In the age of social media, Facebook and Twitter, it is more important than ever for women to have a professional headshot of themselves to share with the online world. Celebrity hairstylist Kevin Mancuso – who has worked on countless photo shoots with the likes of Natalie Portman, Naomi Watts, America Ferrara and Cindy Crawford to name a few – can show you exactly how to capture that picture perfect hair.

On March 10th, 2010, Kevin appeared as a guest on Bravo’s hit reality hair competition Shear Genius Season 3, where he judged the work of top stylists. From years of experience on photo shoots, Kevin provided his insights on exactly what works and what doesn’t.

Prepping Hair for the Shoot:

· Try to get a trim or haircut a week or so before the shoot, so hair looks healthy.

· If you color your hair, make sure your roots are done. You should also use a color protecting shampoo and conditioner, like Nexxus Dualiste, before the shoot to maintain the color and keep hair looking vibrant.

Styling the Day of the Shoot:

· Try pulling hair in front of shoulders for close shots to help elongate your face and instantly make you look thinner.

· Avoid tightly pulled back hair since it can make you look harsh and unapproachable.

· A flattering amount of body will always make hair look healthy and natural. Try using a volumizing mousse, like Nexxus Thermal Volume, before blow-drying to protect hair from heat damage and help build bounce.

What to Wear:

· Pick clothes that are flattering to not only your body type, but also your hairstyle. Big collars are a major “don’t” with down hairstyles, and low-cut shirts should be avoided when working an updo.

Fergie rocked a bohemian style and dress at the 2008 Teen Choice Awards with a bohemian hair style to go with. Fergie’s bohemian hair style was created by Patricia Morales, Redken session stylist and hair stylist to Fergie.

It was all about having fun, clowning around, and winning some surf boards! The Teen Choice Awards, televised on August 4, was a fun-filled event with a lot of laughs and not to mention screaming fans. But like any award show, a big focus of the night was the styles seen on the red carpet. Lots of color, casual chic looks and a bevy of hairstyles were donned for the show. Always a crowd-pleaser, Fergie, graced the red-carpet with a bohemian-inspired look fitting for the award show.

“Since her dress was very bohemian, we wanted her hair to be a little edgier but still complement her look” says, Patricia Morales, Redken session stylist and hair stylist to Fergie. “I showed her a series of braids I have been working on and she chose the fish tail braids. I think she rocked it!”

This is how to create Fergie’s bohemian hair style at the 2008 Teen Choice Awards: Morales applied Redken full Frame 07 Protective Volumizing Mousse (SRP$15.95) and Redken Extreme Anti-Snap (SRP$14.95), to the hair when damp. This provided lots of body and volume but also smoothness and shine, which allowed an easier time to create the fish tail.

Morales then rough-dried the hair to keep Fergie’s natural texture. She started the braid by creating a low ponytail at the nape of the neck with a center part, then proceeded to create her fish tail securing with elastic then wrapping Fergie’s own hair around it. Morales pulled pieces in the front to shape Fergie’s face and kept the braid to the side and over her shoulder. Morales finished off with Redken workforce 09 flexible volumizing spray (SRP $14.95), for hold and added shine

With her flaming fuchsia and red halter style long dress, colorful bracelets, and an edgy belt, Fergie rocked the red carpet. She owned her hippie-inspired style and the fish tail braid complemented her overall look. Fergie looked fun, flirty, and youthful — a perfect style for the highly energized and fun-filled show.
