Backstage at Tory Burch Fashion Show

New York Fashion Week Fall 2009: I was supposed to cover backstage at Tory Burch fashion show during New York Fashion week last week, and for some reason I arrived when the show actually began. I have lots of great show coverage but missed the backstage hair & makeup look. Thanks to Daily Makeover Editors Rachel Hayes and Megan McIntyre, I have the scoop for you!

Tory Burch Goes For Bedroom Beauty: “This is a very sexy, gorgeous look,” says makeup artist Diane Kendal for MAC.  She used a combination of black and gold shadows to create a sultry, smoky eye. “We didn’t use any mascara which gives it an edgier look,” she says. A hint of gold shimmer was also in the soft pink blush. “Gold is definitely a popular metallic accent for this season.” Lips were neutral and glossy thanks to MAC Cremesheen Glass in Boy Bai, a light, pearly beige.

NARS Backstage Trend Report: Phillip Lim

NARS Cosmetics was backstage creating the makeup look for Phillip Lim’s Autumn/Winter 2009 show.

SHOW: Phillip Lim. LEAD ARTIST: Ayako, International Makeup Director, NARS Cosmetics. TREND: Wispy lashes, translucent matte skin.

Inspiration: The Fall 2009 collection took inspiration from the mythical spirit of rock and roll, while the hair and makeup was created to emulate Tao Okamoto’s look, a Japanese model in Phillip Lim’s Fall 2009 collection. Fused together, Phillip wanted the makeup look to mirror Tao’s mod style with a touch of rock n’ roll. With this in mind, Ayako created a look centered around “poetic mod-rock.”

Look: False lashes were placed on the outer half of the bottom lash line and was the central focus of the look. For an exaggerated effect, matte charcoal shadow was used with a wet eyeliner brush to draw lashes beneath, as if to create a shadow effect. “This is the poetic part of the look,” said Ayako. As a complement to the wispy lashes, shimmering pink and gold shadows covered the lids, while the lips were muted with concealer. Skin was made flawless with the newly formulated sheer matte foundation (NEW for Fall 2009) to counteract the sleepy look of the lengthy bottom lashes. Atop the matte skin, a gentle sweep of shimmer was added to cheekbones to catch the light.

Below is a step-by-step to recreate the look:

90210’s Jessica Stroup Gets Front Row Flawless with theBalm

Despite the bitter cold of a typical New York winter, Jessica Stroup heated up New York Fashion Week, with smoldering makeup courtesy of theBalm Makeup Artist, Felicia Roman. Wanting all attention on Stroup’s bright blue eyes, Felicia went dramatic with the lids and kept the rest simple.

How to create Felicia Stroup’s makeup look?

1- Pick-Up-Liners in Don Juan were smudged around the lashes and in a thicker line covering most of the bottom part of the lid to achieve smoky definition. Because the Pick Up Liners are half the size of a typical pencil, Felicia was able to get up close and really push the liner into the base of the lashes with perfect precision.

Christian Siriano Fashion Show: Get the Victoria Secret Makeup Look

Key Makeup Artist Polly Osmond for  Created a Cleopatra-esqe Look for Christian Siriano’s Fall 2009 Runway Show.

According to Osmond, “The look was based on a modern take of an Egyptian feel. We used heavy golds and blacks. The eyes were lined underneath with VS Makeup Eyeliner in Black Velvet with a more square shape rather than cat like. On the top of eyelids we used a gold shadow (VS Makeup Silky Eyeshadow in Champagne). We highlighted the face using the champagne shadow and lightly contoured with the VS Makeup Goddess Bronzer. On the darker skins, we used the bronzer as the highlighter. Mascara was then applied to top lashes only. Lips were a heavy gold. (For a more wearable shade, try VS Makeup Brilliant Lip Shine in Charm).”
