A Tribute To Shu Uemura
June 19th marks the date that Mr. Shu Uemura would have turned 80. The following is Talking Makeup’s tribute to the legendary Mr. Shu Uemura. It is a brief biography describing Mr. Uemura’s beginnings and journey to becoming one of the world’s most brilliant makeup artists.
Mr. Shu Uemura Biography (1928-2007).
Shu Uemura is above all else, a pioneer. As one of the first Asian make-up artists to gain fame in the West, he sought out to do something that nobody else had tried.

Born in 1928, his childhood dream of becoming an actor was crushed in his late teens by the onset of a severe illness that left him with a weakened constitution. Recognizing that this would rule him out of future acting roles, he searched for a vocation that would be less physically demanding, but allow for equally creative expression. Always fascinated by conceptions of beauty, the young Shu Uemura resolved to become a make-up artist, and enrolled at Tokyo Beauty Academy – the only man in a class of 130.
His big break came in 1955 when a make-up artist from the set of Joe Butterfly, a Hollywood production being filmed in post-war Tokyo, came to the beauty school in search of a male assistant; Shu Uemura’s career as a make-up artist had begun.
shu uemura HANA-BI Collection
Happy 25th Anniversary. The ultimate gift. Mr. shu uemura opened the first Beauty Boutique in Tokyo’s upscale Omotesando district in June of 1983. Each year a limited edition collection of the season’s most “festive” beauty items are created as a cherished memento of the special day.
In June 2008, shu uemura introduces the limited-edition collection named HANA-BI, meaning fireworks, to celebrate the season full of energy, excitement and festivals. The HANA-BI collection is inspired by three fundamental elements of nature: terre (earth), rose (flower), and source (water). The collection includes a series of 100% natural origin fragrances formulated with Depsea water and unique color palettes that captures the essence of each fragrance.
Looking deeper into the essence of HANA-BI, the word also contains HANA, meaning flower, and BI, representing beauty. Fireworks are beautiful flowers of fire expressing the core of shu uemura’s vision for this anniversary collection. As vibrant and energetic as each woman, the diverse colors and dynamic shapes of fireworks are captured in this 2008 summer collection.
The art featured on the products in the limited edition HANA-BI collection was created through a collaboration with Gweneal Nicolas, a multi-talented Tokyo-based architect, space, package and graphic designer. The spontaneous burst of color on the packaging , unique on each bottle, represents his interpretation of a firework, to celebrate this momentous occasion.
The shu uemura HANA-BI Collection includes: Limited Edition palette fleur de terre: energizing, luminous colors inspired by nature, full of energy. SRP: $65.

How Gina Brooke Created Madonna’s Eye Candy Look
Madonna’s new look “Eye Candy” created for her new album “HARD CANDY” was designed by shu uemura’s Artistic Director and Madonna makeup artist Gina Brooke.
“It’s all about the eyes and we are both inspired by images taken in the sixties by photographer Sam Haskins (Cowboy Kate, Five Girls, and November Girls). I wanted to put a modern-day twist on these beautiful photographs of glamorous women from the sixties,” commented Brooke on Madonna’s new look that appears in the packaging on her new “HARD CANDY” CD, the current Elle Magazine featuring Madonna, as well as in Madonna’s “4 Minutes to Save the World” video with Justin Timberlake.
Here’s how Gina designed the look using shu uemura products:
STEP 1: Prepare the face. Begin with prepping the eyes with the Moisture Eye Zone Mask. This will not only calm puffiness but it will give your eyes the ultimate hydration . Then apply Phyto Black Lift Firming Cream on the whole face-it’s an amazing moisturizer and also reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Lastly, apply Face Architect Smoothing Fluid Foundation beginning at the arch of your brow down to the middle of your eye, directly onto to the middle of of the cheekbone. Each time the sun reflects of your skin, it will create an illusion of glowing, dewy, healthy, radiant skin!
STEP 2: Prime the eyelids. Using a Kolisky Brush II, apply Pressed Eye Shadow in M Beige 800 above the eyelids. Then, use Cover Crayon in 9YR Lightin the inner corner and water line of the eyes and make them apear larger. Using the Drawing Pencil in Black, begin at the inner corners extending the line out all the way to the end of the eyebrow.
STEP 3: Prep the lashes. Use the Eyelash Curler before applying Basic Black Mascara beginning at the base and rolling the brush through the tips of lashes. Apply Soft Cross Lashes to draw attention and enhance the shape of the eye.
STEP 4: Finish off with the lips. Since the focus is on the eyes, use Rouge Unlimited Crystal Shine in PK 301S layered with Gloss Unlimited in BG 930N for a soft, natural look.

Tips by Makeup Artist Jason Hoffman
Here are some makeup tips by Jason Hoffman, principle makeup artist for shu uemura on how to apply the new shu uemura Rouge Unlimited Crystal Shine lipstick:
1. For a light glossy stain, apply directly from the tube.
2. If you want slightly heavier shine, use a brush to apply. The brush will pick up more product and blend it evenly on the lips.
3. For more color depth and long lasting wear, pair the Crystal Shine with a pencil. Try to use a pencil that is similar in color and remember to fill in the lips, avoiding the the outline left alone when the shine wears off.

4. As with all shu uemura lipsticks, Crystal Shine is great for eyes and cheeks. Use synthetic foundation brush and apply on the apples. (The colors look very fresh and the shimmer offers a beautiful sheen). For the eyes, use a synthetic concealer brush. Beiges and browns will be the easiest to wear on the eyes, and reds and oranges can often make you look tired.

Ror spring 2008 shu uemura introduces the new Mini Eye Lash Curler that is small enough to control individual segments of the eyelash. Used by itself or together with a full-sized eyelash curler, it enables flaring, volumizing, or for catching hard to reach lashes.
Gina Brooke, celebrity makeup artist and Artistic Director for shu uemura USA, states that “Curling your lashes has never been more convenient. The petite design of the shu uemura mini eyelash curler allows you to curl your lashes in precise sections-with no pinching or pulling. The result is a naturally defined eye-opening curl. The mini eyelash curler works best when applying the curler to the base of the lash and gently squeezing the mini lever for up to 3 seconds at the time until lashes are curled.” Available: February 2008.
