. Hair is full and voluminous with an airy soft texture that allows for movement as you walk. Pieces are left in front to frame the face and accentuate the jewelry shown in the collections.

To achieve this look:
- Apply Fekkai COIFF Strong Hold Mousse to damp hair and scrunch with fingers as you blow dry completely to create the wild texture.
- Wrap hair in big sections around twist-ties (fabric curling rods) to create volume at the and soft curl for movement.
- Tease hair at the roots using a fine comb, and apply Fekkai Au Naturel Powder Clean Dry Shampoo to add thickness and extra structure, but no weight.
- Pin the sides to the back of the head and secure with bobby pins.
- To secure height at the crown, finish with a fine mist of Fekkai Full Blown Volume Lifting Hairspray.

The December 2009 issue of VOGUE, on newsstands November 24th, features a stunning Cate Blanchett, as she takes on one of the great dramatic roles of all time: Blanche DuBois in A Streetcar Named Desire. VOGUE writer, Adam Green, says Blanchett “remains a creature of the stage,” and sits down with the self proclaimed “theater geek,” as she opens up about the importance of theater, her career choices and her family.

Highlights From the Article:

On the importance of theater: “In the wake of everything that’s happened in the world in the last eighteen months, we’re thinking about what we’ve lost. So much of the play is about the death of poetry and idealism and hope—the fine, delicate things in our lives, the intangible, ephemeral things in our lives—which theater actually represents, doesn’t it? It’s ephemeral by its very nature. If you’re not there, you miss it. It’s gone.”

On appreciating the sense of stability that staying semi-put and working regular hours has allowed both Blanchett and husband, Andrew Upton, to give their three boys:

“’There are so few experiences in our manicured, nanny-stated existence that have the quality of circus. Theater still does.’ And so, when the boys aren’t playing with friends, they can usually be found playing backstage. ‘They’re always engaged in the family business, so to speak.’”

On career choices: “I’m not very cautious or careful. It’s always been more about having a variety of experiences than any planned trajectory… I think that in a way, projects choose you.”

Actor Geoffrey Rush on Cate Blanchett: “As an actor, you either work off your own personality, and that’s what you’re peddling, or, like Cate, you draw out from the source material all the many dark, mysterious, and conflicting elements of the character that are going to make it engaging and trilling for the audience.”

Actor Andrew Garfield and model Lily Cole play the title characters who come upon a Marc Jacobs clad witch, played by the always dramatic Lady Gaga (and, once again, she doesn’t disappoint). But not all the drama transpired in front of the camera, in the video Coddington describes Gaga’s provocative arrival to the set, “in order for us to have a clean palate to work with, she turned up completely naked under a white rubber rain coat.”

Also featured in the video is cover star, Cate Blanchett, leader of the Palast Orchester, Max Raabe, and saxophonist James Mooney.
