An Interview with Makeup Artist Mélanie Inglessis (@melaniemakep) on creating her beauty look for Ruth Negga:

What steps did you take to prep for the look, and what inspired you?

Ruth’s face is so unique and ethereal; her skin is flawless. My goal was to focus on gorgeous, breathable skin and a soft, purple-plum smoky eye to complement the rose gold in her dress.

Eyes, lips or cheeks: which of her features did you want to emphasize the most?

Actually, this look is all about the skin! I layered two foundations for great, glowing, healthy-looking coverage. I started by brushing on CHANEL Sublimage Le Teint Cream Foundation in 50 from the middle of the face outward, polishing into the skin. I layered with CHANEL Perfection Lumiere Velvet Smooth-Effect Makeup Broad Spectrum SPF 15 in 70 for breathable coverage. I applied all four shades of CHANEL Exclusive Creation Coco Code Blush Harmony at once for a subtle, sun-kissed look. Then, I added more of the rosy shade to flush the apples of her cheeks and dusted the gold shimmer on her cheekbones as a highlight.

How did you create her smoky eye?

We went for a top-heavy smoky look, meaning no color on the bottom. All over her lid, up to the crease, I applied CHANEL Illusion D’Ombre Long Wear Luminous Eyeshadow in New Moon. I drew a thick, winged line near the lashline, then smudged with a brush. I created more depth on the outer corners and in the eye crease with CHANEL Quadra Eyeshadow in Tissé Cambon, a really dark burgundy shadow. I added a pop of a rose gold on the inner corner, then a couple of coats of CHANEL Le Volume de CHANEL in Noir on top lashes and CHANEL Inimitable Intense Mascara in Rouge Noir on bottom.

What about her lip look?

I wanted a nude lip, with just a little pop in the middle. I applied CHANEL Crayon de Couleur in Nude all over the lips, then dabbed CHANEL Rouge Allure Ink Matte Liquid Lip Colour in Luxuriant in the middle and had her blot.

What’s the secret to keeping her look photo-ready from red carpet to after party?

Well hydrated, glowing skin that’s not over-moisturized. Before makeup, I prepped Ruth with CHANEL Le Lift Flash Eye Revitalizer, CHANEL Hydra Beauty Micro Serum and CHANEL Hydra Beauty Nourishing Lip Care.

An Interview with Makeup Artist Kara Yoshimoto Bua (@karayoshimotobua) on creating her beauty look for Jessica Biel:

What inspired you for Jessica’s look tonight?

She wore an incredible, black velvet gown with graphic lines and lots of texture, so I wanted to mimic that feel – with a look that’s modern yet romantic. I gave her a graphic cat eye, balanced with a soft, nude lip.

How did you prep her look?

It might sound indulgent, but I prepped her entire body with CHANEL La Solution 10 de Chanel Sensitive Skin Cream so her skin would really glow.
Tell us about the cat eye. I drew CHANEL Écriture de Chanel Eyeliner Pen Effortless Definition in Noir along the lashline and extended it out past the ends of her eyes. After setting down the lines, I applied a good coat of on the top lashes, and CHANEL Le Volume de Chanel in Brun on the bottom to keep things softer, not drag the eye down. After mascara, I brushed on the light pink and golden peach shadows from CHANEL Limited Edition Quadra Eyeshadow in Codes Subtils across the lid, and filled in her brows with a combination of CHANEL Crayon Sourcils Sculpting Eyebrow Pencil in Blond Clair and CHANEL La Palette Sourcils de Chanel Brow Powder Duo in 40 Naturel.

And for the rest of her makeup?

I highlighted and contoured Jessica’s complexion with two shades of CHANEL Éclat Lumière Highlighter Face Pen. I wanted her great skin to shine through. I applied a deep tone of CHANEL Les Beiges Healthy Glow Sheer Colour SPF 15 under her cheekbones and temples, and used the highlighting shade on her orbital bone. I finished with CHANEL Powder Blush in Élégance, a warm, peachy tone, for some soft shimmer. For Jessica’s lips, I didn’t want her to have a lot of upkeep; she’s a very natural person. So I didn’t do any liner, just an easy application of CHANEL Crayon de Couleur Jumbo Longwear Lip Crayon in Nude.

Any special technique that was important to her look tonight?

Jessica is really down-to-earth, and she likes her makeup to still “be her.” So even when creating a cat eye, we didn’t want to go too glam. Just simple with a pop.

What’s one secret to keeping her look photo-ready from red carpet to after party?

The lip crayon! It’s really simple to use, not a lot of maintenance. If you wanted to play around with the crayon at home, you can use it as a stain (by blotting it on your lips) or even take a little and swirl it on the apples of your cheeks.

How can you create a great cat eye at home?

Start out practicing with long-lasting eyeliner pencil; it’s easier to play around with. You can use concealer to clean up your line and sharpen any edges.

What steps did you take to prep for the look, and what inspired you?

We decided to do a modern take on Old Hollywood glamour, with a soft lip and beautiful, smoky eyes. But the look all started by prepping Naomie’s skin using CHANEL Blue Serum to create a healthy, even base.

Eyes, lips or cheeks: which of her features did you want to emphasize the most?

Her eyes: we play up her eyes more all the time. I started with the lighter shades from CHANEL Limited Edition Quadra Eyeshadow in Codes Subtils, applying them along the browbone and inner corners. Then, I smoked out her eyes with the deeper shades. I lined the lids and the inner rims with CHANEL Stylo Yeux Waterproof Long Lasting Eyeliner in Noir Petrole and finished with two coats of mascara on the top and bottom lashes.

After eyes, how did you create the rest of her look?

I used a foundation brush to apply CHANEL Le Teint Ultra Tenue Ultrawear Flawless Foundation to perfect the complexion, then dusted the hairline and hollows of the cheeks with CHANEL Les Beiges Healthy Glow Sheer Colour SPF 15 in 70 for warmth and definition. For a pop of color, I applied CHANEL Exclusive Creation Coco Codes Blush Harmony on the apples of the cheeks and blended out onto the cheekbones. I finished with a soft pink lip, made by blending two shades of the new CHANEL Crayon de Colour Jumbo Longwear Lip Crayon in Nude and CHANEL Crayon de Colour Jumbo Longwear Lip Crayon in Rose Clair.

What’s the secret to keeping her look photo-ready from red carpet to after party?

I set her skin with a little loose powder, and I sent her off with a powder puff.

Any other products you sent with her?

Both shades of CHANEL Crayon de Colour Jumbo Longwear Lip Crayon. When I blended the shades, I just applied Rose Clair around her lips, and Nude in the center. It’s so easy.

What element of this look do you feel is the easiest to create for every day?

You can get a quick version of a smoky eye by rimming the top and bottom lashlines with black pencil, then using a brush to smoke it out. Apply a darker shadow on the outside of your upper lid, and a lighter shade on the inner corners.

Who did you work with tonight?

Sienna Miller. She and I have known each other since the ’90s, and there’s a shorthand between us. I just love her to bits.

What steps did you take to prep for the look, and what inspired you?

Her dress felt a little bit ’60s, but we didn’t want to go full-on Bardot. We wanted that really nonchalant French look, which is perfect for Sienna.
For the first time ever, I broke my skincare prep steps – and I used a different serum, CHANEL Blue Serum. It has a really great texture. And since I knew the lips were going to be a major part of the look, I really hydrated Sienna’s lips with CHANEL Hydra Beauty Nourishing Lip Care.

Can you tell us more about the lip?

To create fullness, I applied a little CHANEL Limied Edition Plissé Lumière de Chanel Highlighting Powder just on the crest of her upper lip. Then, I swiped on CHANEL Crayon de Couleur Jumbo Longwear Lip Crayon in Nude. She wanted a nude lip, and that had enough pigment yet was simple to maintain.

What’s the secret to a great nude lip?

It needs a certain amount of peach to look sensuous. This was the perfect, peachy-pink color.

How did you create her eye look?

I spent time working on her eyebrows with CHANEL Crayon Sourcils Sculpting Eyebrow Pencil in Blond Clair, making them a little thicker than usual. Then I applied the light pale shade from CHANEL Exclusive Creation Coco Code Blush Harmony to her lid, and added the taupe shadow from the palette to the socket line. I drew a sharp, thin line along the base of the lashes with CHANEL Calligraphie de Chanel Longwear Intense Cream Eyeliner to add to our Bardot-esque, Jane Birkin idea. I curled the lashes, then finished with one coat of CHANEL Inimitable Waterproof Mascara in Noir, my go-to for red-carpet work.

How did you create the rest of her look?

After primer, I applied CHANEL Perfection Lumiere Velvet Smooth-Effect Makeup Broad Spectrum SPF 15 because I wanted her look to stay matte without needing too much makeup. I used CHANEL Le Teint Ultra Tenue Ultrawear Flawless Compact Foundation Broad Spectrum SPF 15 on the middle of her forehead and chin, the sides of her nose and along her jawline. It diffuses light like nothing else: It’s magic powder!

What did you send her off with for touch-ups throughout the night?

The lip crayon and blotting papers.

Was there a unique application method/technique that you used specifically for tonight’s look?

What was your inspiration for Keri’s look?

Keri was wearing a bohemian-inspired dress, and I went for a soft, earthy look to complement that. She’s so comfortable in her skin, so I wanted to create a look that let her face shine through.

What steps did you take to prep her skin?

Tonight, I prepped with CHANEL Blue Serum on her face, CHANEL Hydra Beauty Micro Gel Yeux on her eyes and CHANEL Rouge Coco Baume Hydrating Conditioning Lip Balm on her lips.

Eyes, lips or cheeks — which of Keri’s features did you play up the most?

Definitely her eyes. To start, I used a sheer layer of CHANEL Correcteur Perfection on the lids. I applied CHANEL Le Crayon Yeux Precision Eye Definer in Noir along the upper lashline and all around the waterline. I applied CHANEL Illusion D’Ombre Long Wear Luminous Eyeshadow in New Moon all across the lid and under the eyes, then I pulled a bit of the two liners into the outer edges to create an almond shape. Next, I dabbed CHANEL Illusion D’Ombre Long Wear Luminous Eyeshadow in Émerveillé to the inner corners to add a little shine. Finally, I coated her lashes in tons of CHANEL Inimitable Waterproof Mascara in Noir. I call this look a ‘Gypsy Eye.’

And for her eyebrows?

I wanted Keri’s eyebrows to be really feathery and wispy, so I brushed them up and filled them in using CHANEL Crayon Sourcils Sculpting Eyebrow Pencil in Blond Clair. I kept them on the lighter side to keep the focus on the strong eye look.

Now that the smoky eye is complete, how did you finish the rest of her face?

I didn’t want to use bronzey shades that would compete with the intense eye, so I went for a pop of crisp pink on her cheeks. I used CHANEL Powder Blush in Hyperfresh, a cotton-candy colour. For lips, I applied a mix to give it a bit more dimension: A layer of CHANEL Crayon de Couleur Jumbo Longwear Lip Crayon in Nude followed by a slightly darker shade of CHANEL Rouge Allure Intense Long Wear Lip Color in Libre.

Was there a unique tip that you used specifically for tonight’s look?

On the eyes, I used my finger to tap the shadow on top of the pencil eyeliner to help ‘grab’ the shadow and add wear time to the look. Doing this also helps to create a unique lighting effect, where the shimmer bounces off the dark liner.

And did you send her off with anything for touch-ups?

The CHANEL Powder Blush in Hyperfresh, CHANEL Rouge Coco Baume Hydrating Conditioning Lip Balm and CHANEL Crayon de Couleur Jumbo Longwear Lip Crayon in Nude.

What inspired Jessica’s look tonight?

Jessica’s dress was a periwinkle blue, and when you have a lot of color, you need to balance that out with a more neutral palette. I also had this ’60s photo in my mind — Twiggy, lots of lashes, white eyeshadow — so that was my focus, and not matching the blue but finding the perfect complement and palette. Let’s say late ’60s meets 2017.

What steps did you take to prep for the look?

CHANEL Blue Serum has the perfect texture for prepping makeup, so you can use less foundation and not worry about emphasizing dry patches. I applied CHANEL Le Teint Ultra Tenue Ultrawear Flawless Foundation using both my fingers and CHANEL Pinceau Fond de Teint Foundation Brush. I didn’t use powder just yet, in case I needed to reapply in areas where the foundation has absorbed. It’s all about not looking cakey. Just on her way out, when everything has settled, I swept the CHANEL Poudre Universelle Compacte Natural Finish Pressed Powder all over.

Eyes, lips or cheeks — which of her features did you want to emphasize the most?

The makeup was pretty balanced all over, but I chose to start with her eyes.

I went for that ’60s-inspired, doe-eyed look. I covered Jessica’s lids in the white shade of CHANEL Quadra Eyeshadow in Tissé Smokey to create an even, neutral base, then I applied the silvery shade very lightly onto the crease. I used the black shadow wet, and painted the color exactly into the lashline with a skinny eyeliner brush. Really tight and really precise. On the bottom lashline, I smudged the darker grey shade, focusing on the center for a rounder eye versus a cat-eye shape. To finish, I curled her lashes and applied three coats of CHANEL Le Volume de Chanel in Noir to get that super-intense look. I used a tiny fan brush to paint the mascara onto the bottom lashes.

Now that the eye is done, how did you choose to do the rest of her face?

Jessica has a lot of natural color to her lips, so I prepped them with a sheer layer of CHANEL Le Teint Ultra Tenue Ultrawear Flawless Foundation to help the lipstick shade to stay genuine. I then filled in with CHANEL Crayon de Couleur Jumbo Lip Crayon in Rose Clair . As for her cheeks, I dusted CHANEL Powder Blush in In Love — a subtle, sweet pink— onto just the apples and pulled the color out toward the ears and above the cheekbones. Absolutely no contouring.

And did you send her off with anything to touch-up throughout the night?

The pressed powder and, of course, the lip crayon. It’s easy to reapply and you can touch-up anywhere, even in the car.

What element of this look do you feel is the easiest to create for every day?

I think people are wimpy with their mascara, and to me, if you’re even just a little brave, you can really go for it. Want a cat eye? Add an extra coat to the outer corner of your lashes. A doe eye? Apply the extra coat to the center. The key is to use your mascara to work the shape of your eye. With a few coats, you can get a whole lot of looks.

Who did you work with tonight?

Emily Ratajkowski. I saw a picture of her dress the day before, and I wanted to do something interesting with color, but in a wearable and refined way.

How did you prep her look?

As always, one of the most important steps in makeup is skincare. On clean skin, I prepped with CHANEL Lotion Confort all over the face and neck with cotton pads. I then applied a generous amount of the new CHANEL Blue Serum, followed by CHANEL Hydra Beauty Crème, CHANEL Le Lift Crème Yeux and CHANEL Hydra Beauty Nourishing Lip Care.

What was the focus of Emily’s look? Eyes, lips, cheeks?

I wanted to focus on the eyes, with warm colors hinting at the dress without literally being gold. I used CHANEL Stylo Yeux Waterproof Long Lasting Eyeliner in Mat Taupe to sketch along Emily’s lashline and waterline, and extend slightly toward the end. I slightly smudged that, then drew along the outer corner, and blended onto the lid and lightly into the crease. By creating a soft base color, eyeshadow will look more multidimensional when applied on top. I applied a wash of CHANEL Illusion D’Ombre Long Wear Luminous Eyeshadow in Convoitise to the eyelids and inner corner, then layered the gold shades from the CHANEL Quadra Eyeshadow in Codes Élégants and a bit of the coppery shade from the CHANEL Limited Edition Quadra Eyeshadow in Codes Subtils palette. I finished with several coats of CHANEL Le Volume de Chanel in Noir for thick, lush lashes.

How did you create the rest of her look?

I applied a sheer layer of CHANEL Le Teint Ultra Tenue Ultrawear Flawless Foundation in 70. The foundation is longwearing and perfect for a day like this! To add brightness, I applied CHANEL Éclat Lumière Highlighter Face Pen, blending into the foundation under the eyes and through the center of the face. For added warmth, I used CHANEL Soleil de Chanel Bronzing Makeup Base along the cheekbones, temples and bridge of the nose. I applied a warm blush, CHANEL Powder Blush in Élégance, and then dusted CHANEL Infiniment Chanel Highlighting Powder on top of the cheekbones. To keep Emily’s lips along the same lines as the rest of the makeup, I traced CHANEL Le Crayon Lèvres Precision Lip Definer in Natural just inside her natural lipline. I used a brush to blend a couple sheer layers of CHANEL Rouge Coco Ultra Hydrating Lip Colour in Sari Doré onto her lips.

Any extra steps before Emily headed out?

Once the makeup was complete, I added a little extra boost of radiance with CHANEL Hydra Beauty Essence Mist. Lastly, I went back and applied a tiny amount of loose powder to the center of the face. This made sure she’d still be glowing, but shine-free where she needed to be for the red carpet.

What’s the key to making her eye look stay all night?

I prepped her lids with eyeshadow primer, CHANEL Professional Eye Shadow Base in Beige.

What element of this look do you feel is the easiest to create for every day?

The great thing about this look is that it’s fairly straightforward, and not too complicated for those who want to try it at home. The lipstick is a nice option for anyone on the go because it adds just enough color to wake up the face without being as big of a commitment as something like red.

What steps did you take to prep for the look, and what inspired you?

Her dress was CHANEL Couture, and to me it felt very 1920s. I wanted to play off that Old Hollywood, classic look with a red lip. I looked at all the Chanel reds, but CHANEL Crayon de Couleur Jumbo Longwear Lip Crayon in Carmin instinctually felt right.

I started this evening with CHANEL Sublimage La Crème Yeux and CHANEL Blue Serum, and a little facial massage. Makeup sits so nicely over those products.

For Riley’s lips, we wanted that ultra-precise look. I started with a lip pencil with a waxier texture, CHANEL Precision Lip Definer in Rouge Profond. I applied CHANEL Crayon de Couleur Jumbo Longwear Lip Crayon in Carmin straight onto the lips, then blended it all with CHANEL Angled Lip Brush so the color was really even and perfectly lined up at the edges.

Now that the lips are done, how did you choose to do the rest of her face and why?

To perfect her complexion, I applied a combination of two CHANEL Le Teint Ultra Tenue Ultrawear Flawless Foundation, a darker shade around the perimeter and a lighter shade on the inner face to highlight. I applied La Palette Sourcils de CHANEL Brow Powder Duo in 40 Naturel to make her brows really full and natural, then brushed them upward to keep them extra-thick.

For Riley’s eye look, I applied the new CHANEL Limited Edition Quadra Eyeshadow in Codes Subtils, mostly just the warm, mid-tone brown to contrast with her beautiful blue eyes. I used a soft brush to apply the shadow all the way around the eyes, top and bottom. I defined her lashline with a matte, taupe eyeliner pencil, CHANEL Stylo Yeux Long Lasting Waterproof Eyeliner in Mat Taupe, then applied more shadow on top to set it. I curled her lashes and then finished with CHANEL Inimitable Mascara in Noir on the top and bottom lashes.

Was there a unique application method or technique that you used specifically for tonight’s look?

After foundation, I gave Riley a glow with CHANEL Soleil Tan de Chanel Bronzing Makeup Base on a big fluffy brush. I applied it the same way I’d use a powder, for some extra radiance. It’s especially good to warm up paler complexions in a natural way. Then I dusted on a little CHANEL Exclusive Creation Coco Codes Blush Harmony.

I always send my girls out with a pressed powder and their lip shade. Keep it simple.

This eye look was super-simple, too. You really don’t need a ton of shades to create a beautiful, softly sculpted eye. It’s all about soft application with an eye brush and gentle blending.

What was your inspiration for the look?

We wanted to create a layered, smoky effect for the red carpet.

What color did you choose and why?
I used CHANEL Le Vernis Longwear Nail Color in Organdi on her hands, with the new CHANEL Limited Edition Le Top Coat in Black Métamorphosis. What was your inspiration for the look?

We wanted to create a nude nail, but with some life.

What color did you choose and why?

What was your inspiration?

I wanted to create a fresh, classic look.

What was the first step you took to get her red-carpet ready?

Then, what was your next step?

Before beginning her manicure, I applied a bit of lavender oil to her wrist. Then, I filed her nails to a natural shape reflective of her cuticle.

Did you do anything special or out of the ordinary to her nails tonight?

How can women at home easily recreate this look?
File your nails to the shape that best suits your hand (do this by following the shape of your cuticle), make sure all oils and residue are removed from your nails before applying polish, and use two to three coats of color. This helps the polish to dry faster and look more even.
