Marta Walsh: When did your fascination for style begin?
Steven Lake: It began early. When I was a kid my mom worked as a Mary Kay director. I would carry her bags and go with her to women’s houses. I watched as she educated women on how to wear makeup to enhance their beauty and give them confidence. I also remember being in high school and the girls would show up in the fall with new hair do’s. Some completely reinvented themselves. I remember thinking “wow” how cool!

Marta Walsh Interviews Pierce Mattie Founder of Pierce Mattie PR
Pierce Mattie is the CEO of Pierce Mattie PR with offices in New York, Los Angeles and in Atlanta.
In this interview Pierce Mattie talks to Marta Walsh about how he got into the world of Public Relations, his most successful PR campaigns he created for Old Navy, Ojon Hair Care, and ReVive Skin Care. How he came up with the Media Oasis concept. His business plans for the future, and even shares some of his personal plans like his engagement to marry his fiancé Skie Ocasio in March 2009. And, you don’t want to miss Pierce Mattie’ s ultimate dinner party because it includes an intriguing mix of personalities, such as: Warren Buffet, Liz Smith, and Hillary Clinton.
How did you end up in the world of Public Relations?
I moved to Manhattan in 1998 to work as a cosmetics manager at Bergdorf Goodman and was doing facials and offering styling tips for beauty and fashion editors. Amy Bratt was working at Mirabella Magazine and ran a feature on me offering tips on doing at-home-peels and wrinkle busting tactics. That was the day my life went into the spotlight you could say. I then moved onto working for a wholesale manufacture of lifestyle products for resorts and hotels and climbed my way to the role of Global Public Relations Director and ran the PR for over a dozen countries. I then took a break in my career to write a beauty text book and it was during that sabbatical that Pierce Mattie the PR firm was conceived.
Marta Walsh Interviews Chaz Dean
Celebrity hair stylist Chaz Dean is the creator of Wen Hair Care Line or Wen by Chaz Dean.
Chaz Dean and Marta Walsh.
In this interview Chaz Dean talks to Marta Walsh about how through his appreciation for beauty and his mission to help every women to realize their best beauty potential he created Wen hair care line, why he stopped using shampoos and how he managed to convince his celebrity clients to do the same, how he went about creating the very popular Wen Cleansing Conditioner, the launch of Wen products for the skin and Wen hair mask which in the past was exclusive to their salon clients and celebrities, and his love for cooking.
When did your interest in hair design begin?
My interest in hair design stems from an appreciation for beauty that I’ve had all my life. I started my career in photography because initially I wanted to capture that – but eventually I realized I wanted to be more involved in creating beauty and not just reflecting it on an image. I wanted to shape a look in its different aspects and in the process realized how hair is so fundamental to that.

Marta Walsh Interviews Sara Strand of Pop Beauty
Meet Sara Strand the founder of Pop Beauty makeup line. In this interview Sara Strand talks to Marta Walsh about what drove her to create Pop Beauty, Eyecakes- the first product she conceptualized and developed as part of Pop Beauty, how Pop Beauty is perfect for anybody who is ready to experiment and move a little bit out of their comfort zone, her talent for singing, and her very exciting move to sunny California.
How was the idea for Pop Beauty makeup line born?
As a makeup artist and a woman – pop where the pieces that were missing in my makeup bag. Pop represents everything that I love about life, zest, energy, playfulness, and originality. Also there really was a gap in the market for fun colorful makeup of great quality! I also wanted fabulous products that would really stand out on stage.
How does the name Pop Beauty reflect its makeup collections?
The name says it all! A pop of color, to make your eyes pop. Pop culture, pop art. Just like the collections the name sums up what I love about makeup with an added edge and a touch of femininity!
What was the first makeup product you have conceptualized and created for Pop Beauty?
The eyecakes was the first product formulated for the first collection. The shades harmonize and are put together specifically to make green, blue and brown eyes pop. It’s a makeup artist’s advice in a cute retro tin! And the colors look amazing on!
