New York Fashion Week Spring 2010 Makeup Trends: Marc Jacobs

Show: Marc Jacobs Spring 2010
Lead Artist: François Nars, Founder and Creative Director of NARS Cosmetics
Trend: Theatrical Makeup

Inspiration: The look of the Marc Jacobs collection was inspired by the contemporary dancer, Martha Graham: Old-fashioned and theatrical but graceful and precise. At the same time, however, there was a darker side that was shone through: a quality of gothic romance. Ballerinas with a sense of mystery- as if part of them, along with some of their makeup, had been left behind on stage.

Look: Left-over stage makeup. The models weren’t meant to have perfect makeup- rather, they were meant to encompass a “just came off-stage” effect. “Dancers in theater and opera always have white faces, pointed lips and an eye that is drawn outward, not upward-it’s very theatrical, very ballet,” said François Nars. He stressed the importance of the eye for this look, noting that “the shape of the eyeliner is important- it should open the eyes, especially underneath. The slashes of white is something they used to do in the 70s- it brings a 3-dimensional feeling to the makeup.”

New York Fashion Spring 2010 Trend Report: Maria Grachvogel

The Show: Maria Grachvogel
Lead Artist: James Boehmer, NARS Cosmetics International Lead Makeup Artist
Trend: Bold Red Matte Lips and Strong Brows

Inspiration: Maria Grachvogel used iconic references of Princess Margaret as photographed by Lord Snowden and Tippi Hedren in “Marnie” to convey the mood of her collection in a modern way- polished yet glamorous.

Look: The look is polished and strong- inspired by a glamorous and modern twist of Hitchcock’s femme fatale. “This look is not about the glowing skin underneath- it’s about the makeup- the brows need to be long and sketchy and the lips need to be rounded and bee-stung,” said lead artist James Boehmer. A flat, matte lip paired with a strong brow was balanced by a bare eye. “The lip,” James warns, “has to be really rich and vibrant- the focus is getting that rich lip otherwise the look can appear as if something is lacking.”

New York Fashion Week Spring 2010 Trend Report: Marchesa

NARS Cosmetics created the makeup look at the Marchesa SS2010 show.

Lead Artist: Talia Shobrook for NARS Cosmetics
Trend: Long Feathered Lashes
Inspiration:
The inspiration behind the collection came from Madame Butterfly. “I wanted to capture the real look of Japan, create layers and bits of origami,” said designer Georgina Chapman. The whimsical creations based in sculpted layers balanced the soft, bare faces that were accentuated with long lashes.

Look: Very simple, romantic and beautiful skin contoured with varying formulas. “We contoured the skin with matte and shimmery textures and added feathers to the eyes to provide dimension to the face,” explained lead artist Talia Shobrook. A matte face was illuminated with a bit of shimmer. Feather lashes, custom created by NARS from the feathers on the Marchesa dresses, gave excitement to an otherwise simple look.

Foundation is one of my favorite thing about makeup! I’m all about getting that flawless skin whether naturally with great skin care, or faking it with the perfect foundation. What is the best way to identify the right foundation for your skin tone?
Natural light! Make sure you are in natural light when choosing a foundation shade. And, it should match perfectly with the base of your neck.

What is the biggest mistake women make when wearing foundation?
Wearing too much foundation or the wrong shade – either too dark or too light. Finding the right shade and right foundation texture is crucial. The skin’s natural highlights should be shining through.

How often/what time of year should a woman have her foundation shade matched?
As often as needed; every time the skin tone changes. You should have several shades of foundation in your makeup wardrobe.

Taylor Momsen Wears NARS at Marchesa and Anna Sui

Taylor Momsen was spotted at Marchesa and Anna Sui’s A/W 2009 shows wearing NARS Cosmetics.

Taylor Momsen portrays the character Jenny Humphrey on The CW television series Gossip Girl.

“Taylor wanted a smoky, strong eye – her signature look,” said NARS Makeup Artist Sharon Brown. “I used Black Moon Eyeliner Pencil to rim her eyes and smudge over the entire lid.”

…Blue shadow was layered for a pop of color. Finally, Cyprus, a bronze shadow with shimmer, was added for a flawless transition into her next outfit.

“She was wearing a beautiful dress with copper accents later that night so I wanted the look to work well into the evening.” With the eyes as the focus, the cheeks were kept soft and highlighted, and the lips were delicately glossed with a new sheer pink grapefruit shade for spring.

NARS Backstage Trend Report: Thakoon

New Fashion Week Fall 2009 recap by NARS Cosmetics: NARS Cosmetics was backstage creating the makeup look at Thakoon.  NARS Lead Makeup Artist: Diane Kendal.

TREND: Smoky eyes. Inspiration: The collection took inspiration from the 1940’s, reflecting the surrealist images of photographer Lee Miller. Combined with a bit of 80’s rock and roll glam, makeup artist Diane Kendal created a strong look without being too girly.

Look: “The look is all about the eyes with soft matte lips for contrast,” said Diane Kendal. To bring strength to the face, Diane focused on creating smoky eyes and full brows, while downplaying the lips and keeping skin fresh with a light brushing of blush for a healthy glow.
