You started your career as a fashion model, like your sister Jodi, what prompted your switch to makeup artist? I sort of fell into modeling and never really took to it. I would get so nervous before I had to go down the run way my lip would start trembling. I started spending more and more time backstage, I loved the vibe and the atmosphere. I tried my hand at styling for a while but it still wasn’t right, just not creative enough. Then I took a course in make up, absolutely loved it and never looked back.

What defines the Jemma Kidd Makeup School makeup line? The line has evolved from the school, and its all about education. I have found that so many women wear make up but so few know how to apply it. I wanted to make buying make up less scary, and user friendly. All the products come with a how to guide so people can recreate the look for themselves at home.

Your makeup line is not loaded with too many products, why do you insist on such simplicity? I have focused on what I believe are the core essentials. So many shops you walk into and the vast amount of products blows you away, I’ve tried to make it simple to reduce the fear of it all. Each product has a story behind it and has been well thought about. For example my lipsticks are double ended. They have the colour at one end and a balm at the other. Its perfect for women on the go as it’s a great space saver and reminds you to always balm your lips before applying any colour.

What is the look this Fall/Winter at Jemma Kidd Makeup School? Inspired by the midnight sky, precious gems and the spectrum of the blue tones on the catwalk, the collection paints a dramatic canvas of shimmering metallics, brilliant blues and stunning silvers.

In 2003, the Jemma Kidd Makeup School opened in London’s Covent Garden. What is the school’s mission? The Jemma Kidd Make Up School was founded in 2003 to develop a new breed of make-up professional to the highest possible standards, and launch their career in the industry. Driven by my passion for make-up artistry, and a desire to share my knowledge and enthusiasm for the industry, our vision for the School is ambitious and progressive. We offer an unrivalled range of short introductory courses and master classes, in addition to the School’s intensive, academically structured six week professional course
– already established in London as the professional college of choice. Above all – our mission is to inspire our students to achieve their maximum creative and technical potential, be they aspiring make up professionals, or enthusiastic amateurs.”

What advice can you give to teenagers who are just discovering makeup for the first time? I think it’s important to remember less is more. Only apply foundation to problem areas and blend. Products such as my lip and cheek stain are great for that natural flushed look.
